Action makes the Florida Panthers second choice to win the Cup
The Panthers started the offseason a +1400 choice to win the Stanley Cup. Heading into September, Florida is second choice to secure the trophy.
Why the change of heart? Oddsmakers discounted the love hockey future bettors were going to show Florida. At first, the oddsmakers believed Panther backers would ditch Florida.
After all, Florida had failed to win the Stanley Cup last season even though they were the top team heading into the playoffs based on points. But after some searching, bettors realized that Florida offers much better than they should have.
The Panthers have fallen to a co-second choice along with Toronto to win the Cup. There’s a good chance that Florida shows even more odds softness. By the time NHL drops first puck on the new season, the Panthers could be a +550 to +650 outright second choice.
Colorado continues to attract action, but future bettors are off the Lightning
The Avalanche went from +400 odds to +380 odds. Colorado looks like a dynasty in the making. So the fact money continues to roll onto the Avalanche is no surprise.
What is a surprise is how Tampa Bay has gone from third choice to fifth choice. Not only does Tampa offer higher odds, but they’re not even in the top four.
The Lightning played great hockey last season. In 2021-2022, many believed Tampa might take a backward step. But Tampa made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Will the backward step happen this season? If you don’t believe it does, you have to consider backing the Lightning at such a generous price.
Carolina becomes fourth choice, Edmonton second Western Conference choice
Carolina opened at around +1800 odds. So much action has fallen onto the Hurricanes that Carolina is now fourth choice at +1100 to win the Stanley Cup.
The Hurricanes are a solid bunch. Carolina was on the cusp last season. So the fact they’re attracting as much action as they have makes sense.
One team that’s gotten a ton of love that’s a surprise are the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton has leapfrogged the Vegas Golden Knights to become the second choice from the Western Conference to win the Stanley Cup.
So much action has fallen to the Oilers that they might be this season’s wise guy choice. But we should wait at least three weeks before declaring Edmonton the sharps’ pick. A lot can change in the next few weeks.
