Why Bet on Baltimore Orioles?
The Orioles are 1-2 on the road this season after losing two of three in Pittsburgh over the weekend – both losses by one run. In Sunday’s 3-2 loss, Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson made a diving stop near second base on Edward Oliveras’ grounder in a try for a game-ending double play, then threw wildly past first for an error as two runs scored and gave the Pirates the win.

“I usually make that play 99 times out of 100, and it just so happens that the throw got away from me right there,” Henderson said. “That was pretty unfortunate.”
All-Star reliever Yennier Cano (1-1) suffered the loss against Pittsburgh on Sunday, allowing one earned run on two hits and one walk over 0.2 innings. He did not record a strikeout. Cano entered the game in the ninth with a one-run lead, earning the save chance in place of a resting Craig Kimbrel, who had pitched in each of the previous two contests. Cano allowed the first three batters to reach base but then induced Rowdy Tellez into a fielder’s choice. A groundball by the next batter, Olivares, followed and was the fateful error by Henderson. Prior to Sunday’s outing, Cano had allowed four baserunners and recorded five strikeouts over 4.1 scoreless innings.
A bigger reason for the loss was the continuation of Baltimore’s offensive struggles. After scoring 24 runs over the first two games of the season, the O’s have scored only 23 over the seven games since. The Orioles are averaging 3.3 runs per game during that span.
Ryan Mountcastle went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and a run scored in Sunday’s loss. Mountcastle had cooled off entering Sunday, going 1-for-16 over his previous four games before breaking out of the slump. He was involved in both of the Orioles’ runs, hitting an RBI double and coming around to score on an Anthony Santander single in the fourth inning. Mountcastle is batting .294 with a home run, eight RBI, four runs scored and five doubles.
It’s right-hander and former NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes on the mound. Burnes came away with a no-decision in last Wednesday’s 4-3 win over the Royals, allowing two runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings with three strikeouts. Burnes fell just short of his second straight quality start to begin the season, getting pulled after exactly 100 pitches (67 strikes).
Burnes has four good pitches as he throws his cutter 55% of the time while mixing in four other pitches. He notched a 22.1% whiff rate with the cutter and a whopping 49% with his curveball last season. Batters whiffed 43.3 percent of the time on the slider and 30% against the changeup. Burnes didn’t get a decision in his only career appearance against Boston after he allowed three runs (2 ER) on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts on April 23, 2023 in Milwaukee.
The O’s are 53-31 away from Camden Yards since the start of last season, the second-best road winning percentage in MLB during that time behind the Braves at 55-31 (.640); the 52-29 (.642) road record in 2023 was tied for the best in MLB with Atlanta, and tied with the 1997 Orioles for the best record on the road in club history (since 1954).

Why Bet on Boston Red Sox?
The Red Sox have to be thrilled to be 7-3 considering they played four games in Seattle, three in Oakland and three at the LA Angels to open the season. The Sox are 2-0-1 in series; the last time they won or split each of their first 3 series was in 2018, when they started 3-0-0. The last times the Red Sox won as many as 7 of their first 10 games were 2021 (7-3), 2018 (9-1), 2015 (7-3), and 2006 (7-3).

The Sox routed the Halos 12-2 on Sunday to complete the road trip as catcher Reese McGuire drove in a career-high five runs. McGuire had a three-run homer in the sixth that extended Boston’s lead to 7-0. He also drove in runs with a grounder in the eighth and hit in the ninth.
Outfielder Tyler O’Neill hit his third homer of the series and also became the first player to have at least five home runs and five walks in their first nine games with the Red Sox. O’Neill was moved to third in the order, taking the spot that had belonged to Trevor Story (shoulder), who is unavailable for an undetermined amount of time.
Story damaged his non-throwing shoulder in Friday night’s road win over the Los Angeles Angels. While Boston placed the two-time All-Star on the 10-day injured list Saturday, Story seems to believe he will need longer than a week and a half to recover. A worst-case scenario, of course, entails season-ending surgery.
Though Story was still finding his rhythm at the plate in the early part of the season, his defense had already proven game-changing. Story played in just 94 games in 2022 after missing significant time with injuries to his right hand and left foot. He appeared in only 43 games last season after recovering from major offseason surgery on his right elbow. Manager Alex Cora plans for his team to platoon at both shortstop and second base while Story is sidelined.
While the Sox were off Monday, they signed 23-year-old Ceddanne Rafaela to a contract extension. Terms of the deal are not yet known, but it’s the second young player the Red Sox have locked up on a long-term contract after they inked Brayan Bello during spring training. Rafaela has hit only .239/.282/.389 over his first 38 major-league games, but he has displayed elite defense in center field and Boston is optimistic his bat will eventually come around.
Bello (1-0, 5.40) is on the hill Tuesday. He did not factor into the decision last Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings against Oakland. He struck out six. All four of the runs charged to Bello came on a pair of two-run homers, one in the second inning off the bat of Shea Langeliers followed by a JJ Bleday blast in the third. The 24-year-old Bello’s has given up six earned runs through his first 10 innings this season after going 12-11 with a 4.24 ERA last year.
Bello has made two career starts vs. the Orioles. In September 2022, he allowed three runs over 5.1 innings of a road loss and in September 2023, he allowed three runs over five at Fenway Park in a win. The Red Sox are 19-11 (.633) in his starts since the beginning of 2023.
Before Tuesday’s home opener, the Red Sox will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2004 World Series-winning team. The team also will honor the late Tim Wakefield before the game with a video tribute. The Sox are wearing a patch with Tim Wakefield’s number 49 all season.
