MLB Mariners vs Angels Odds and Prediction for Thursday’s Game

The Los Angeles Angels not only didn’t deal superstar Shohei Ohtani ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline, they added a bunch of pieces around him. Ohtani takes the mound on Thursday as a home favorite on the MLB odds as the Halos open a series against AL West rival Seattle.

Why Bet on Seattle?

The Angels lead the season series 4-2 after taking two of three games in each of the first two meetings this year (April 3-5 at T-Mobile Park and June 9-11 at Angel Stadium).

Young Mariners flame-thrower Matt Brash is in line to see more eighth-inning opportunities as part of the domino effect of Paul Sewald’s trade to the Diamondbacks on Monday, and he could also be a candidate for some save chances. Brash was great in July with a 2-0 record, eight holds and a 13.9 K/9 without giving up a home run across 11 innings over 12 appearances. Brash has been more successful as a reliever since transitioning to the bullpen and at worse should pitch more in the eighth inning behind projected primary closer Andres Munoz.

The big name Seattle got in the Sewald trade is 25-year-old outfielder Dominic Canzone from Arizona. He has been playing daily since for the M’s. The 25-year-old posted impressive offensive numbers throughout the Diamondbacks’ minor-league system and could potentially carve out a regular role with Seattle as Jarred Kelenic recovers from a fractured foot.

Another promising young Seattle outfielder, Cade Marlowe, didn’t start Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox. Marlowe went 2-for-4 with a run scored Tuesday versus Boston and boasts a .960 OPS through his first 30 major-league plate appearances. Since making his MLB debut on July 20, Marlowe is averaging 4.73 pitches-per-plate appearance, tied for 5th-most in MLB during that span (min. 20 PA).

It’s rookie right-hander Bryan Woo (1-3, 4.96 ERA) on the mound Thursday. Woo pitched five innings against Arizona last Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out zero batters in a no-decision. Woo came into the contest with 54 punchouts over 44 big-league frames, so it was surprising to see him go five innings without recording a single strikeout. Woo got just five swings and misses on 73 pitches in the game, registering a horrifying CSW of only 14 percent. Woo might be running into the rookie wall and the Mariners could decide to shut him down soon.

Woo’s lone start vs. the Angels was on June 10 in Anaheim. He struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits in a no-decision. His only major mistake came in the third inning, when Ohtani connected on an inside slider for a two-run homer to right field.

Why Bet on LA Angels?

Los Angeles completed a long road trip Wednesday with a second straight loss, 12-5 in Atlanta, but it was a good trip overall for the Angels as they are in the thick of the wild-card race. Outfielder Mickey Moniak didn’t start Wednesday with a sore foot. Jordyn Adams was recently recalled from the minors to provide extra outfield depth and Adams started Wednesday. He was 0-for-4 with two Ks.

Good-looking rookie catcher Logan O’Hoppe, out since April with a torn labrum in his shoulder, will go on a rehab assignment next week. The Angels will likely have O’Hoppe max out the 20 days he can spend on a rehab assignment, so he probably won’t be back until the final week of August or maybe Sept. 1.

A day after the Angels acquired reliever Dominic Leone in a trade with the Mets, he was added to the 26-man roster on Wednesday. Leone, 31, has a 4.40 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings this season. He pitched better in July, posting a 2.25 ERA in eight innings, as he saw his velocity increase.

One of the Angels’ trade additions, C.J. Cron, has hit safely in each of his last 12 games after a knock in Wednesday’s loss. It’s the longest active hit streak in the majors and is tied for the longest of his career. Cron also had a 12-game hit streak for the Angels from Aug. 24-Sept. 5, 2016. With shortstop Zach Neto in the starting lineup, the Angels have a 36-26 record, including a 14-5 record in his last 19 starts. He didn’t play Wednesday.

It’s Shohei Ohtani on the mound Thursday. As a hitter, Ohtani leads the Majors in home runs (39), total bases (269), XBH (63), slugging percentage (.676) and OPS (1.082) and is tied for the MLB lead in triples (7). Ohtani is one home run shy from recording his second career 40+ HR season (he hit 46 HR in 2021). He would become the third player in Angels history with multiple 40+ HR seasons, joining Troy Glaus (2000 & 2001) and Mike Trout (2015, 2019 & 2022).

On the mound, Ohtani is 9-5 with a 3.43 ERA, leads the Majors in opponent batting average (.185), is tied for fourth in strikeouts (156) and is ninth in WHIP (1.07). In eight career games vs. the Mariners, he is 5-0 with a 2.02 ERA (49 IP – 11 ER) and 62 strikeouts. This season, he has gone 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA (11 IP – 4 ER) in two games against Seattle.
