Phoenix Suns Analysis

Phoenix lost its fourth straight game and seventh in the past eight on Saturday, 115-108 at Indiana. The Pacers swung the game by breaking a 56-all halftime tie with the first five points of the second half and used a pivotal 40-point third quarter — their third-best quarter all season — to seize control. Indiana never trailed in the second half. The Pacers had 35 assists on 46 baskets and only six turnovers while outrebounding the Suns 47-37.

Kevin Durant

Durant had 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the loss after a strong December in which he averaged 28.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He committed five against the Pacers, with the Suns finishing with 12 overall. Phoenix was without point guard Tyus Jones (illness), which placed more playmaking responsibilities on the plates of the Suns’ stars.

Devin Booker

Booker had 20 points, nine assists and nine rebounds, barely shy of what would’ve marked his first triple-double of the season and second of his career. Booker was 7-for-15 from the field after a brutal 4-for-20 effort in his first game back last Tuesday. With Jones missing the game, Ryan Dunn got his 13th start of the year and had 13 points and four boards. Dunn likely will start again Monday if Jones isn’t better.

Bradley Beal

After missing most of Tuesday’s loss to Memphis, Beal was ineffective vs. Indiana, recording just eight points (on 3-of-12 shooting), three assists and three rebounds in 33 minutes. The team was outscored by 21 points when he was on the court. Grayson Allen notched 13 points, four rebounds and six assists in 31 minutes off the bench following a five-game absence.

“S—, the vibes are low, man,” said Booker after the loss. “We’re just have to keep fighting. It’s a blessing to even be in this position, but our output is super ugly right now. We continue to build. Hopefully later in the season, these moments right here are out the way, got past them, but right now, we’re in the thick of it.”

Center Jusuf Nurkic will return from a three-game suspension on Monday for his role in a fight against Dallas late last month. He’s averaging 8.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Three-point shot Stats

One issue of Phoenix’s struggles of late has been 3-point shooting as in the team’s past eight games, it ranks 28th in 3-point attempts per game with 33.4 and didn’t reach 40 in any contest. The attempts were at 30 on Saturday that included a first half in which Phoenix took a whopping 56% of its shots from the midrange. The Suns are on pace for the lowest shot volume around the basket in over 15 years.

Philadelphia 76ers Analysis

The Sixers are starting to play to expectations as they get healthier. They easily won in Brooklyn on Saturday, 123-94, as the Nets were playing without starters Cam Thomas (left ankle), Cam Johnson (right ankle) and Ben Simmons (left calf). Philadelphia fell behind 11-0 with 10:20 remaining in the opening period before blitzing the Nets with a 29-8 run to close out the quarter.

The 76ers kept the rhythm going in the second quarter, shooting 57% to take a 64-47 lead heading into the break and the game was never in doubt. Philly recorded a season-high 31 assists on 42 made field goals, representing the team’s highest assist game since April 7, 2024, at San Antonio (31).

Joel Embiid

Embiid had 28 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in just 29 minutes for a fourth double-double in his past 10 games. It was Embiid’s fifth consecutive 25-point outing and eighth overall this season (the team is 6-2 in those). These five straight 25-point games are tied for the third-longest active streak in the NBA.

Over these five games, Embiid is averaging 30.4 points (5th in NBA), on 50.0-percent shooting from the field, 56.3-percent from three-point range, and 89.5-percent from the foul line. He’s also averaging 9.8 rebounds along with 1.0 steals and blocked shots per game since Dec. 25. Saturday’s 10-of-10 performance from the foul line marked Embiid’s fourth consecutive game with at least 10 makes, setting the league’s season-best streak.

Paul George

George had 17 points, six assists and four boards in just four minutes and believes the team is finally finding its footing: “The injuries just haven’t been on our side, but I think we’re gelling, we’re starting to enjoy each other out on the floor. The stuff off the court is starting to trickle on the court, and that’s a great sign.”

Caleb Martin

Martin had 17 points, all in the first half and between the first two quarters he shot a perfect 7-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point range. He became the fifth 76er to shoot 7-of-7 or better in a half since 2020. Rookie Justin Edwards posted career highs in points (11), field goals (4), three-pointers (3), and rebounds (5) in the victory.

Nick Nurse

“I think we need that wing presence first and foremost, just defensively and on the glass,” Sixers head coach Nurse said after the game about Edwards. “It was really good to see him. He seems to get shots. I don’t know how long that will last, but I think it’s just because he’s kind of in the right place and the ball finds him a little bit. Obviously, making them — that’s huge if he’s going to do that. But again, just that presence defensively and on the glass is kind of what we need.”

Kelly Oubre Jr.

Forward Oubre Jr. missed a third straight game Saturday with a sprained left hand and remains day-to-day. He’s averaging 12.8 points and 5.7 points this season. Oubre also has played for the Suns in his career.

First Meeting

On Nov. 4, the Suns beat the visiting Sixers 118-116. It was the Sixers debut of Paul George, who had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes. Tyrese Maxey had 32 for Philly, which was without former MVP Joel Embiid. Kevin Durant led the Suns with 35 points and broke a tie on a driving layup with 24 seconds left. Jusuf Nurkic had 15 points and 15 rebounds. The Suns have won nine of the last 11 over the 76ers, including six straight wins in Phoenix. The two losses over the 11-game stretch were the last two meetings in Philadelphia.

2021 Phoenix Suns vs Philadelphia 76ers

The Phoenix Suns played in a potential NBA Finals preview on Monday in Milwaukee and won in a thriller. They play in another potential Finals preview on Wednesday at Philadelphia. The NBA odds will depend on the health status of a couple of key 76ers.

Last Meeting

On Feb. 13, the Suns beat the visiting Sixers 120-111. Devin Booker scored 36 points, and Chris Paul added 18 points and 10 assists. The game was tied 53-all at halftime. Booker took control in the third quarter, when he scored 16 points to give Phoenix an 86-81 lead going into the fourth. Dario Saric and Jae Crowder each hit 3-pointers to open the fourth quarter and extend the Suns’ lead to 92-81 and that was that. Joel Embiid had 35 points on 12-of-23 shooting for the Sixers.

Why Bet on Phoenix? | 2021 NBA Expert Analysis

The Suns won a wild 128-127 OT game in Milwaukee on Monday. Devin Booker missed a shot as time expired in OT and it looked as if the game would go to second OT, but officials determined P.J. Tucker fouled Booker before time expired and put 0.3 seconds on the clock. Booker made the first of two free throws amid a chorus of boos from the Milwaukee crowd. This writer watched that game and it was a terrible, terrible call.

Bookier finished with 24 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. Booker paced the team with a 28 percent usage rate and 24 shots from the field. However, he struggled to convert for the fourth consecutive game, as he’s shot just 31.2 percent in that span.

Former No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton had 20 points and 13 rebounds. He reached 40 minutes for only the second time this season and managed 20 points for the fifth time in his last 17 contests. Ayton is averaging 18.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks while shooting 73.6 percent from the field and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line in his last five games.

Chris Paul had 22 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds. Paul’s 13 assists pushed him past Magic Johnson for No. 5 on the NBA’s all-time list. Paul called the moment “surreal” passing an icon like Johnson on the list, saying his plan is to send the ball to Johnson for the Hall of Famer to sign it. Paul now currently sits at 10,145 assists for his career and trails Mark Jackson (10,334) by 189 assists for fourth on the all-time list.

Consider a Booker prop for this game as Booker has scored 30+ points in 7 straight against Philadelphia, averaging 37.6 points on 51.8 FG% with 3.7 3FG per game on 49.1 3FG%. Booker’s 7-game streak scoring 30+ is the longest streak by a Sun against any opponent.

Suns coach Monty Williams was an assistant coach for the Sixers in 2018-19. Williams was coached by Sixers coach Doc Rivers with Orlando from 1999-2002; Williams and Rivers were also briefly teammates, both with New York in 1994-95 and with San Antonio in 1995-96.

Why Bet on Philadelphia? | 2021 NBA Expert Analysis

The Sixers played without their second- and third-best players Monday in Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris and not shockingly were upset at home by red-hot Steph Curry and Golden State, 107-96. In a game that featured seven lead changes and 15 ties, the Sixers and Warriors each led by as many as 12.

MVP candidate Joel Embiid could only do so much by himself as he had 28 points 13, rebounds and eight assists. While Embiid’s 30-point streak came to an end at three games, his double-double streak was extended to three. He is the only player in the NBA to attempt, and make, double-digit free throws per game and is among the top three in free throw percentage among centers. Embiid’s eight assists were the most he’s had in a game since he handed out nine Feb. 17.

Seth Curry returned from a hip injury on Monday had 15 points and five assists. George Hill made his Sixers debut on Monday and hit 1-of-5 shots for two points, two rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 18 minutes. He hadn’t played since January 24 with Oklahoma City due to thumb surgery.

Matisse Thybulle tied his season-high 13 points – leading the bench in scoring – and tied his season-high seven rebounds, plus three steals and a block. He shot 6-for-11 from the field in 31 minutes.

Harris missed his second game in a row with a minor knee injury and Simmons was out with a non-COVID illness. Consider them questionable here, although Simmons is probably more likely to play. Furkan Korkmaz and Mike Scott started in their places. The Sixers shot 39.3% from the field and 37.5% from deep.
