As of this writing, Denver sits fourth in the Western Conference but could get as high as third and also slip all the way into the Play-In Tournament. They are favorites on the NBA daily line tonight, so keep reading to see how this matchup stand out today between Nuggets vs. Kings.

To participate in the Play-In, Denver is +140, while to make the full-field playoffs the Nuggets are -4000 with No at +1500. The Nuggets close with games vs. Memphis and Houston, and I expect them to finish in the West’s top four and get home-field advantage in the first round.

Sacramento sits ninth in the West, can’t get any higher but could slip to 10th. But the Kings won’t miss the Play-In and will face Dallas in that first game.

The winner of that 9-10 matchup – and it could be either in Sacramento or Dallas – would then face the loser of the 7-8 game for the No. 8 and final spot in the West playoffs. To make the full-field playoffs, the Kings are +300 with no at -400.

In the Sacramento era, the Nuggets lead the regular-season series 80-74 but are 26-52 on the road.

The now-fired Malone was also the head coach of the Kings for parts of two seasons from 2013-14.

Nuggets’ First Game Since Firing Malone

Jamal Murray missed his fifth straight game due to injury. Jalen Pickett started for him Sunday and had just four points.

Malone, though, was fired on Tuesday in a stunner. Assistant David Adelman will serve as the team’s interim coach for the remainder of the season. Malone led the Nuggets to an NBA championship two seasons ago and was 471-327 in 10 seasons.

Josh Kroenke

“This decision was not made lightly and was evaluated very carefully, and we do it only with the intention of giving our group the best chance at competing for the 2025 NBA Championship and delivering another title to Denver and our fans everywhere,” Josh Kroenke, the vice chairman of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, said in a statement about firing Malone and GM Calvin Booth.

Kings Start Final Homestand

The Kings begin a three-game homestand to end the regular season, riding a three-game winning streak after a 127-117 upset in Detroit.

Trailing by 21, they took the lead at 97-94 with a last-second 3-pointer from Zach LaVine.

LaVine had a season-high 43 points, and his eight three-pointers matched his previous high. LaVine has scored 25 or more in three straight games, the first time he’s done so since joining the Kings in February via trade from Chicago.

LaVine’s former Bulls teammate DeMar DeRozan added 27 points. DeRozan and LaVine each tallied over 30 points for the ninth time as teammates.

Unfortunately, guard Malik Monk exited early due to a calf injury. Markelle Fultz and Devin Carter would see more minutes, with Monk likely out at least Wednesday.

Nuggets at Kings Expert Prediction

This is the first time since the current playoff format was introduced in 1983/84 that the Nos. 4–8 seeds in a conference are within a half-game of each other in the standings 78-plus games into a season – which affects Denver.

It’s also just the second time teams ranked 3-8 in a conference are within two games of each other 78-plus games into a season, with the other also coming in the West in the 2017-18 season.

A few weeks ago, it seemed like the Nuggets would be a lock to clinch a top-six seed and a guaranteed playoff spot in the West.

Denver was without starting forward Aaron Gordon. Nuggets 122, Kings 119.
