When he became available last offseason, the Devils pounced. They are sitting third in the Metropolitan Division with 80 points and are -1800 to reach the Stanley Cup playoffs with No at +900. Most likely, New Jersey will finish third in the Metro and open at Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in Round 1.

Vancouver ended a three-year playoff drought last year as it won the Pacific Division but was ousted in the second round in seven games by bitter rival Edmonton. The Canucks were without No. 1 net minder Thatcher Demko for nearly the entire 2024 postseason due to injury, and he hasn’t played much this season, either, for the same reason and that’s why the team has taken a big step back with just 76 points and sitting fourth in the Pacific.

The Canucks trail Calgary by one point for third place, which secures a playoff spot. Currently, they’re fourth in the Wild-Card standings, three points behind the Blues. Despite a +370 odds for postseason, their goalkeeping issues may hinder their chances of qualifying for the playoffs.

Canucks Winless On Road Trip

Vancouver is on a six-game road trip, by far its longest remaining of the season, and is 0-2 on it following a 5-3 loss at the New York Rangers on Saturday. Brock Boeser tied the game at 3-3 late in the third period, but the Rangers responded quickly afterward to regain the lead. It was Boeser’s ninth career game-tying goal in the final five minutes of regulation to pass Markus Naslund and Elias Pettersson (both with 8) for the most in Canucks history. Boeser has five goals and one assist during his three-game point streak and is up to 23 goals and 44 points through 63 appearances this season.

All-Star defenseman Quinn Hughes (212 GP) assisted on Dakota Joshua’s game-opening goal and became the fourth-fastest defenseman in NHL history to record 200 career road points. The only players that required fewer games was Bobby Orr (174 GP), Paul Coffey (188 GP) and Ray Bourque (209 GP).

Physical blueliner Kiefer Sherwood a whopping 12 hits in the game and Sherwood’s 395 hits in 2024-25 are the most in a single season since the NHL started tracking the statistic officially in 2005-06. The previous mark was 383 by Boston’s Jeremy Lauzon in 2023-24.

Kevin Lankinen

No. 1 netminder Lankinen stopped just seven of 11 shots in the loss as the fifth goal was an empty-netter. Lankinen allowed three goals on six shots in a disastrous third period and has lost five of his last seven outings to drop to 24-14-8 with a 2.59 GAA and a .901 save percentage through 46 appearances this season. He might have to start again Monday out of necessity as current backup Arturs Silovs has been even worse and former No. 1 Thatcher Demko is still on IR – although it’s possible he is activated.

Devils 17-13-4 On Home Ice

New Jersey also enters on a two-game skid following a 3-2 home upset loss to Ottawa on Saturday. Nico Hischier scored a power-play goal on five shots in the loss and has four goals and three assists during his six-game point streak. Three of those tallies have come on the power play. The 26-year-old center reached the 30-goal mark Saturday, getting to that level for the second time in three years, and he’s now one goal shy of his career high from 2022-23.

Hischier joined teammate Timo Meier as the only Swiss-born players in NHL history to record multiple 30-goal seasons. Jesper Bratt (20-61—81) had an assist and set a franchise record for most assists in a season, besting the previous mark set by Scott Stevens in 1993-94 (60).

Backup Jake Allen was in net Saturday, and he allowed all three goals in a span of 4:39 during the second period. It was Allen’s first loss since Feb. 26 — he had given up a total of four goals on 103 shots over his previous three wins. He’s not likely playing Monday, though.

Following the loss, blueliner Johnathan Kovacevic said the Devils need to have a playoff-like mentality for the rest of the season, with the advantage of playing most of their games at the Prudential Center down the stretch.

Johnathan Kovacevic

“We have a pretty home-heavy schedule the rest of the rest of the way here. We got to make this place a hard place to play and a hard place to beat us,” Kovacevic explained. “I think that’s something that we want to take pride in. We’re in a fight, and hopefully that gets us in that playoff mentality 10-11, games out, and we carry that into the playoffs.”

NHL Odds: Canucks vs Devils Expert Prediction

The Canucks faced further setbacks as forwards Elias Pettersson and Nils Höglander exited Saturday’s game with undisclosed injuries, joining center Filip Chytil in the protocol. Pettersson, with 15 goals this season, was injured during a second-period faceoff; Höglander played just 7:03.

Rick Tocchet

“If you had to ask me now, it’d probably be doubtful (Pettersson and Hoglander play in New Jersey),” Vancouver coach Tocchet said. “We’re going to have to call somebody up. I think we have one recall left. We’re going to have to get a center. Saying right now, I don’t know, but it is possible that they won’t (play).”

The Devils are without All-Star center Jack Hughes and defenseman Dougie Hamilton, both out for the season due to injuries. Hughes underwent shoulder surgery, finishing with 70 points. Hamilton is sidelined with a lower body injury, along with Ondrej Palat, who has 13 goals this season.

New Jersey eyes the season sweep after a 6-0 win at Vancouver on Oct. 30. Nico Hischier had a goal and two assists, Jacob Markstrom stopped 20 shots against one of his former clubs. Markstrom’s shutout was his first with New Jersey, and he should start Monday. Dawson Mercer and Hughes each had a goal and an assist. Defending off the rush proved to be a problem for Vancouver, with four of New Jersey’s goals coming in transition. Artus Silovs was in the Canucks net. Devils 4, Canucks 2.
