Baltimore Orioles vs LA Angels: Odds & Insights for Tonight’s MLB Matchup

One of the big early surprises in the American League this season has been Angels lefty Reid Detmers as he has looked like a Cy Young candidate. This from a guy who was 4-10 last year with 4.48 ERA. We think Detmers is going to come crashing back to earth very soon, perhaps as soon as Monday vs. Baltimore

Why Bet on Baltimore Orioles?

Pretty funny moment for Orioles closer Craig Kimbrell on Saturday in Kansas City. He nailed down his 422nd career save at the end of the Orioles’ 9-7 win to tie legendary closer Billy Wagner for seventh on the all-time saves list, so it was an important baseball. That ball landed in teammate Colton Cowser’s glove for the third out, and what did he do with it?

He threw it behind him and it landed in the fountain at Kauffman Stadium. There’s no video of the ball after it left Cowser’s glove, but there is video of Cowser throwing the ball behind him with reckless abandon. Cowser, who entered as a replacement when Austin Hays’ calf tightened, had caught Salvador Perez’s fly in front of the warning track. When Cowser realized what he had done, he ran back onto the field and searched. “There were two balls in the fountains, and the other one was really old,” he said.

Kimbrel, 35, has five saves in six chances this season, and the nine-time All-Star has allowed just one run in nine innings.

Baltimore leads the AL and ranks second in MLB with a 90.3 mph average exit velocity, per Statcast. Gunnar Henderson leads all hitters with a 96.8 mph average exit velo. Eight of the Orioles’ wins this season have been in comeback fashion, the second-most in MLB behind Atlanta. The Orioles have gone 98 consecutive regular-season series of at least two decisions (no ties) without being swept. That is Stat cast the fourth-longest regular-season streak in MLB history, trailing the 1942-44 St. Louis Cardinals (124), 1906-09 Chicago Cubs (115), and 1903-05 New York Giants (105).

It’s righty Albert Suarez on the hill Monday. Suárez inked a minor league deal with the Orioles in the offseason and showed promise in spring camp where he posted a 5.17 ERA, 1.21 WHIP with an impressive 19/2 K/BB ratio across 15 2/3 innings. Suarez tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Twins in his return to the majors last Wednesday. Suarez struck out four and walked none while throwing just 75 pitches. He had a 5.87 ERA in his three outings in Triple-A, but he was also very efficient there, posting a 17/1 K/BB ratio in 15 1/3 innings. It looks like he should be a capable stopgap starter for the Orioles with Kyle Bradish and John Means on rehab assignments.

Before last Wednesday, Suarez hadn’t pitched in MLB since September 26, 2017 (2,395 days). He became the first Orioles pitcher to toss 5.2 or more scoreless innings in his team debut since Jeremy Hellickson worked 7.0 scoreless frames vs. Kansas City on August 2, 2017. Suarez went 4-7 with a 3.92 ERA (47 ER/108.0 IP) in 19 starts with the Korean Baseball Organization’s Samsung Lions in 2023.

The Orioles lead the season series 2-1 after taking the opening series of the regular season vs. LA. The O’s won the first two games of the regular season by a combined total of 24-7, before Halos picked up their first win of the year by a 4-1 score at Camden Yards on March 31.

Why Bet on Los Angeles Angels?

What was the worst contract given out in MLB history? It very well might have been in December 2019 when the Angels signed former Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon to a seven-year, $245 million free-agent deal. It included a full no-trade clause and no opt-out clauses. Rendon was an excellent player in the 2019 season with Washington and led the franchise to its first World Series title, but he has been an injury-plagued mega-bust with the Angels and is on the injured list again.

Rendon, who has been swinging a hot bat after a slow start to the year, hit a grounder to Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz on Saturday and beat out the throw for an infield single but injured his left hamstring while running to first base. Head athletic trainer Mike Frostad and manager Ron Washington met him at first base and he was removed for pinch-runner Zach Neto. A day later, Rendon was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, and veteran infielder Ehire Adrianza was selected from Triple-A Salt Lake.

It’s unclear how much time Rendon will miss but it’s a blow for the Angels, especially considering how well he was doing at getting on base as the club’s leadoff hitter. He’ll be further evaluated by team doctors on Monday when the club returns to Anaheim. The 33-year-old was 0-for-19 through his first five games but batted .357/.413/.411 (20-for-56) with three doubles and three RBIs over his last 14 games, including his infield single on Saturday. The power is not there — Rendon has hit 13 home runs in over 700 plate appearances since 2021 — but he was hitting for average and getting on base of late.

“[I’m feeling] not too great,” Rendon said. “Frustration. Anger. Mad. Any of those adjectives you want to use. I think that’s one of the most frustrating parts, right? I’m starting to barrel the ball more, and when I didn’t I was just starting to find holes. Like earlier in the season, I was barreling it and they were catching it. I think that’s the most frustrating part, I was getting into a groove and of course this happens.”

It’s ace lefty Reid Detmers on the mound – well, he wasn’t expected to be the 2024 ace but has been so far at 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA. Detmers didn’t factor into the decision last Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against the Rays. He struck out four. Although Detmers didn’t reach seven strikeouts for the first time all season, he’s now surrendered one earned run or zero in four straight outings. After seeing his K/9 jump up to 10.2 in 2023, Detmers has taken another step forward in that category with an 11.9 K/9 through 22.2 innings.

Detmers is the third pitcher in Angels history to pitch 5.0+ innings and allow one-or-fewer earned runs in each of his first four games of season, joining Kirk McCaskill (1990) and Chuck Finley (1998). Detmers He ranks second in the American League in strikeouts with 30 and is sixth in ERA.

“They’ve been good so far,” Detmers said of his starts this season. “I’m just going out there and competing, that’s the main thing. I’m not trying to do too much, using what I have and trying to get a ‘W.’”

Why Bet on Baltimore?

The Orioles won two of three over the weekend at Arizona to start their road trip. Danny Coulombe (5-1) struck out one over 1.1 perfect innings to earn the win Sunday. The finale was tied at 4 heading to the sixth, when the O’s used a four-run rally to move ahead for good. The Orioles (85-51) remained 2 1/2 games up in the American League East over the second-place Rays (83-54).

Jack Flaherty started to fade in the fifth inning, but Coulombe was able to step in and steady things for the Orioles. They rallied ahead in the sixth, allowing Coulombe to pick up his second win in as many outings. The southpaw has an 8.1-inning scoreless streak going, during which he’s posted an 11:2 K:BB with a save and four holds. He’s at a 2.51 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 52:10 K:BB over 43 innings this season.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters that they are waiting for Felix Bautista’s elbow inflammation to go down before making a decision on the next step. Bautista has had an MRI done, but more testing could be in the works soon. It sounds more and more likely that the league’s best closer isn’t going to return to the mound this season.

It’s right hander Grayson Rodriguez on the mound Monday. Rodriguez (4-3) earned the win last Monday, allowing one hit and one walk over six scoreless innings against the White Sox. He struck out six in the best performance of his rookie season. The 23-year-old Rodriguez hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start since July 17 — he’s worked to a 2.32 ERA over his last seven outings (42.2 innings). Overall, Rodriguez’s ERA sits at 5.03 with a 1.35 WHIP and 97:35 K:BB across 18 starts (93 innings) this season.

Rodriguez was dealt the loss in his only career outing against the Angels on May 15 at Oriole Park. He allowed eight runs on a career-high nine hits (2 HR) with three punchouts and three walks in 3.1 innings. He left with a runner on, who later scored. Rodriguez threw 79 pitches, 47 for strikes.

The Orioles have gone 83 consecutive series of at least two decisions (no ties) without being swept. That is tied for the fourth-longest streak in MLB history with the 1922-24 New York Yankees and trailing the 1942-44 St. Louis Cardinals (124), 1906-09 Chicago Cubs (115), and 1903-05 New York Giants (105). The Birds have not been swept in a series of at least two games since May 13-15, 2022 at Detroit (0-3), and not at home in a series of at least two games since August 27-29, 2021 vs. Tampa Bay (0-3).

Baltimore is 43-25 away from Camden Yards this season, the best road record in the AL and second-best in MLB, behind Atlanta.

Why Bet on Los Angeles?

A terrible season for the Angels hit rock bottom over the weekend when they were swept three games in Oakland. The A’s scored six runs in the seventh to rally for a 10-6 win. Luis Rengifo, who had an RBI single in the ninth, extended his career-high hitting streak to 11 games. Earlier in the day, Angels catcher Max Stassi announced he will miss the entire 2023 season because of a serious family medical issue. Stassi was initially placed on the 15-day injured list after suffering a hip injury late in spring training before he was transferred to the 60-day IL in June.

Nolan Schanuel has reached base safely in each of his first 12 MLB games. He set a franchise record with a 10-game hit streak to begin his MLB career, before having the streak snapped Friday night. Schanuel made his MLB Debut on Aug. 18 vs. Tampa Bay, just 40 days after being selected in the first round (11th overall) by the Angels in the 2023 Draft from Florida Atlantic University. He joined LHP Brian Anderson (1993) and DH Danny Goodwin (1975) as the only Halos to debut in their draft year.

With 44 home runs and 20 stolen bases on the season, Shohei Ohtani is one HR shy of his second career season with 45+ HR and 20+ SB (Ohtani had 46 HR & 26 SB in 2021). He would join Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez as the only players with multiple 45 HR/20 SB seasons.

It’s lefty Kenny Rosenberg (0-0, 6.43) on the mound in what will be his third Major League appearance (first start) of the season and second home outing of the year. He was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake last week . Rosenberg’s only previous Major League start came on June 19, 2022 at Seattle (ND; 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 SO).

He pitched 2.0 innings in relief in last outing on Aug. 23 (Game 1) vs. Cincinnati and allowed one earned run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. In 20 games (all starts) with Triple-A Salt Lake this season, he is 7-7 with a 4.95 ERA (100 IP – 55 ER) and 120 strikeouts. He has never faced Baltimore.

The season series vs. Orioles is tied 2-2 following a four-game series at Camden Yards from May 15-18.
