Djokovic The Men’s Favorite

He may not be the top seed, but Novak Djokovic will be the No. 1 player in the world after this tournament, no matter what happens this week. He is also looking to extend his grand slam record with a 24th title and win three of the four slams in a single season.

MyBookie expects that to be the case, as they still have Djokovic as the favorite at -111. Carlos Alcaraz is the next option at +175. Alcaraz is the top seed after beating Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, and Djokovic won their battle in the French Open semifinals.

No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, is next up at +1100, while Jannik Sinner is +1200. Sinner is the No. 6 seed, and both he and Medvedev are in Alcaraz’s half of the draw and face round of 16 matches on Monday.

Switaek Loss Shakes Up Women’s Favorites

No. 1 Iga Swiatek, the defending champion and the 2023 French Open champion, lost on Sunday night to Jelena Ostapenko. She was the favorite at +175, so her round of 16 loss changed the futures betting.

American Coco Gauff is now the favorite as she will face Ostapenko instead of Swiatek, who has a 7-1 record against Gauff. That loss moved Gauff from +500 to +275.

Aryna Sabalenka, the No. 2 seed who won the 2023 Australian Open, went from +400 in the bottom half of the draw to +300, and Wimbledon champ Marketa Vondrousova went from +900 to +675. Those two could play in the semifinals, though Jess Pegula (+900) and Madison Keys (+2000) are possible quarterfinal opponents for Vondoursova.

Karolina Muchova, a slam finalist this year at the French, is also at the top of the draw with Ostapenko and Gauff. She has +650 odds and will face No. 30 Sorana Cristea, who is +2500 in the quarters. Ostapenko was way down the list before her win on Sunday and is now at +900.

Another interesting option in the bottom half of the draw is No. 5 Ons Jabeur. She has grand slam wins against Sabalenka, a potential quarterfinal opponent and would love a chance at a rematch against Vondrousova after the Wimbledon final loss. The Tunisian is +1400 to win her first slam.

American Male Odds

No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev is a former champion in Flushing Meadows as the 2021 winner. The men’s side has three American players left, but they are all in Djokovic’s half. We know there will be an American semifinalist as Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe face off in one of Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

No American male has won a grand slam since Andy Roddick more than 20 years ago. Taylor Fritz, who will face Djokovic in the quarters, is +2500, but he is 0-7 against Djokovic, including a 6-0, 6-4 loss last month. If Fritz can solve Djokovic, he is a combined 7-1 against Tiafoe and Shelton.

Novak Djokovic missed the Australian Open earlier this year due to his vaccination status and, despite being the betting favorite for the US Open, is unlikely to compete in the fourth Grand Slam. Djokovic is still unvaccinated and the USTA is following the federal government’s stance that unvaccinated foreign citizens cannot enter the country.

There’s a petition to allow Djokovic to play, but it’s unlikely to make a difference. The 21-time Grand Slam winner recently withdrew from the Canadian Open as the Canadian government has the same vaccination policy as the US.

Rafael Nadal, meanwhile, isn’t playing in Canada due to an abdominal injury suffered during his quarterfinal win at Wimbledon. Nadal withdrew from Wimbledon and hasn’t played since. His status is worth keeping an eye on.

Medvedev the Real Favorite

Daniil Medvedev is not only the best hard court player in the world, but holds distinction as the world No. 1. He’s the defending US Open champion and is looking to become the first player to win the event in back-to-back years since Roger Federer in 2007 and 2008.

Medvedev recently won the Los Cabos Open and is a favorite to win the Canadian Open. It’s hard to see anyone stopping him right now.

Serena’s Last US Open

Serena Williams made a surprise return at Wimbledon earlier this year, but that run was cut short as she lost in the first round. Williams vowed to at least play the US Open later this year after her Wimbledon loss, but made no other comments on her playing future.

However, Williams made it official on Tuesday, announcing that she was “evolving” away from her playing days – she doesn’t like the term “retiring,” but that’s what she’s doing, for all intents and purposes.

Winning the US Open would be a remarkable achievement and a great way for Williams to conclude her career, but it’s highly unlikely. She did win her first match in the Canadian Open, so it’s worth tracking to see if she can gain some momentum against higher caliber players.

Is Swiatek Rattled?

Iga Swiatek, the betting favorite, had won more than 30 matches in a row prior to Wimbledon, where she was also the overwhelming betting favorite. However, she lost in the third round and hasn’t looked the same since.

Swiatek participated in the Poland Open (her home country), but lost in the quarter-finals to Alize Cornet. She also needed three sets to win her second round match, which is something she rarely needed during her dominant run earlier this year.

Novak Djokovic Unlikely to Participate

Djokovic moved within one Grand Slam of Rafael Nadal after winning Wimbledon, but might not have a chance to tie the Spaniard because of his vaccination status. The Serbian star missed the Australian Open for the same reason earlier this season.

While the USTA doesn’t have a specific rule against unvaccinated players participating in the US Open, it is adhering to the federal government guideline that states all people coming into the country must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Regardless of your thoughts on Djokovic’s vaccine stance, credit to him for dealing with the consequences in a respectful manner. He isn’t lobbying for an exception and seems prepared to miss the tournament.

Kyrgios-Tsitsipas Feud

Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tstisipas had a memorable, five-set quarter-final match at this year’s Wimbledon. Notably, the normally stoic Tsitsipas was thrown by Kyrgios’ eccentric and over-the-top play and actions on the court. At one point, Tsitsipas purposefully hit an overhand smash right at the Australian and looked visibly frustrated.

“It’s constant bullying, that’s what he does. He bullies the opponents,” Tsitsipas said after Wimbledon. “He was probably a bully at school himself. I don’t like bullies. I don’t like people that put other people down. He has some good traits in his character, as well. But … he also has a very evil side to him, which if it’s exposed, it can really do a lot of harm and bad to the people around him.”

Kyrgios, on July 26, announced on Instagram he was partnering with Jack Sock in doubles at the US Open, adding: “I’ve had Stefanos as a partner there so it can’t get much worse than that.”

Naomi’s New Coach

Naomi Osaka took Wimbledon off and hasn’t played since the French Open. She’s due to compete as a wild card in the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, California, beginning August 1.

Osaka will be preparing for that tournament – and potentially the US Open – without a coach. The four-time Grand Slam champion is no longer working with Wim Fissette, who announced on Instagram the duo ended their partnership earlier this month. Fissette has been Osaka’s coach since the start of the 2020 season.

Djokovic (Still) Leading The Way

The men’s US Open betting odds haven’t changed over the last week, which isn’t too surprising as there weren’t any significant shifts in players’ form. The current no.1, Novak Djokovic continues to have a firm hold of the tag as the betting favorite, priced at +100.

At this point, it seems highly unlikely for any other player than Djokovic to be priced as the betting favorite in any tennis tournament that features the Serb in the field. He has been a class above everyone else throughout the year and is only one Grand Slam title away from being crowned as the undisputed best tennis player in history.

Djokovic travels to USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with a 86% win rate on hard courts over his career and a 88% win rate in 2021 (14/2). He has also won the US Open three times before (2011, 2015, 2018) and would have arguably won it in 2020 had he not been disqualified in R4.

The only player in the field who seems capable of challenging Djokovic is Daniil Medvedev (+500), who holds the second-best hard court record of the year. He has played 16 hard court matches in 2021 and won all but three, which translates to an 84% win rate.

What’s more, Medvedev has already reached the finals of the US Open in 2019 and made it to the semi-finals in 2020, so he should feel confident in his ability to emulate another deep run.

Ladies Fields Feels Open

The ladies’ circuit has felt very open over the past few years, with Serena Williams no longer the dominant force she once was. Although it’s saddening to see a legend lose its stride, it’s also refreshing seeing a much more competitive field, where more than a couple of players can compete for glory.

Still, the bookmakers have made up their minds and priced Naomi Osaka as a +300 favorite, over Bianca Andreescu (+700) in second. Seeing Andreescu priced so much higher than Osaka might seem a bit shocking; however, it’s worth pointing out that Andreescu had never made it past the qualifying round in her previous two US Open appearances until she won the whole thing in 2019.

For Osaka, the 2021 US Open will be her attempt at her third US Open title. If she achieves that feat, Osaka will become the second player in the last decade to secure a hard court double in the same season.

Even though Osaka is billed as the favorite, her hard court record isn’t that much better than the rest of the field. Across her career, Osaka has recorded a 67% win rate on hard courts and a 79% win rate (15/4) in 2021.

In comparison, Ashleigh Barty holds a 73% career win rate on hard courts but the exact same 79% win rate this year. Andreescu, meanwhile, has won 77% of hard court matches in her career and 75% in 2021.

Although all impressive numbers, none can compare to Garbine Muguruza, who has won 80% of hard court matches in 2021, with a 24/6 record. However, she has never made it past R4 at the US Open (2017) and has managed only R2 in 2020.

Djokovic Favoured to Complete the Grand Slam

Don Budge was the first player to win all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single year in 1938. Since him, there were 16 players who have done the same; however, only five in the singles titles.

On the men’s side of the competition, Rod Laver was the only player besides Budge to win four Grand Slams on the year (1962, 1969), but there was not a single player to repeat that success since him. That, however, could change in September.

After winning the 2021 Australian Open, the 2021 French Open, and now the 2021 Wimbledon Championship, Novak Djokovic is only one Grand Slam title away from forever etching his name in the history books.

With his win in Wimbledon, the Serb has earned the 20th Grand Slam title of his career. He has now tied with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as the most successful tennis player in the world and is only one title away from earning the prestigious title as the GOAT.

Djokovic’s success in 2021 was unmatched, and it’s more than fair to say that he has been the best player of the year. Knowing that should not surprise you to see Djokovic priced as the odds-on favorite (+100) to win the US Open.

He has won the US Open twice before in his career (2011, 2015, 2018), but not once in his last two attempts. Still, it will take a lot to upset the Serbian tennis superstar with the form he has been showing.

A Much More Competitive Field For the Ladies

While the men’s side of the competition is dominated by one name, the women’s field looks far more competitive. Naomi Osaka will travel to US Open as the odds-on favorite (+300), with Bianca Andreescu (+700), Ashleigh Barty (+800), and Serena Williams (+800) priced close behind on the US Open outright betting odds.

That isn’t too surprising considering there is not a single female tennis player that was as dominant as Djokovic. Interestingly enough, the main favorite (Osaka) struggled to perform in the French Open, which she left prematurely and hasn’t attended Wimbledon either.

Regardless, Osaka is the reigning US Open champion, having won the final Grand Slam of the year twice in the last three years (2018, 2020).

Last year’s finalist, Victoria Azarenka, is priced as high as +1200 to win in September, which isn’t too surprising. The Belarus tennis star wasn’t too successful over the years and hasn’t made it further than R4 at any of the three Grand Slams of 2021.

Since winning back-to-back Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, Azarenka added five quarter-finals appearances in 2014-2016. Since then, Azarenka’s best Grand Slam placement happened at last year’s US Open.

Bianca Andreescu, Ashleigh Barty, and Ashleigh Barty are three strong candidates to derail Osaka and prevent her from defending her title. Will either manage to achieve that feat, however, remains to be seen.

The U.S. Open begins today, and while we all knew that it would be a whole lot different than what we are used to, we perhaps didn’t realize just how different. The women’s tournament started this morning in an empty stadium that was more than a little odd to see, but it’s something that we are going to need to become accustomed to over the next couple of weeks. The players who arrived in New York City have essentially been holed up and routinely tested since arriving, which must be an adjustment for them. There are also some familiar faces who did not make the trip, opting instead to skip through injury or in preparation for the clay season. Let’s take a closer look at the favorite to win the US Open so you can make your bets against his Tennis odds.

US Open Betting Analysis: Djokovic is Favorite: will he win?

As much as this tournament will be a test for the players who did decide to play, it is also a test for the city and the tennis fans in New York. The Big Apple was hit hard by the pandemic, so it is going to be interesting to see how they handle an event of this size, and how fans deal with not being able to attend a tournament they love. On the court, it is Novak Djokovic who is the overwhelming favorite to win, especially with Nadal and Federer out, but can he rise to the occasion in an empty stadium?

Djokovic’s Part of the Bracket

If truth be told, it looks like pretty smooth sailing for Djokovic all the way to the semi-final. He has had some issues with neck stiffness, but he seemed to get better as the week wore on, winning the Western & Southern Open by beating Milos Raonic in the final. That tournament, which was held in NYC instead of Cincinnati as it usually is, was the 80th career title for Djokovic. Now, it’s all about winning the US Open and landing his 17th major.

He will open the tournament against Damir Dzumhur and should have a really easy time of it. Djokovic’s first game against a seeded player would not come until at least the 3rd round, with Jan-Lennard Struff on the horizon. It is worth noting that he beat Struff in straight sets when they met in the Western & Southern Open last week. You have to say that his path to the semi-final looks pretty clear. If he gets there, potential opponents could include Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alexander Zverev.

Who are Djokovic’s Main Threats?

In his part of the bracket, the toughest opponent is not likely going to show up until the 4th round, where hard-serving John Isner looks like a possible opponent. When you consider that Djokovic is 10-2 versus Isner and has won that meeting 7 straight times, you get the sense that he is definitely semi-final bound.

That would leave either Tsitsipas or Zverev as his toughest opponents on the way to the final, and I think he is more that capable of beating both.

I think Djokovic makes it to the final and goes against Milos Raonic, just as he did last week. I also think that we are looking at the same result, so I am all over Djokovic to win the U.S. Open.

With the U.S. Open set to begin on Monday, we thought it might be fun to take a look back at this history of this fantastic tournament. Tennis – US Open: History, winners, what to expect

U.S. Open History

The first tournament was played back in 1881, although back then it was known as the U.S. national Championship. Back then, the tournament was played on grass at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island. It stayed there through to 1915, after which the tournament was moved to the West Side Tennis Club in New York. It was a group of roughly 100 players who petitioned for the move, with the belief being that the city was where the largest congregation of players, clubs, and fans were located.

There was a period, from 1921-1923, when the tournament was played in Germantown, Pennsylvania to allow for the construction of a 14,000-seat stadium at the West Side Tennis Club. In 1922, the seeding system was employed so as to separate the best players in the early rounds. By 1924, the decision was made to make the U.S. Open a major tournament.

The Open era began in 1968, allowing professional tennis players to compete. This basically was when the tournament rose to global prominence and made it a must watch event. In 1978, the tournament was held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NYC, which is where it is still held to this day.

Notable Winners

When looking at previous winners, you really need to look at before and after 1968, which is when the Open era began. Prior to that era, it was Richard Sears, William Larned, and Bill Tilden who had the most wins on the men’s side, winning it 7 times each. On the ladies’ side, no one got close to Molla Mallory, who won it 8 times before the Open era.

Molla Mallory actually won 4 more titles in the Open era, but she has been eclipsed in that generation by Chris Evert and Serena Williams, both of whom have 5 wins since 1968. Over on the men’s side, it is a 3-way tie for wins in the Open era, with Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, and Roger Federer all winning 5, with Federer winning it in 5 straight years.

What to Expect in 2020

It may sound like a clichéd thing to say, but I think that the only thing we can expect this year is the unexpected. It is going to be interesting to see how players adapt to playing in empty stadiums in what is usually one of the most boisterous events on the tour. On the men’s side, you would need to think that Djokovic or Nadal are the favorites, but with 5 different winners in each of the last 5 years, the women’s side looks to be wide open.

The winner should come from the above list of women, though. Can Williams finally break through with a Grand Slam win this year? Yes, of course, she’s Serena Williams. But, she’s not the pick.

Angelique Kerber won Wimbledon. The 6-3, 6-3 win over Serena at the Wimbledon Finals gives her an edge over the Deco-Turf courts at the U.S. Open. Since winning Wimbledon, Kerber’s form has been off. She pushed Madison Keys to 3-sets, Kerber lost the second set via tie-breaker, at the Western & Southern Open.

Despite not being the ATP’s No. 1, Djokovic is a clear favorite. He might also be the clear tennis player to back to win the U.S. Open Championship. Djokovic has won two U.S. Open Championships, 2011 and 2015. Djokovic beat his biggest U.S. Open competitor 6-4, 6-4 at the Western & Southern Open.

However, the Western & Southern Open doesn’t compare to the U.S. Open. Roger Federer headed into Wimbledon a massive favorite. He’s yet to recover from his early exit, a 5-set loss in the quarterfinals to Kevin Anderson. Federer hasn’t won the U.S. Open since 2008. He’s a low odd throwout.

Andy Murray’s form isn’t near good enough to challenge for the win. Alexander Zverez couldn’t escape Round 2 last year. That leaves Rafael Nadal to win the U.S. Open.

Nadal took the U.S. Open last year. He hasn’t played since winning the Rogers Cup over Stefanos Tsisipas in early August. Nadal took an entire month off between the French Open, a win, and Wimbledon. He pushed Djokovic to 5-sets. Djokovic beat Nadal 10-8 in the final set.

Serena Williams

Having won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon last season and looking to register a calendar-year Grand Slam, Serena suffered an upset in the semifinals of the 2015 US Open at the hands of Italian veteran Roberta Vinci. This year’s US Open will therefore be a chance for the queen of tennis to make things right. Having won the previous four consecutive US Open titles prior to last year’s upset and with a total of six US Open titles to her name, the World No. 1 definitely knows her way around the Flushing Meadows, making her a rightful odds-on favorite. That said, the 34-year- old American is reportedly not in full health, as she is still nursing a shoulder injury sustained when she won the Wimbledon in July. This injury clearly inhibited her performance in Rio 2016, where she was bundled out of the competition in the third round. Cautious optimism is thus recommended when betting on her to win it all in the 2016 WTA US Open.

Angelique Kerber

If there’s ever a person to trust for the US Open title if Williams doesn’t come through, it’s Kerber. The World No. 2 has been in sensational form this season, reaching the Wimbledon final and the gold-medal match in Rio 2016. She did lose to Williams and Monica Puig, respectively, in those two tournaments, but the German managed to win the 2016 Australian Open and boasts of a 47-14 record this season, including 4 victories and 1 defeat in her latest 5 WTA singles matches. With such a reputation, she will definitely be a trendy pick in this tourney.

BEST SLEEPERS

Garbine Muguruza

Since her French Open triumph in June, which was her first-ever major title, Muguruza has struggled with her form. Even so, this a player who comes with a lot of upsides, including a tenacious no-pressure attitude when facing the top guns of the game, as is proven by her finals victory in Roland Garros over Serena. Given the right circumstances and a bit of some luck on her side, the 22-year- old—who has a 28-13 record this year—could be a sweet sleeper pick for the title.

Simona Halep

Halep has been an equally strong performer this season, boasting of a decent 36-13 record on the year. The World No. 5 has previously struggled in Grand Slam matches, but with three titles to her name this season, including the recent title win in Toronto at the Rogers Cup, and a strong show in Wimbledon that saw her reach the quarterfinals; the Romanian could easily shock her way into the 2016 US Open final, especially if Serena and Co. don’t live up to their big hype.

Agnieszka Radawanska

Radawanska did start the 2016 season in style with a title at the Shenzhen Gemdale Open and has performed quite serviceable since then. Being a rather small-name player brings her value somewhat down, but her ability to go deep in tournaments—as is affirmed by a pair of semi-final losses to Serena Williams this season—makes her a player worth of being looking at, especially if she can take care of her early opponents and avoid a draw against Serena before the Finals. By the way, Rawadanska is coming into the US Open on the back of a morale-boosting Connecticut Open title win, so expect her to be all fired up for a strong show.

Venus Williams

Since making a commendable appearance in the semifinals of Wimbledon, Venus has been playing quite well. In addition to that, the Williams sister made the last eight in 2015, underlining her potential to go deep in this tournament this year. Plus, with two US Open titles already to her name, Venus has all the credentials to be taken a serious longshot tourney pick.

My Prediction and Pick

With Serena all banged up, I am inclined to go with Kerber as my top pick, given her consistency on the court this season and the excellent form she brings with her to the 2016 WTA US Open. Pick: Kerber

2016 Men’s US Open Betting Predictions

If you go by the betting odds alone, it would seem that no-one on the men’s side are going to be able to touch Novak Djokovic (EV), the favorite to win it all, and Andy Murray (+125), who is having quite the unforgettable summer. Djokovic is going to be looking for some redemption after a performance at Wimbledon that was truly sub-par. He went out early, and then had to sit back and watch Murray plow through the field on the way to the championship. The Scotsman followed up that win by taking the gold at the men’s Olympic tournament in Rio.

While this tournament seems to be set up nicely for these two guys, they are going to have some tough matches along the way. Canadian Milos Raonic (+1400) lost in the Winbledon final, and looks set to have a major breakout year. There is a very good chance that Djokovic may have to face Rafael Nadal (+2250) along the way, and while the Spaniard has fallen off a little due to injury, he still poses a legitimate threat. This is the year of Andy Murray, and I like him to get the win.

2016 Women’s US Open Betting Predictions

Serena Williams (+125) has dominated the women’s game for as long as anyone can remember, but 2016 has seen her start to slip a little. The US Open was wee her dream of a calendar Grand Slam came to an end, and she has only won two singles titles since that time, with Wimbledon being one of them. She has made it to the final of every Grand Slam event this year, but there are signs that she may be vulnerable.

Angelique Kerber (+700) is perhaps the biggest threat to Williams, and with a win here, she would take over the number one spot that Serena has held for 187 consecutive weeks. Simona Halep (+700) and Garbine Muguruza (+900) are also considered threats, and it is the latter of those two who I believe will make some real noise in this tournament. If Serena’s shoulder holds up, she will win, but that’s a pretty big if right now, as she was forced to withdraw from her last event a couple of weeks ago. I would play Muguruza if you fancy a little bit of a longshot.

In Depth Analysis On The US Open Men’s Winning Predictions

First Quarter Preview

This is where the tournament favorite Novak Djokovic resides, and it has to be said the he has a tough road to the semi-finals, especially when you consider that he is still nursing a sore wrist. The dark horse in this quarter is going to be Marin Cilic (+1600), who would meet Djokovic in the quarter-final if both men make it through. Cilic had a bit of a breakthrough at the Cincinnati Open, where he took out Andy Murray, a player he has routinely struggled against. That said, Djokovic should still come through if that wrist holds up.

Second Quarter Preview

Milos Raonic (+1400) is having what can best be described as a breakout year, making it all the way to the Wimbledon final before losing to Murray. His biggest competition in this part of the draw is Rafael Nadal (+2250), but the Spaniard has wrist issues, and hasn’t really been a threat at a major tournament for quite some time. Look for Raonic to make it to the semi-finals.

Third Quarter Preview

Stan Wawrinka (+1800) is the man to beat here, but he has shown little to suggest that he can make it out of what should be a tough quarter. This is a part of the draw that is loaded with talent, and Wawrinka has what looks like the toughest road to the semis of any of the top seeds. At the end of the day, I believe it will be Nick Kyrgios (+4800) who survives this brutal section of the draw.

Fourth Quarter Preview

There is no hotter player in tennis right now than Andy Murray. The Scotsman has won 22 of his last 23 games, and has a Wimbledon championship and an Olympic gold medal to his name during that run. I could go on about the other players in this part of the draw, but there really seems to be no point in doing so. Murray is playing the best tennis of his career, and should get to the semis quite comfortably.

US Open Championship Prediction

I’m pretty sure that everyone is hoping for a Djokovic/Murray final, and I believe that is what we will all get. The only sticky point is that wrist injury of Djokovic’s, but no matter who Murray faces, I think he will beat them and take the title.

Her early exit there may actually be a blessing in disguise, as she got herself a little extra rest and relaxation heading into this event.

Angelique Kerber

It has been a very solid year for the German, as she has made it to a pair of different Grand Slam finals. She got here year off to a great start with a win at the Australian Open. She went out in the opening round of the French Open, but landed in the final at Wimbledon, where she lost to Serena Williams. She should be on the opposite side of the draw from Serena, which means we may get a possible re-match.

Garbine Muguruza

It has been something of an up and down season for the Spaniard, but a win at the French Open makes it clear that she has the ability to win when her game is on. She has made a bit of a habit of going out early in tournaments this season, so she will be looking for a favorable draw that will help her build a head of steam.

Agnieske Radawanska

She started out her 2016 by winning the Shenzhen Gemdale Open, but has not made it to a final since then. That said, she has made a habit of going deep in tournaments, and has a pair of semi-final losses to Serena Williams on her resume this season. If she can land on the other side of the draw from Serena, there is no reason why she can’t make it all the way to the final.

Simona Halep

After a slow start to the season, the Romanian has found her feet, and has three titles to her name this season, the most recent of which came in Toronto at the Rogers Cup. She made it all the way to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, and should at least get that far in this one, assuming the draw goes her way.
