Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Series: Friday, June 23 – Sunday, June 25, 2023

Friday’s Pitching Matchup

It’s quite an interesting pitching matchup on Friday, as the Houston Astros will send J.P. France to the mound. France has thrown just 47.1 innings and struck out 38 this season.

The 28-year-old is coming off an outing against the Reds, where he allowed just four hits and two runs over 5.2 innings against the Reds. His last three starts have seen him get into the 7th inning.

Emmet Sheehan will make his second start of his career on Friday. The 23-year-old from New York went six innings strong and did not allow a hit on June 16th against the Giants. In that game, he struck out three and walked two.

Saturday’s Affair Sees Two Newcomers As Well

Both teams will send another newcomer to the mound on Saturday. Houston is sending 29-year-old Ronel Blanco out for this start. Blanco is coming off a start where he allowed seven hits over 5.2 innings. The Astros are 1-2 in his three starts this season.

Bobby Miller gets the ball for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Miller is 3-1 on the season, with a 2.83 earned run average. Miller has struck out 28 batters over 28.2 innings this season. In his last start, Miller was not sharp, allowing seven hits and seven runs over 5.2 innings in a 15-0 loss to divisional rival San Francisco.

Sunday Night Baseball

The Sunday game will be the Sunday Night Baseball game of the week. The Houston Astros will send Hunter Brown to the mound. Brown is a 24-year-old right-hander from Detroit, Michigan.

Brown is 6-4 on the season and holds a 3.78 earned run average. He has struck out 90 batters this season in 81 innings while walking just 28. Brown is coming off an outing against the Mets, where he took the loss, allowing six runs over 5.2 innings.

The Los Angeles will go with veteran Tony Gonsolin in this affair. Gonsolin is a 29-year-old from Vacaville, California. He sits with a 4-2 record and a 2.92 earned run average.

Gonsolin has 43 strikeouts in 52.1 innings while walking just 21. He is also coming off a loss to the Giants, allowing all 7 of the Giants runs last Sunday.

Offense Plenty on Both Sides

The Houston Astros are World Series contenders for a reason. Over their last four wins, they are averaging more than six runs per game. During their recent five-game losing streak, the team scored less than three per game.

The Astros are anchored offensively by Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman, and Mauricio Duban. Alvarez is having a big season for the Astros, top 10 in home runs with 17 runs batted in with 55 and OPS with a .978.

The Dodgers, much like the Astros, are seeking consistency. Before winning back-to-back games against the Angeles, Los Angeles had lost four of their last five. During the losing streak, the Dodgers pitching game up 37 runs in four losses.

The last two games were both 2-0 wins for the Dodgers. Offensively, Freddie Freeman is the catalyst to the offense. This is especially true with leading homerun hitter Max Muncy out.

Freeman leads the team with a .323 batting average. The slugger hit his 14th home run of the season on Wednesday, this one-off Shohei Ohtani for the 2-0 win.

Great Series over Weekend

This has the expectations and the feeling of a great series. This is a potential World Series matchup. These teams have seen each other before and will not be surprised to see each other again.

Look for the Dodgers to look to set the tone with early runs at home on Friday. The pitching matchups do not really give either team an advantage, so it comes down to execution.
