Bills vs Patriots NFL Week 16 Lines, Preview & Pick

Written by on December 19, 2018

Preseason predictions very seldom go the way we thought they would, as there are always favorites who fall flat and underdogs who rise, seemingly against all odds. That said, there are a few teams that always seem to be in the mix every single year, regardless of how everything plays out. It’s very difficult to be consistently good and consistently relevant for a long time, especially in the salary cap era in the NFL. Teams are very often forced to dump salaries and draft well in order to stay on top, which is something that the New England Patriots have done exceptionally well.

That said, it certainly helps to have the coach/QB combo that they have. As we head to the end of another season, the Patriots are once again assured of a playoff spot, but they are not exactly looking like the powerhouse team we have become accustomed to over the past decade or so. They are on a poor run of form at the moment, but they should be able to snap out of that as a 13-point favorite at home to the Buffalo Bills this weekend. The point total for this one is set at 44 ½.

Why bet on the Buffalo Bills?

The Buffalo Bills were one of those surprise teams last season, unexpectedly sneaking their way into the playoffs via the back door before taking an early exit. There will be no such magic this season, though, as the Bills have long since been eliminated from playoff contention. Rather than simply throwing in the towel, though, the Bills are battling all the way to the end, winning 3 of their last 5 games at a time when they could easily have tanked to get a better draft pick.

Their feistiness has not really translated into them being a particularly good ATS bet, though, as they have covered just 4 times in the last 10 games. All told, they are 5-7 ATS as the underdog, which includes being 3-4 as the road dog. 4 of their last 6 games have gone over, but on the road, the Bills are 2-5 O/U this season.

Why bet on the New England Patriots?

If you want some idea of how consistent the Patriots have been over the years, consider the fact that you need to go all the way back to 2002 to find the last time they lost 3 games in a row. That seems like a lifetime ago, but it’s a mark that they could equal with a loss this weekend.

Bills vs Patriots should be an easy victory for New England.

They lost to the Miami Dolphins a couple of weeks ago on a final play that you might only see once or twice in a lifetime. They followed that up with a road loss to the Steelers in a game where they were a lot more outmatched than the 17-10 final score suggests. The Patriots could use a good display here to get some of their swagger back, and with a 5-1 ATS record at home, you need to like their chances.

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction for Bills vs Patriots

I don’t see any way in which the Patriots lose this one, although I also said that a couple of weeks ago when they played Miami. New England is usually money at home, so I am taking them to win and cover the spread this weekend.   Score: Buffalo Bills 17 – New England Patriots 33
