The New Orleans Pelicans and Philadelphia 76ers both have very talented rosters but both are well under .500 this season in large part due to injuries to key guys.
They meet Friday in the City of Brotherly Love with the Sixers favored on the NBA odds, but the final number will depend on some of those injuries.

New Orleans Pelicans Analysis
The Pelicans got All-Star Zion Williamson back from a long injury absence on Tuesday and played decently in a home loss to Minnesota, but the Pels rested Williamson in the second of a back-to-back on Wednesday and they lost to a bad Portland team, 119-100. The Blazers built a 16-point lead in the first quarter and were never threatened. Portland shot 67.4% (31 of 46) through the first 24 minutes, when their 75 points set a season high for a first half.
“All of us were surprised by the lack of urgency. It was not a competitive game by our standards at all,” Pels coach Willie Green told reporters postgame. “They came out and punched us in the mouth right away, and we couldn’t recover.”

Brandon Ingram
Ingram (left ankle) missed his 14th straight game, and then another forward and top defender Herb Jones left the game in the third quarter because of a right shoulder injury. He missed 18 games earlier this season with a similar injury. Trey Murphy has missed both games this week. This team just can’t catch a break.
The Streak
New Orleans had the NBA’s longest streak of games with at least 10 free throws made came to an end at 49 as the Pels were 8-for-11 from the charity stripe. CJ McCollum shot 10-of-17 from the field in the loss for 23 points – a night after going 1-of-14 in Tuesday’s defeat to the Timberwolves. Even with Tuesday’s stat line, McCollum has shot 50.3% from the field over the past two weeks.
Dejounte Murray
Murray was questionable on Wednesday with a sore elbow but played and had 20 points and five assists. He is averaging 2.5 steals per game, which is ranked 2nd in the NBA, and 3.9 deflections per game, which is ranked 5th. He is questionable for Friday.
Jordan Hawkins
Hawkins’ struggles continued as he was just 4-for-16 from the field for 10 points. The former first-round pick has been off over his last eight games, shooting 22.4 percent from the floor while posting averages of 6.0 points. But with Murphy (ankle), Jones (shoulder) and Brandon Boston (leg) banged up heading into Friday’s game, the Pelicans could be forced to hand Hawkins more minutes.
Zion Williamson
Williamson recorded 22 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in his 28 minutes in his return to action in the 104-97 loss to the Timberwolves on Tuesday and he’ll play Friday. Green added that Williamson looked “as good as I’ve seen him after being out for as long as he’s been.” New Orleans is 2-5 in the seven games Zion has played.
Yves Missi
One major bright spot has been rookie center Missi, the 21st overall pick in the 2024 draft. Among all NBA rookies, he’s 1st in double-doubles with eight, first in rebounding (8.4) and third in blocks per game (1.4). Not only is Missi dominating against other rookies, he is ranked 2nd in the NBA in offensive rebounds per game (3.8). He was the NBA Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December.

Philadelphia 76ers Analysis
The 76ers rested All-Stars Joel Embiid and Paul George on Wednesday – as well as Kyle Lowry and Andre Drummond — simply because they were facing the awful Washington Wizards, and Philly won 109-103. Embiid, Drummond and Lowry are out again Friday but George is likely to play.
Tyrese Maxey
Maxey scored the go-ahead basket with 23.7 seconds left and finished with 29 points. The Wizards’ Kyle Kuzma appeared to get away with a travel on a bucket that gave Washington a 103-101 lead. Maxey, though, came through with two free throws that tied the score. His next basket was the winner. It was Maxey’s 12th game this season with at least 25 points and five assists.
Nine of Maxey’s points came off a trio of three-pointers, extending his streak of games with multiple made threes to 14 (fourth longest active streak in NBA). Maxey’s 53 triples during this streak rank third throughout the league dating back to Dec. 8.

Best Performances
Making a spot start at center in place of the injured Embiid (foot), Guerschon Yabusele put together one of his finest performances of the season with 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks, falling just one point shy of his season-high mark of 22 points set during the Nov. 27 loss to the Rockets. Wednesday was the 13th start of the season for Yabusele, who’s now averaging 9.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 29.1 minutes as part of Philadelphia’s first unit. But when Embiid and Drummond are healthy, he doesn’t play nearly as much. But he should get heavy minutes again Friday.
Kelly Oubre Jr.
Oubre Jr. had 15 points on Wednesday and has now scored at least 15 points in three consecutive games. He is averaging 18.7 points on 52.4-percent shooting and 6.7 rebounds during these three contests. Eric Gordon’s 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting matched his season scoring high (15, Oct. 27 at Indiana). His four three-pointers (of seven) set a new season high.
Nick Nurse
The Sixers are on the outside looking in at the play-in tournament as they have been a big disappointment in the 2024-25 season. Head coach Nurse said earlier this week that he doesn’t have enough data on Embiid’s and George’s two-man game yet and wants to prioritize getting them more reps together. Nurse’s overall message after Wednesday’s loss was that it’s time to get going.
“My message is, like, we got a job to do here, man,” he said. “You know what I’m saying? Like, we got games. If you’re physically able to get out there and play your butt off, you need to do it, right? I really believe in that. We all got jobs to do and for us, it’s coaching games and playing games. That’s kinda my message for the next month.”
^Pelicans vs 76ers Series History
First of two meetings this season with Philadelphia visiting New Orleans on March 24. In the Pelicans era, the Sixers lead all-time 23-21 but New Orleans won both last season. The one Philly was 103-95 behind 23 points and 12 rebounds from Zion Williamson. Tobias Harris had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Sixers, and Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 20. They were without stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

2021 Philadelphia 76ers vs New Orleans Pelicans
Two of the NBA’s most dominant players will face off on Friday for the first time in the 76ers’ Joel Embiid and Pelicans’ Zion Williamson as Philadelphia visits New Orleans. The Sixers will be favored on the NBA odds but by how much depends on the injury status of the Pels’ Brandon Ingram.

Tobias Harris registered a team-high 31 points for Philly, while Joel Embiid added 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Ben Simmons added 24 points and 11 assists. Why Bet on Philadelphia? | 2021 NBA Expert Analysis
The Sixers got a big win in Boston on Tuesday, 106-96, to sweep the season series for the first time since the 2000-2001 season. It was a small bit of revenge for Philadelphia, which was swept by Boston in the first round of the playoffs last season. Philadelphia led by 21 in the second half of the opener of a four-game trip. It has won three of four overall.Joel Embiid hit 9-of-19 shots and made 16-of-20 from the free throw line, finishing with 35 points, six rebounds, one assist, one block and one 3-pointer in 33 minutes. The 20 free throw attempts are the most that he’s tallied in a game since January 20, when he had 21 in a win over the Celtics. In his two games back from the bone bruise in his left knee, Embiid has attempted a total of 37 free throws. The team is 26-7 this season when he plays.
Embiid said after Tuesday’s win regarding getting to the line: “It doesn’t matter who’s in front of me. As we’ve seen all season, it doesn’t really matter who has been in front of me. I just attack every single game I want to be aggressive. I want to get the other bigs in foul trouble, I want to get to the bonus early so now they’re going to stop playing physical. Even if they play physical I’m going to use that to my advantage to get the free-throw line.”
Danny Green was 5-for-6 from deep in the win for 17 points. Green has been one of the biggest beneficiaries since Joel Embiid made his return from a bone bruise in his left knee. In the two games that Embiid has played, Green has shot a combined 8-of-12 from beyond the arc, tallying 26 points. Green has at least two made three-pointers in 13 straight games.
Tobias Harris scored 10 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. Ben Simmons scored 12 points to go along with six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Simmons has at least one steal in each of his last 10 contests.
This will be the first time the Sixers have ever faced Pelicans star Zion Williamson.
Why Bet on New Orleans? | 2021 NBA Expert Analysis
The Pelicans lost their second in a row Wednesday, 139-111 in Brooklyn. In his return from a long injury absence, Nets star Kevin Durant came off the bench with about 7 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter and by the time the period ended the Nets had 79 points and a 20-point halftime lead. Brooklyn was a sizzling 14 for 18 (78%) in its 43-point quarter.“We got dominated at both ends of the floor. Totally dominated,” Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy said. “We couldn’t get out to the 3-point line. Our defense was absurd. They totally dominated us.”
Pels superstar Zion Williamson had just 16 on 4-for-12 shooting, ending his streak of 25 straight games with 20 points and 50% shooting. That tied Shaquille O’Neal for the longest such streak since 1954-55, when the shot clock debuted.
Eric Bledsoe was ejected from Wednesday’s blowout loss after collecting two technical fouls, finishing with 26 points and five rebounds in 29 minutes. Lonzo Ball also had an efficient outing, going 6-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the line for 15 points, three assists, one 3-pointer, one steal and one turnover in 28 minutes.
Jaxson Hayes (ankle) hit 5-of-7 shots for 11 points, six rebounds, one 3-pointer and one turnover in 24 minutes off the bench – he was in question after tweaking his ankle on Tuesday.
Pels second-leading scorer Brandon Ingram missed a fifth straight game with a sore right foot and is questionable Friday. Rookie point guard Kira Lewis Jr. missed a third in a row with a calf injury. Nickeil Alexander-Walker (left high ankle sprain) and Josh Hart (right thumb sprain) are both out a few weeks.
