It’s the first of a home-and-home set over a less-than-48-hour span between the Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers with the 17-1 Cavs as heavy home favorites on the NBA odds in Week 6.
They meet again Black Friday afternoon in Atlanta.
Opening Lines Subject to Change: Cavs -11 (total 240.5) Expert Prediction: Cavaliers 122, Hawks 110 |
Atlanta Hawks +416
The Hawks were well-rested and facing a Dallas team in the second of a back-to-back and down a few starters on Monday but Atlanta still couldn’t capitalize at home in a 129-119 defeat, the team’s third straight loss. Kyrie Irving had just 10 points at halftime after being stifled by Hawks guard Dyson Daniels but heated up in the second half, including a stretch where he hit five consecutive field goals.
Kyrie Irving
Irving scored 14 points in a three-minute stretch in the fourth quarter, during which the Mavs went from trailing 104-103 to leading 118-109. He finished with 32 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Luka Doncic sat out injured again.
Trae Young
Young had 18 points and 16 assists in a losing effort and has reached double figures in assists in four straight games and in all but four times in 17 games this season. Young has experienced a decrease in his scoring figures now that Jalen Johnson is operating as the No. 1 option on the offensive side of the ball, with his 21.9 PPG figure being the lowest since his rookie year. However, Young is averaging a career-high in assists (11.9) and steals per contest (1.5).
Jalen Johnson
Johnson had 28 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Averaging a double-double for the season, Johnson has recorded one in three straight and five of his last six games. Johnson, who owns 10 double-doubles this season (30 career), has six outings with at least 20 points and 10 boards, the third-most such games by an Eastern Conference player this season: Giannis Antetokounmpo (14), Karl-Anthony Towns (11).
Johnson is averaging career highs of 19.9 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks in 36.5 minutes, on pace to become the fifth-youngest player to average at least 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a single season, joining Oscar Robertson (2x), Bam Adebayo and Nikola Jokic.

The Assists Record
The Hawks had 32 assists vs. Dallas, their NBA-leading 10th outing of 30-or-more assists this year. Atlanta is an Eastern Conference-leading 29.2 assists per game (fourth in the NBA). The team also had 10 steals on Monday, its 12th double-digit theft outing of the season, tied with Oklahoma City for the most such games in the NBA this season.
Through their first 18 games, the Hawks have swiped 184 total steals, the second-most total steals in the league and their most total steals through the first 18 games of a season since the 1993-94 campaign (200). Dyson Daniels (3.13, 1st), Johnson (1.47, tied 20th) and Trae Young (1.47, tied 20th) all rank in the top 20 in steals per game. Atlanta is one of only two teams to have at least three players all rank top 20 in steals per game this season, joining the Thunder (four players).
Dyson Daniels
Daniels has swiped an NBA-leading 50 steals this season, to go along with 16 blocks, becoming the first player since Michael Jordan (1988-89) to register at least 50 steals and 15 blocks through the first 16 games of a season. The 6-7 guard owns 66 stocks this season (steals + blocks), the second-most in the NBA, trailing only Victor Wembanyama (69).
Reserve Bogdan Bogdanovic enters Wednesday’s tilt having buried at least one triple in 95 straight games, tied with Klay Thompson for the sixth-longest such streak in NBA history.
^Cleveland Cavaliers -588
Since its only loss of the season on Nov. 19 in Boston, the Cavs have easily won back-to-back games and are off a 122-108 home win over a bad Toronto team on Sunday to improve to 10-0 at home for the first since the 2017-18 season, when they won their first 13 games at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. With the Raptors only down six points entering the fourth, Donovan Mitchell scored seven straight and Ty Jerome dropped a 3-pointer from the extended right elbow in a 10-1 burst to put the Cavs in full control.
The @cavs are the 9th team in NBA history to start the season at least 17-1:
— NBA History (@NBAHistory) November 25, 2024

2015-16 Warriors: 18-0

1993-94 Rockets: 17-1
1990-91 Trail Blazers: 17-1

Donovan Mitchell
Mitchell needed a bounce-back performance after recording a season-low 10 points in the win over the Pelicans on Nov. 20 and he accomplished that with 26 points, tying Jerome for team-high honors. Mitchell has been his usual productive self this season, averaging 24.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game since the beginning of November.
Scored Points
All five starters plus Jerome notched double-figures for the Cavs. Both starting big men doubled-up – with Jarrett Allen finishing with 23 points and 13 boards and Evan Mobley added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Allen tallied his 6th straight double-double and in that span is averaging 17.5 points and 12.0 boards per, shooting 77 percent from the floor and 81 percent from the stripe.
Darius Garland
Garland chipped in with 16 points, going 4-for-7 from deep, to go with six assists and Isaac Okoro returned from a two-game absence to notch 10 points, connecting on all four field goal attempts, adding six boards, four assists, a steal and a block.
Ty Jerome
Jerome is playing the best ball of his career right now. His most games with 20-plus points in a season was three – (with OKC in 2020-21). On Sunday night, Jerome tallied his third 20-point game in his last four outings – averaging 22.3 points and 5.0 assists over that stretch, shooting .604 from the floor, .556 from beyond the arc and a perfect 10-of-10 from the stripe. Jerome’s field goal percentage this season is tops among all NBA guards and ranks him 10th overall in the league. His .551 shooting percentage from long-range ranks him 3rd, behind only Charlotte’s Josh Green and Denver’s Nikola Jokic.
“I just keep doing my job, and that’s just reading the game,” said Jerome. “And if I have space I’m going to shoot it. I think just think the more guys you have on court that are aggressive, it gives Donovan space, it gives Darius space, it gives Evan space. We’re putting four or five guys out there that are all aggressive, and it’s like, what’s the defense going to do?”
First-year Cleveland head coach Kenny Atkinson previously served as an assistant coach with the Hawks for four seasons (2012-16), helping lead the 60-win Hawks to the 2014-15 Eastern Conference Finals.

2022 Heat vs Hawks or Cavaliers, Playoffs Game 1
The Miami Heat must wait for Friday’s Atlanta versus Cleveland game to produce an 8-seed. But although the 1-seed Heat must wait a day to find out which team they will face on Sunday, we can still handicap the game. Will the Heat, which should go off the favorite versus either Cleveland or Atlanta, cover the spread in Game 1? Check out an NBA Playoffs Betting analysis of the Hawks, Cavaliers, and Heat and a prediction no matter which team ends up playing Miami at FTX Arena.

Why the Atlanta Hawks can beat the Miami Heat
Trae Young and Clint Capela have developed an excellent rapport. Young averages 28.4 points and 9.7 assists per. Capela averages 11.1 points and close to 12 boards each game.
When Young and Capela are playing their best, few teams can hang with the Hawks. Not only that, but Atlanta had a win over Miami this season.
Why the Cleveland Cavaliers can beat the Miami Heat
Cleveland ranks fifth in points allowed per game. Opponents average just 105.7 per against the Cavaliers.
Also, Darius Garland has become one of the top scoring point guards in the NBA. Garland averages close to 22 points per while grabbing 3.3 rebounds each game and dishing 8.6 assists.
Why the Miami Heat will win Game 1 versus the Hawks or the Cavs
Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Kyle Lowry had plenty of chances to lose down the stretch and yield the 1-seed. But Miami didn’t.
The Heat held off the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, and Philadelphia 76ers to grab the top seed. Miami marched to the top of the East early in the season. Then, they never gave up their lead, which proves they’re the best team in the conference.

Miami Heat versus Atlanta or Cleveland Final Betting Analysis
If Butler and his crew face Cleveland, expect Miami to win via a blowout. The Cavaliers aren’t good enough to hang with the Heat.
If the Heat must play the Hawks, it will be tougher to cover the spread, but Miami beat the Hawks in 3-of-4. Not only did Miami win 3-of-4, but the Heat covered in 3-of-4.
One thing that could throw a wrench into the plans is Bam Adebayo is out due to an illness. Adebayo scored 24 points in the win against the Hawks on April 8.
Bam shouldn’t make it back for this game, which means the Heat must find 20 points if they end up facing Trae Young and the Hawks. Miami can do it, but it won’t be easy.
More importantly, if Miami faces the Hawks, they’ll end up facing one of the hottest squads in the NBA. The ATL went 7-3 ATS in their final 10 regular season games.
Earlier this week, Atlanta blasted Charlotte 132-103. Young, Capela, and the rest of the Hawks are playing great.
Give the ATL the nod to cover if they end up stepping into FTX Arena. If Game 1 is a battle between Cleveland anhd Miami, even without Adebayo, South Beach should win and cover.
