Miami Heat Analysis

The Heat remain without All-Star guard Jimmy Butler, who has been traded but is currently serving a seven-game suspension for “conduct detrimental to the team” about how he went about his trade demands. Basically, Butler had been loafing in games of late. In theory, the earliest that Butler could play again for the Heat is Jan. 17 at home against Denver. But he has likely played for Miami for the final time. Butler is averaging 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists this year.

Jimmy Butler

With Butler able to become a free agent this upcoming summer because of a $52.4 million player option in his contract for next season, teams exploring a trade for him likely want to know that he would commit to them past the remainder of this season.

The Heat looked very distracted by all this on a three-game losing streak, but then they shocked the Warriors 114-98 in San Francisco on Tuesday night even though the Heat had played the night before in Sacramento and gone to double overtime.

Nikola Jović

Jović provided a boost off the bench with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists against the Warriors as Coach Erik Spoelstra used a more balanced rotation on the second night of a back-to-back, which allowed Jovic to take on a larger role. He took advantage of the opportunity and had one of his best performances of the season. He set a new season-high for scoring and scored in double figures for the third straight game. Jovic is one of the players that has benefitted from Butler being out of the lineup.

Erik Spoelstra

“These are opportunities, when you have a real tough game last night and a quick turnaround, you can rally around each other, or you can get overwhelmed and feel sorry for yourselves,” Spoelstra said. “We have a group that has great competitive character. And we’re working to get things right and get to a different level.”

Tyler Herro

Herro was questionable with a knee injury but played through it and had 14 points on 4-for-14 shooting, tied for his lowest-scoring output of the year. With a second-quarter 3-pointer, Herro extended his career best streak of games with at least one 3-pointer to 69, tying Duncan Robinson’s franchise record, a record set in 2021. Herro has scored in double figures in 65 consecutive games dating back to last season, his longest overall streak when including both the regular season and postseason.

Bam Adebayo

Miami needs more from Adebayo. He is shooting just 65.5 percent at the rim this season, which is his lowest shooting percentage from within the restricted area since his rookie season. As a result, Adebayo is shooting 50.2 percent from inside the paint this season, after shooting 57.3 percent from inside the paint last regular season.

The Heat have held opponents to under 100 points nine times this season, all wins. In addition, Miami is 9-0 when out rebounding their opponents.

Utah Jazz Analysis

As the Jazz‘s youth movement begins to find traction, Utah has started winning occasional games, 4-6 in the past 10 after starting the season 5-20. The Jazz are defending much better and sharing the ball.

Utah on Tuesday was trying for its first three-game winning streak of the season but lost 124-121 at home to Atlanta on a Trae Young 50-footer at the buzzer. Young took an inbounds pass, dribbled to just short of half court and hit the shot as time expired while being loosely guarded by Collin Sexton, who had seemingly forced overtime with a tying 3-pointer with four seconds remaining. Utah has won just twice in 15 home games.

Will Hardy

“That’s a tough way for the game to end, but there’s nothing to be upset about with the end of the game,” Coach Hardy said. “I thought Collin was pressuring the ball pretty well, but those are some of the breaks of the game… Trae Young made a half court shot. It’s one that we’ll watch film, and there’ll be things to teach like there always is, but this is one you just kind of shake their hand and move on. It was a hell of a finish and an incredible shot.”

The Defense

The Jazz defense had been successful in limiting shot attempts around the rim coming into Tuesday’s game, but the Hawks were able to successfully counter Utah’s defensive schemes and adjustments, as Atlanta had a 50-38 edge in points in the paint. The Jazz struggled inside the arc Tuesday night, connecting on just 43.8 percent of their two-point attempts.

Lauri Markkanen

Markkanen was in question for Utah after missing a game with back spasms but led the Jazz with 35 points and eight 3-pointers. It was just his third 30-point performance of the season and his first since November. He set a new season high for both points and 3-pointers. Markkanen did most of his work before halftime, as he entered the break with 24 of his 35 points.

Walker Kessler

Kessler had a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double that included eight offensive boards. Kessler is having a career season and is emerging as one of the best and most impactful defenders in the league. He’s second in the NBA with 2.6 blocked shots per game and eight of 11 rebounds per game. When the 7-footer is on the floor, the Jazz is difficult to score on consistently because he’s a deterring presence in the lane. Since entering the league in 2022-23, Kessler has totaled 401 blocks in just 167 games played. Those blocks are second-most in the NBA in that span.

Injuries

With the likes of Keyonte George, John Collins and Jordan Clarkson out injured, rookie Isaiah Collier got another start on Tuesday and contributed three points, six rebounds and nine assists. It was the fourth start of his career with George sidelined. Collier sits in the top three for assists per game among the 2024-2025 rookie class, averaging 3.6 apg.

Patty Mills

Mills provided a boost off the bench with 13 points. Mills was part of Utah’s rotation to start the season, but he fell out of the rotation in the middle of November. He was needed Tuesday with all those guys out. In his 16th NBA season, Mills ranks third in NBA history in made 3-pointers off the bench.

Heat vs Jazz Season Series

These teams just met last Saturday in Miami, and the Jazz played may be their best game of the year in a 136-100 upset. Brice Sensabaugh scored a career-high 34 points, and John Collins finished with 24. The Jazz outscored Miami 40-19 in the second quarter for a 62-41 lead at halftime. George’s 3-pointer early in the fourth gave the Jazz their biggest lead at 112-69. It was the sixth-largest home loss in Heat history and worst since a 144-97 loss to Milwaukee on Dec. 29, 2020. Utah leads all-time 54-26.
