Off seeing the longest home winning streak in the NHL this season end, the Colorado Avalanche try to start another one at Ball Arena when they host the Calgary Flames in a matchup with Western Conference playoff implications on Monday. The Avs are heavy favorites on the NHL odds.
Colorado sits third in the Central Division with 83 points and likely can’t get any higher or lower in it, so that would mean opening the playoffs on the road at the second-place Central team – which is currently Dallas.

That would be very intriguing considering the Stars landed former Avalanche All-Star winger Mikko Rantanen in March via trade from Carolina after the Avs had shipped him to the Hurricanes earlier this year. To win the West, Colorado is a +420 second favorite behind the Stars, and I’d probably have to lean Dallas if that’s the first-round matchup.
Calgary needs a win or at least a point much more urgently, as it sits fifth in the Pacific Division with 80 points and will not get any higher than fourth, so it’s a West wild-card spot or nothing for the Flames. They are outside that field looking in currently and seven points behind the two leaders in Minnesota and St. Louis for the spots, so it’s not looking good for Calgary. It is +430 to reach the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2022 and also first time under Coach Ryan Huska.
Even if the Flames don’t make it, this has been a pretty successful season because they found their goalie of the future in American Dustin Wolf. The team traded former No. 1 netminder Jacob Markstrom to New Jersey last summer.
^Flames On 2-Game Skid
Calgary has picked an inopportune time to go into a mini-slump as after a four-game winning streak it has dropped back-to-back games following a 3-2 OT loss in Edmonton on Saturday in the Battle of Alberta. Red-hot Flames center Nazem Kadri notched two assists and six shots on goal.
Kadri has four multipoint efforts during his six-game point streak, though Saturday was the first time he didn’t score in that span – Kadri was trying to join Elias Lindholm (eight games in 2021-22), Johnny Gaudreau (six games in 2017-18) and Jarome Iginla (twice; six games in 2011-12 & 2006-07) and Curtis Glenncross (7 GP in 2011-12) as the fifth different Flames player in the past 20 seasons with a goal streak of six or more games.
But Kadri did reach 700 points for his NHL career, only the fifth member of the 2009 NHL Draft class to reach the 700-point mark. He has seven goals and three helpers during the six-game points streak and is up to 58 points (30 goals, 28 assists) to tie Jonathan Huberdeau for the team lead in points.
No. 1 goalie Dustin Wolf, who should start Monday, stopped 26 of 29 shots in Saturday’s loss as Wolf couldn’t make a pair of one-goal leads stick. It was Wolf’s fifth loss in his last seven games (2-3-2), and he’s allowed at least three goals in each outing in that span, so perhaps he’s tiring. For the season, he’s 24-15-6 with a 2.67 GAA and a .909 save percentage over 45 appearances.
Calgary is without center Connor Zary as he’s week-to-week due to injury. He has registered 13 goals and 27 points this season. Yegor Sharangovich took his lineup spot Saturday and scored.

Avs See Long Home Streak End
Colorado is always one of the best teams in the NHL at home in part because of the altitude in Denver, but the Avalanche had an 11-game home winning streak, longest by any NHL team this season, snapped in a 2-1 loss to St. Louis – which hurt the Flames as they are chasing the Blues for a wild-card spot.
“The biggest thing that changed the momentum is we took three penalties,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “To get three in the third period when you’re trying to come back in a hockey game, that’s going to kill the momentum. It’s as simple as that.”
Avalanche All-Star Nathan MacKinnon found the net in the loss to reach the 30-goal mark for the fourth consecutive season and tie Mikko Rantanen for the third-longest run in franchise history, behind Michel Goulet (eight games from 1980-81 – 1987-88) and Peter Stastny (six games from 1980-81 – 1985-86).
MacKinnon also extended his home point streak to 24 games (16 goals and 25 assists). He passed Joe Sakic (23 games in 2000-01) for the second-longest stretch in franchise history and trails only his run from 2023-24 (29 goals and 48 assists in 35 games). His 155 home points in the past two seasons (55 goals and 100 assists in 79 games) are 25 more than the next closest player: Edmonton’s Connor McDavid with 130 points.
As of this writing, the NHL odds to consider: MacKinnon is tied for the NHL’s points lead with 109 and is +600 to repeat as the Hart Trophy winner as league MVP behind Edmonton forward Leon Draisaitl (+105), who had the game-winning goal Saturday in OT, and Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck (+110).

NHL Odds, Flames vs Avalanche Expert Prediction
In the only matchup between the clubs in Denver this season, the Avalanche concluded the series with a 2-0 lead by winning 4-2 in Calgary on February 6. Nathan MacKinnon contributed three assists, and Martin Necas netted two goals. Cale Makar tied the game early in the second period, sparking a 3-0 second-period surge for Colorado, which outshot Calgary 17-3. Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves; Dustin Wolf had 30 in defeat.
On March 14 in Calgary, the Avalanche also won by a 4-2 score. Parker Kelly scored twice, and Ryan Lindgren and Valeri Nichushkin also found the net for Colorado. Scott Wedgewood had 22 saves. Blake Coleman and Jonathan Huberdeau scored for Calgary, while Wolf had 24 saves. Flames captain Mikael Backlund did not play due to injury, snapping a 328-game Iron Man streak. He’s back now.
The Avalanche were without two rotational guys on Saturday in winger Joel Kiviranta and defenseman Erik Johnson due to injuries and they are day-to-day. Johnson has missed three straight, with Keaton Middleton taking his spot. Kiviranta missed his second in a row. He has 16 goals, 23 points, 103 hits and 34 blocks in 72 games this year.
We don’t expect another home loss for Colorado, and Blackwood has been playing well despite Saturday’s defeat as he’s 5-2-1 in March eight starts with a 2.23 GAA and .912 save percentage. The Avalanche have a 13-5-1 record in games decided by one goal. The Flames have a -25 scoring differential on the season. Avalanche 4, Flames 2.
