What would prove to be Aaron Rodgers’ final game as a member of the Packers was a heartbreaking 20-16 home upset loss to Detroit on Jan. 8 – had Green Bay won that game, it would have been a wild card team but the Lions’ win gave that spot to Seattle, which had won earlier on the final Sunday of the 2023 season. Rodgers was intercepted by Kerby Joseph on his final Green Bay pass, which sealed Detroit’s win. He went 17 of 27 for 205 yards with one touchdown and became the eighth NFL player to have at least 5,000 career completions. After the final seconds ticked off the clock, Rodgers walked off the field, gazing into the stands, side by side with Randall Cobb.
Both are now with the Jets. Green Bay shipped Rodgers to New York along with a 2023 first-round selection (No. 15) and a fifth-round choice (No. 170) in 2023 for a 2023 first-round selection (No. 13), a second-round pick (No. 42) and a sixth-round selection (No. 207) and a conditional second-round choice in 2024.
Rodgers, a first-round pick by the Packers (No. 24 overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft, played in 230 regular-season games (third most in team history) with 223 starts and started 21 of 22 postseason contests he played in for Green Bay. His 18 seasons playing for the Packers are the most in franchise history. With Rodgers as the starting quarterback over the past 15 seasons, Green Bay made the playoffs 11 times, won the division eight times and won a Super Bowl title. He registered a team-record 475 career passing TDs, the third most in NFL history by a QB with a single franchise.
The team now turns to Jordan Love, a 2020 first-round pick out of Utah State whose only NFL start was Week 9 of the 2021 season in Kansas City when Rodgers had COVID. The Packers lost 13-7. Love was 19 of 34 for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He has gotten into a few other games in mop-up duty. Love is eager for training camp to begin. He has taken plenty of first-team reps in the past with Rodgers missing previous OTAs. Green Bay’s first training camp practice is July 26.
“It’s kind of the external things that I can’t control that might be a little bit different being the starter now,” Love said at the end of minicamp. “But, for me, I try and keep the main thing the main thing, try and not do too much in my life where I’m pulled so many ways and can’t relax and settle down and being able to focus on what I need to focus on.”
Love will be sans a few targets as Cobb and fellow receiver Allen Lazard both left to join the Jets, whilst their most targeted tight end from last year Robert Tonyan left to join the Chicago Bears. The Pack did select Utah tight end Luke Musgrave at No 42 overall in this year’s draft and Michigan State wideout Jaylen Reed at No. 50.
After losing Tonyan in free agency and not re-signing Marcedes Lewis, they had only two tight ends with any NFL experience on their roster, Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis, and they combined for just 17 catches for 140 yards and no touchdowns. Even with Tonyan and his 53 catches last season, the Packers’ tight ends were 25th in the NFL in receiving yards. Musgrave played in only two games last season because of a knee injury, though he caught 11 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown in those contests.
The Packers never take receivers in the first round, but they’ve done well with them in the second round. Reed is the next in line following the likes of Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams and, last year, Christian Watson — all second-round receiver picks by the Packers.
Green Bay targeted defense with its first pick in Iowa pass-rusher Lukas Van Ness at No. 13 overall. Of the Packers’ last 13 first-round picks, only one — Love — has been an offensive player. Van Ness had 14 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss over the past two seasons at Iowa. Despite having the second-highest pressure rate in the NFL last season, the Packers ranked 27th in the NFL in sacks with 34.
The Packers’ strength of schedule ranks as the 24th-toughest in the NFL with an opponents’ combined winning percentage of .476 in 2022. Green Bay is a 2-point underdog Week 1 at Chicago – the Packers were almost never dogs in the NFL’s oldest rivalry when Rodgers or Favre was under center.
Green Bay is the only team in the NFL to open the season on the road each of the last five years (2019-23). It is also the fourth time in the last five years that the Packers have opened the season on the road against a division opponent. The Packers’ bye is Week 6. The team will also play on Thanksgiving in Detroit. Green Bay’s preseason opener is Aug. 11 at Cincinnati.
