The Chicago White Sox make their only visit to Yankee Stadium starting Tuesday night and might catch a major break in that record-setting reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge might not play in the opener (or longer) with a toe injury. Needless to say, his potential absence would affect the MLB odds in a big way.

Why Bet on Chicago?
The White Sox and Yankees play six times this season: three games each at Yankee Stadium in this series and in Chicago (8/7-9). The Sox went 3-4 last season, losing three of four at Guaranteed Rate Field and winning three of four in New York.
Starting Tuesday, the White Sox will play seven consecutive series (22 games) from 6/6-29 vs. teams at or above .500. The stretch of games includes 13 on the road at the Yankees, Dodgers, Seattle and the Angels and nine vs. Miami, Texas and Boston at Guaranteed Rate Field. Chicago this season is 11-21 vs. teams with a record at or above .500 at the time of the game.
The White Sox are playing arguably their best ball of the season, sweeping a three-game home set vs. Detroit over the weekend now that the team is pretty healthy. Jake Burger hit a game-winning, walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday. It was Burger’s 12th homer in 145 plate appearances this season. He didn’t start any of the White Sox’s previous three games.
Eloy Jimenez has a hit in 14 of his last 15 games, batting .367/.409/.567 (22-60) with three home runs, 15 RBI and 11 runs scored. Luis Robert Jr. leads the team with 16 multihit games. Andrew Vaughn ranks among MLB RISP leaders in slugging pct. (2nd), OPS (5th, 1.319), RBI (T5th), and average (11th). Vaughn is tied for second in MLB with seven GW RBI, trailing Aaron Judge (nine), and tied for third with 13 go-ahead RBI.
Liam Hendriks (1-0) worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two. It was the third big league appearance for the All-Star closer since he missed the start of the season after he was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He averaged 96.3 mph with his fastball, which is a little step up from 95.6 mph in his first two appearances. Hendriks’ win coincided with National Cancer Survivors Day in the United States.
It’s Lucas Giolito (4-4, 4.08) on the mound Tuesday. Giolito lost control against the Tigers last Thursday, walking seven in 3 2/3rd innings and allowing four runs. He walked three batters in the third inning — one on a pitch clock violation — but was bailed out by a soft lineout double play. In the fourth he walked two more after an Akil Baddoo solo shot, and he did not escape that as easily after Javier Baez hit a two-run single and Spencer Torkelson chased him with another RBI single. His previous season-high for walks in a game was three, and his WHIP is now up to 1.26.
Giolito is 2-2 with a 6.30 ERA in four career starts spanning 20 innings against New York. He got the win in his only career start at Yankee Stadium on April 12, 2019, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with six strikeouts over 5.0 IP.

Why Bet on New York?
The Yankees’ 36-25 record is good for third place in the East, though it would have them in first place in three of the five other divisions.
Will reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge play Tuesday? He ran through a gate at Dodger Stadium making a great catch on Saturday and injured his toe, sitting out Sunday’s 4-1 upset win. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Judge’s right foot, mostly in the area of his big toe, was too sore to play. Judge said after Sunday’s game that not playing “was a little precautionary” and added that he’s “a little sore.”
Judge said on Sunday that there was a chance he could be placed on the injured list when the Yankees start a six-game homestand on Tuesday. Through 49 games this season, Judge is hitting .291/.404/.674 (193 OPS+) with 19 homers, 40 RBI and 42 runs scored.
The Yankees’ captain has five homers in his last six games and 13 in his past 19. That latter number matches the third-most by a Yankee in a 19-game span in a single season in franchise history, trailing only Alex Rodriguez (14 HR in 19G from 4/2-24/07) and Babe Ruth (14H in 19G from 5/18-6/7/30). The Yankees have gone 158-50 in Judge’s career when he homers and 14-1 this year.
“If I’m on it, I’m on it,” Judge said of the IL. “But I’m trying not to be, you know? Who knows? I’ve got no answer yet. We’ll take it day to day right now.”
The Yankees are planning to place left-handed starting pitcher Nestor Cortes on the injured list due to an issue with his throwing shoulder. Tuesday was supposed to be Cortes’ turn in the rotation and the team hopes he’ll only miss a start or two.
Right-hander Clarke Schmidt will make his 13th start of the season on Tuesday. The 27-year-old will start on an extended five days’ rest due to team off-days on Thursday and Monday. He most recently pitched last Wednesday at Seattle, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings without recording a decision. It marked his first career scoreless start. Schmidt has tossed at least 5.0 innings in six of his last eight starts after not doing so in his first four starts this season.
Schmidt has thrown only 2.2 career innings vs. the White Sox, not allowing a run.
