Homer’s Leaders

The Orioles lead MLB in homers and are one of four clubs with 100+ homers this season as of Tuesday. The Birds have homered in 28 of the last 29 games, including a club-record 22 consecutive games from June 1-23.

The O’s hit 60 home runs in June, the most homers in a month in franchise history; they became the third team with at least 60 in a month in MLB history, joining the 2023 Braves, who hit 61 in June, and the 2019 Yankees, who hit 74 in August.

The O’s are 46-20 this year when homering, 36-6 when hitting multiple home runs, 19-5 when hitting at least three, and 5-2 when hitting four.

Baltimore has an MLB-best seven players with at least 10 home runs: Gunnar Henderson (26), Anthony Santander (22), Adley Rutschman (15), Jordan Westburg (13), Colton Cowser (12), Ryan Mountcastle (11), and Ryan O’Hearn (10); no other team has more than five such players this season.

Gunnar Henderson at Home Run Derby

Henderson has announced he will compete in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game on July 15 from Globe Life Field in Arlington.

He’s the first known home run hitter in the eight-slugger field, and it’ll be his first time competing in the marquee event.

Two former O’s players have been Home Run Derby champions — Cal Ripken Jr. (1991) and Miguel Tejada (2004), both among the top shortstops in Baltimore’s franchise history.

Henderson also has the opportunity to become the youngest Home Run Derby winner, as he’ll be 23 years and 16 days old at the time of the event. His 26 homers as of Tuesday are tied for second in the majors behind Yankees slugger Aaron Judge (31).

Henderson’s power has taken a big step forward in 2024, as he came into the year with 32 home runs through his first 184 MLB games — 28 of those long balls coming during his American League Rookie of the Year-winning ‘23 campaign.

There’s a strong likelihood that Henderson will also be a first-time All-Star this year. He’s one of the two finalists at shortstop in the AL, along with Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr.

Corbin Burnes on the Hill

It’s ace right-hander and former NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes on the mound Wednesday.

Burnes was activated from the paternity list Monday after being away from the club for the final three games of its weekend series against the Rangers. It didn’t affect Burnes’ turn in the rotation.

Burnes (9-3) earned the victory over Texas last Thursday, allowing one run on nine hits and no walks while striking out five batters over seven innings.

Despite the nine hits, he allowed just one run on a solo home run off the bat of Adolis Garcia. Burnes lowered his ERA to 2.28 in the process and his WHIP to 1.03.

His ability to limit walks complements his solid strikeout rate and contributes to his low ERA and WHIP.

He has seen a down tick in strikeouts, consistent with a trend that he’s exhibited over the past three years, but that hasn’t remotely wounded his effectiveness.

Compared to last season, he’s gone away from his cutter more frequently when he’s been behind in the count, instead trusting his breaking balls more to get back into counts.

Corbin Burnes is still prone to giving up the home run ball, but he has a better ERA and WHIP than he did last season for Milwaukee.

Burnes hasn’t failed to go fewer than six innings in the past 12 starts, hasn’t gone fewer than five at all this season, and has allowed as many as four earned runs just once (when he allowed four in seven innings in June). The Orioles are 12-5 in his starts.

Burnes is 2-0 with an ERA of 1.59 and 14 strikeouts in two career appearances vs. Seattle. He beat the Mariners at Camden Yards in mid-May in a dominant outing.

Seattle Mariners Moneyline

Trades for Seattle

The Mariners lead the AL West, but they are floundering of late and have the worst team batting average in baseball (.218).

No doubt that Seattle will be looking to add a bat ahead of the trade deadline. The Chicago White Sox are clear sellers and have Luis Robert Jr. and Tommy Pham available.

Each of them could make sense for different reasons. Furthermore, the Miami Marlins are clear sellers and could be willing to move Josh Bell.

The bullpen also could be addressed, but it seems less pressing, especially as Gregory Santos works his way back from injury.

Santos, who carried a 3.39 ERA with 66 strikeouts to just 17 walks for the White Sox last year, started a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday.

Injury to Consider

Catcher/DH Mitch Garver had X-rays on his right wrist come back negative after being hit by a pitch during Sunday’s loss to the Twins.

Garver appears to have avoided a significant injury after exiting Sunday’s contest early. He’s day-to-day. Garver was one of the team’s big off season acquisitions but is hitting just .172, but does have 10 homers and 32 RBIs.

Last Game

Seattle had won nine straight series at home before losing one over the weekend to Minnesota.

It was the second-longest such streak at home in Mariners history. Sunday marked just the fourth time in 39 games in which Seattle lost when outhitting its opponent.

Logan Gilbert on the Hill

It’s ace righty Logan Gilbert (5-4) on the mound Wednesday. Gilbert allowed two runs on four hits and struck out three without walking a batter over six innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Friday.

Gilbert had posted back-to-back starts of eight shutout innings, so this was a small step back. It was an improvement on his previous start versus the Twins, in which he allowed a season-high eight runs over four innings in Minnesota on May 9.

Since that start, Gilbert has completed at least six frames in each of his last nine outings, earning eight quality starts in that span. He’s at a stellar 2.72 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 102:21 K:BB over 112.1 innings across 17 outings.

Gilbert leads the majors with 14 quality starts this year. Over his last 5 starts, he holds a 1.51 ERA (6 ER, 35.2 IP) with 1 BB, 31 SO and a 0.60 WHIP, including a 21.0 inning scoreless streak, the longest by a Mariners pitcher this season.

The 27-year-old hasn’t missed a single start since debuting in May 2021. He notably added a splitter with great success in 2023, and he’s tacked on a cutter this season that ranks among the nastier pitches in baseball. Gilbert should be named an All-Star this year.

Gilbert’s lone outing vs. the Orioles was last year when he beat them in allowing just one run on two hits over seven innings.
