What do the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans have in common? Both recently lost their most important offensive player to a season-ending injury. The Saints make their fourth all-time visit to Nashville on Sunday as short underdogs on the NFL odds.

The Titans lead the all-time series 8-6-1 but New Orleans won in Nashville two years ago, 38-28. Drew Brees threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns and Alvin Kamara ran for two TDs. After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter and experiencing some early struggles on offense, New Orleans scored touchdowns on four consecutive full possessions in the second and third quarters. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill threw two TD passes to Tajae Sharpe, the last with 7:27 left pulling them within 31-28. The Titans outgained the Saints 397-377. Star Tennessee running back Derrick Henry didn’t play.
Why Bet on New Orleans?
The Saints (5-3) were 27-25 home upset losers to the Falcons last week. Atlanta QB Matt Ryan hit Cordarrelle Patterson for a 64-yard gain with a minute left to set up Younghoe Koo’s 29-yard field goal as time expired. Atlanta had blown an 18-point, fourth-quarter deficit. New Orleans also allowed several large gains defensively in the passing game. Atlanta completed passes for gains of 64, 49, 39 and 34 yards.
Former third-string Saints QB Trevor Siemian got the start with Jameis Winston out for the season and completed 25-of-41 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns and a lost fumble.
“He graded out pretty well,” Coach Sean Payton said. “I thought the decisions came quickly, he got us in and out of a number of different plays. I thought we could have helped him more outside with some of the playmakers.
Siemian ceded surprisingly few snaps to Taysom Hill. The Saints’ all-purpose backup ended up attempting only two throws. Hill was not targeted in the passing game. Even though that Hill was returning from a lengthy absence with a concussion, it was surprisingly modest usage in the Saints’ first game without Winston.
Alvin Kamara rushed 13 times for 50 yards and a touchdown and had four receptions for 54 additional yards. Kamara’s 17 touches were his fewest since Week 2, and second fewest of the season. Kamara now has 358 career receptions, tied with Roger Craig for the most receptions by a running back in his first five seasons all-time. It’s possible Kamara could miss his game as he’s dealing with some knee pain.
Officially, the Saints are 3-1 on the road, not including their season-opening 38-3 win over Green Bay, moved to Jacksonville due to Hurricane Ida.
Why Bet on Tennessee?
The Titans were 28-16 upset winners at the Rams last Sunday night. Running back Adrian Peterson started at running back in place of star Derrick Henry, who suffered a season-ending injury in Week 8. The Titans played without starting left tackle Taylor Lewan and starting right guard Nate Davis.
Peterson scored a touchdown in his Titans debut, a clinching one-yard run with 3:00 left. He finished the game with 21 rushing yards on 10 carries on a night when the Titans ran for 69 yards and quarterback Ryan Tannehill passed for 143. He threw for a TD and a pick and added a rushing touchdown. The defense dominated as it tallied five sacks and also scored a touchdown on a Pick-Six.
The Titans (7-2) enter Week 10 with the best record in the AFC and the longest active win streak in the league (five games). Each of their past four wins have come against 2020 playoff teams, with victories over the Buffalo Bills (Week 6), Kansas City Chiefs (Week 7), Indianapolis Colts (Week 8) and Los Angeles Rams (Week 9). Each of the previous three teams to win four consecutive games with each win coming against a team that made the postseason the year before all made it to the Super Bowl that season: New England in 2011, Green Bay in 2010 and New Orleans in 2009.
With a win on Sunday, Tennessee can become the second team ever to win five consecutive games with each win coming against a team that made the playoffs the previous season, joining Philadelphia (Weeks 7-11) in 2003.
Since joining the Titans prior to the 2019 season, Tannehill has orchestrated 12 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime, most in the NFL over that span, two more than the next-closest player, Derek Carr (10). Tannehill’s 12 game-winning Titans drives are tied for the third-most by a quarterback in his first three seasons with a team since the 1970 league merger, trailing the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott (14) and the Falcons’ Matt Ryan (13).
Titans linebacker Harold Landry did not practice Wednesday due to a hamstring injury. With nine sacks in as many games, Landry is in the midst of a breakout campaign. He’s only a half of a sack away from his career-high over the course of a season.
Tennessee’s only home loss this season came at the hands of Arizona, which owns the league’s best record.
