Memphis Grizzlies Analysis

The Grizzlies won a wild 127-125 game at Minnesota on Saturday as Ja Morant hit the tiebreaking jumper with 18 seconds left. Minnesota had the ball with the game tied at 125 and under a minute to play but Julius Randle turned the ball over. It was the 19th turnover of the game by the Wolves. Anthony Edwards missed two 3-pointers in the final 7.3 seconds of a game in which neither team led by more than six and featured 25 lead changes.

“We know he’s built for those moments,” Jenkins said of Morant. “… You got the utmost faith in that kid to take over a game at the end.”

Ja Morant

Morant finished with just 12 points but Jaren Jackson blew up with 33 points along with eight rebounds. He’s scored at least 20 points in each of his last six outings while surpassing the 30-point mark three times in that span. Jackson leads the Grizzlies in scoring, steals and blocks, one of three NBA players to lead his team in all three categories (Anthony Davis, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander). Jackson is also Top 10 in the NBA in fourth-quarter total points.

Desmond Bane

Bane added 21 points, five rebounds and five assists and has scored at least 20 in five of his past six. Not only did the Grizzlies snap a six-game losing streak in Minnesota dating back to 2021, they also entered Saturday with a .500 record against the Western Conference.

Injuries

Jenkins said before Saturday’s game that he’s hoping to have both GG Jackson and Vince Williams back before the end of the month from injuries. Jackson hasn’t played this season as he recovers from foot surgery, while Williams has been out with a sprained right ankle since mid-November. Rookie guard Cam Spencer fractured his right thumb last week and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

Marcus Smart

Guard Smart is making strong progress from a right index finger injury and will be listed as week-to-week. Since being traded to Memphis in 2023, the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year has played in a total of 38 games over the last two seasons. Smart is averaging a career-low 21.2 minutes per game. Memphis is 11-7 when Smart has been available this season.

Zyon Pullin

Because the team is a bit shorthanded, over the weekend it signed Pullin to a two-way contract. Pullin, a 6-foot-4 guard, averaged 24.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.7 assists in six regular season games for the NBA G-League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce.

The Grizzlies have survived this season with only five players who have played at least 30 of their games thus far. Their depth has been a major strength. They have 10 players who average at least 21 minutes per game and an 11th player, Brandon Clarke, who averages 18.6 minutes.

Houston Rockets Analysis

Houston has not taken the court since its 119-115 win at Memphis on Jan. 9 because the team’s game in Atlanta on Saturday was postponed to weather. The makeup date is TBA. Alperen Sengun dominated in that Memphis win with 32 points, 14 rebounds and five assists – although he was only 7-for-15 from the foul line. It was his second 30-point double-double of the season and his 24th double-double overall. Houston is 6-1 this season when Segun scores at least 26 points.

Jalen Green

Green had 27 points against the Grizzlies and over the past two weeks is shooting 43.8% from the field and averaging 24.4 points per game. Green has scored 25+ points in 4 straight games for the first time since a career-best 8-game span in March of last season. He’s averaging 21.3 ppg (44.5% FGs) in wins compared to 18.6 (36.7% FGs) in losses overall.

Fred VanVleet

VanVleet had 22 points, four assists and four steals. He has scored 20+ points in 3 of the past 9 games after not having more than 13 points in any of his previous 6 games played; the Rockets are 7-1 when he scores 20+ points this season. Two Rockets have scored 20+ points in the same game 21 times this season, including 3 players 5 times.

Injuries

Forwards Tari Eason and Jabari Smith were out injured. Eason is day-to-day but Smith is out at least a few more weeks. With those two hurt, Jae’Sean Tate is getting more minutes. Over the first 27 games of Houston’s season, Tate played in only 11 games, and most of those appearances came in mop-up duty. Only one went longer than nine minutes. But he had a season-high 12 points against Memphis and is averaging 16.0 minutes played over his past nine after 5.5 in his first 11. Tate is 5-for-9 from deep over his past five games after shooting 1-of-7 in his first 15.

Jae’Sean Tate

Tate also enables the team to keep a strong defensive lineup on the court at all times. “It’s definitely always fun to play, but at the end of the day, we want to win as many games as we can,” he said. “We are dealing with a couple injuries right now, and we just have to have that next man up (mentality) until we get our guys back. So until that happens, I’m ready, and we’ll see what happens.”

The Stats

The Rockets are 25-5 when leading by 10+ points this season and have 13 wins by 10+ points, including 7 by 20+. Houston is outscoring opponents by an average of 6.0 ppg overall. The Rockets are 5-9 when trailing by double-digits and lost by 10+ points 3 times, including by 20+ once. Houston is 23-3 when leading at the start of the fourth quarter this season and 2-9 when trailing. The Rockets are 7-5 in games decided by 5 or fewer points this season, including 3-3 by 3 or fewer. Houston is 2-5 in games in which it was both outshot and outrebounded this season.

It has lost 3 of its past 5 home games after winning 10 of their previous 11 (13-6 overall).

Grizzlies vs Rockets Season Series

Houston leads 2-0. They played last Thursday in Memphis and the Rockets were 119-115 winners. Alperen Sengun had 32 points and 14 rebounds, Jalen Green had 27 points and Fred VanVleet 22 points. With 3.8 seconds left in the game and Houston leading 117-114, Desmond Bane fired up a 3-pointer that rattled in. But Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins called timeout before the shot was made. Bane was fouled on the ensuing inbounds, and Memphis wouldn’t get another chance for a winning shot. Ja Morant led the way with 27 points. The Rockets are looking to win consecutive season series for the first time since 2018-19 and 2019-20. They have won three straight at home in the series after losing the previous three at Toyota Center.

2020 Grizzlies vs Rockets

The Memphis Grizzlies are trying to hang on to the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, but they will have to do it the next couple of weeks at least without excellent young big man Jaren Jackson Jr. The Grizz will be underdogs on the Mybookie NBA odds for Wednesday’s trip to Houston. Let’s see how the NBA odds will be for the Grizzlies vs Rockets.

Grizzlies vs Rockets Season Series

Teams have split two games, both in Memphis. They last played Jan. 14 and the Grizzlies won 121-110. The game was tied at 95 with 7:54 remaining before Memphis pulled away for good with a 11-1 run; Ja Morant had 11 of his team-high 26 points in the quarter and he shot 10-of-11 for the game. The Grizzlies outshot the Rockets 51.1% to 43.0% and Memphis had 25 fast break points. Since losing five straight from 11/11/17-1/14/19, Grizzlies have won two of the past three in the series. Memphis is looking to win two straight for first time since 10/23/17 and 10/28/17. The Grizzlies haven’t won a season series vs. Houston since going 3-1 in 2012-13.

Why Bet on Memphis?

The Grizzlies lost their third in a row, all on the road, 124-97 at the Clippers on Monday. Kawhi Leonard scored 25 points in three quarters and Montrezl Harrell had 22 points for Los Angeles, which led throughout and was up by 35 early in the second quarter. It was the third time this season and second against Memphis that Los Angeles put up 40 or more points in the opening 12 minutes. The Clippers were buoyed by the return of Paul George and Patrick Beverley from injuries.

The 14 points by Memphis were the fewest Los Angeles has allowed in a first quarter this season. The Grizzlies missed nine of their first 10 shots and 16 of 21 in the period while committing eight turnovers.

Ja Morant shot 7-of-13 from the field and 2-of-2 from the foul line in Monday’s loss, finishing with 16 points and one assist in 27 minutes. Morant may have shot better than 50% from the field, but the Clippers managed to shut him down as a playmaker. It was the first time in the rookie’s young career in which he failed to dish out at least two assists, and he also missed all three of his three-point attempts.

Gorgui Dieng played 28 minutes off the bench Monday with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Memphis was without Jaren Jackson Jr. (knee), and Brandon Clarke left the game after just four minutes due to a sore right hip.

Jackson was hurt last Friday vs. the Lakers and will miss at least a few weeks. He ranks second on the Grizzlies with 16.9 points per game and leads the team with 1.6 blocks per game. Jackson, the fourth overall pick in the 2018 draft, is shooting 39.7% from 3-point range. Clarke started for him Monday but had to leave early.

Why Bet on Houston?

The Houston Rockets won a fourth in a row Monday, 123-112 over the Knicks. James Harden, Russell Westbrook and P.J. Tucker arrived at the arena about 70 minutes before tip-off after attending the memorial service for Kobe Bryant earlier in the day in Los Angeles.

Harden shot 14-of-25 from the field and 5-of-9 from the foul line for 37 points along with nine assists and six rebounds. He had 31 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field in the first half. Harden has shot 50.0% or better from the floor in consecutive games for the first time since a career-high seven-game span from 12/19-1/3. He is averaging 8.4 assists in February after averaging 6.5 apg in January. Houston is 27.6 when he scores at least 34 points this season.

Robert Covington had 11 points and seven rebounds. Covington has scored in double figures in five of the seven games that he’s played in since being acquired from the Timberwolves in early February.

Westbrook was expected to play against the Knicks, but was scratched with a sore thumb. Eric Gordon started in place of Westbrook and had 16 points in his second game back after missing three games with a bruised left leg. But he left early in the fourth quarter with a sore knee.

Mike D’Antoni said Gordon is questionable for Wednesday’s game vs. Memphis, but expects he will play. Westbrook also should play. Over his last 16 appearances, Westbrook is averaging 33.2 points per game while shooting over 53% from the floor. Westbrook ranks third in the NBA in scoring over that span (games back to 1/9).

Houston has won six of its past seven home games after losing three straight prior. The Rockets are 20-8 at home this season.
