The calendar turns to September next week, which means it’s just a matter of time before the Astros and Dodgers clinch their respective divisions. The Braves and Mets look like they’ll battle it out for the entire last month of the season, and the AL Central continues to be a polite game of “no, you take the division I insist” between the Guardians, Twins, and White Sox.
The Yankees still have a comfortable lead in the AL East, and the Cardinals are starting to pull away in the Central, but the expanded wild card race appears like it will be a doozy on the home stretch. Let’s see how some of the big weekend games have an effect on the standings so you can place your bets against their MLB Odds.
Winning Straight-Up Picks for the Top 2022 MLB Weekend Matches
Angels at Blue Jays, Friday 7:07 PM ET
Toronto is on a three-game win streak and has won 7 of their last ten, yet they still can’t make up any ground in the AL East with the Yankees and Rays combining to win their last 10. This is a somewhat risky play since Blue Jays starter Mitch White hasn’t pitched out of the fifth inning in any of his three starts since joining the team, but the Angels losing 9 of their last 10 is the equalizer.
Diamondbacks at White Sox, Friday 8:10 PM ET
Chicago returns home after a 2-4 road trip and fans in the Windy City are getting antsy with this underachieving team. The White Sox are still just four games back from the division lead but this weekend is not just a must-win, it’s a must-sweep. Johnny Cueto has been a revelation for the South Siders as he should tally his 11th straight quality start in the series opener.
Rockies at Mets, Saturday 7:10 PM ET
There could be some better value on the Mets on Saturday due to them calling up David Peterson from the minors to make the start. He was sent to Triple-A on June 30th after starting a 20-2 New York loss to the Braves, but Colorado is just 14-39 in their last 53 road games heading into the series opener.
Cubs at Brewers, Saturday 7:10 PM ET
In a surprise play, it looks like it’s the Cubs who have a great chance at pulling off the upset here. Milwaukee is fading down the stretch going just 8-13 in August, and they have a 7-9 record vs. Chicago this season. Drew Smyly has pitched well for the Cubs with three total ER allowed over his last four starts, while Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff has an 8.68 ERA in two starts against Chicago in 2022.
Dodgers at Marlins, Sunday 12:05 PM ET
It’s another upset special when the Dodgers set their alarms for the 12:05 PM ET start after a Saturday night in South Beach. This game will probably have a total of 6.5 or lower as the Marlins’ Edward Cabrera hasn’t allowed a run in four August starts, and he’s up against Julio Urias.
