It’s a spectacular individual matchup of all-world centers on Monday night when former NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs visit former league MVP Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers, who are favored on the NBA odds.

San Antonio Spurs Analysis
The Spurs won their second game in a row Saturday, 114-94 over Portland, their largest margin of victory this season. San Antonio is 15-13 after winning two straight and four of five. The Spurs did not win their 15th game last season until March 17.

Victor Wembanyama
Wembanyama was amazing with 30 points, 10 blocks and seven rebounds. Wemby became the sixth player in NBA history — and the youngest — to record at least 30 points and 10 blocks in a game. He also became the first player with four 3-pointers and 10 blocks in a game in NBA history. In just his second season and at age 20, Wembanyama continues to add to his list of unique accomplishments. His 10-block game comes during a season in which he also had a 50-point game and a 5×5 game. He is just the third player since the league began keeping track of blocks in 1974 to do all three in the same season, joining David Robinson in the 1992-93 season and Hakeem Olajuwon in 1989-90.
Saturday’s performance marked just the 12th game in which a player had 30 points and 10 blocks since 1974, but Wembanyama is the first to do it in 30 or fewer minutes played. He now has two career 10-block games — he also did it in his rookie season against Toronto — and he is the first player under 21 with multiple games with double-figure blocks since 1974.
The former Rookie of the Year is going through his most productive stretch of the season, as he was coming off a 42-point effort in the overtime win over the Hawks on Thursday. Wembanyama has scored at least 20 points in five straight games since returning from a two-game absence due to a back problem earlier this month. Over that stretch, he is averaging 29.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 5.2 blocks per contest. Wembanyama has now blocked a shot in 62 straight games, setting a new Spurs franchise record.
Charles Bassey
Bassey amassed 16 points and 12 rebounds in the win. With Zach Collins sidelined by injury, Bassey has seen his minutes go up. It was his second double-double of the year. Devin Vassell racked up 11 points and four rebounds. He has shot a combined 14-for-26 from the field, including 5-for-11 from deep, in his first two starts of the campaign coming in the past two games.
Stephon Castle
Guard Castle is ranked in six of the five rookie categories, including scoring, assists, steals and minutes per game. He also ranks ninth in blocks per game and is 10th in free throw percentage among rookies. The Spurs are averaging 13.8 three-point made field goals for the highest single-season average in team history.
Gregg Popovich
San Antonio remains without Hall of Fame coach Popovich as he recovers from a stroke. Popovich is the oldest coach in NBA history at 75 years old. In 2020, he surpassed the previous mark held by Hubie Brown as a 71-year-old in his final game as Memphis’ head coach. Popovich is the NBA’s career leader with 1,390 victories and another 170 postseason wins while winning five NBA titles. Assistant Mitch Johnson is the acting coach. Here’s what he said about Wemby’s recent stretch:
“I think he’s (Wembanyama) been more forceful. He’s been a little bit more patient when he catches the ball, especially when he’s not being guarded by the traditional five-man size. I think he’s done a good job of just facing up and seeing when he has that one-on-one space to continue to push through that initial contact.”
^Philadelphia 76ers Analysis
The 76ers are 4-2 in their last six games, despite losing to the NBA-best Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday, 126-99. Philadelphia center Joel Embiid, who has a sinus fracture and knee soreness, did not play the second game of a back-to-back set. The former MVP scored 34 points Friday in a win over Charlotte.
Tyrese Maxey
Maxey had 27 points to lead Philly. Maxey was sharp from beyond the arc and drained at least three trays for the fifth consecutive game. However, he went 3-for-12 in two-point shots. Maxey has scored at least 22 points in five straight contests and Saturday marked the 36th game of Maxey’s career with at least five made threes, which are tied for the most in franchise history with Robert Covington.

— Philadelphia 76ers (@sixers) December 22, 2024
Over his past five, Maxey is averaging 27.4 points (8th in NBA), 4.8 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Since Dec. 8, Maxey is one of five players in the league averaging at least 25 points, five assists, and one and a half steals, joining Luka Dončić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Devin Booker.
Paul George
George only had 11 points on 4-for-12 shooting and 1-for-4 shooting from deep on the night. That was after the 9-time All-Star only had five points and shot 2-for-12 against the Hornets on Friday. George is the definition of a rhythm player as the ball needs to be moving, and he needs to get his scoring going within the offense before he really takes over.
Nick Nurse
“He didn’t have a ton of great opportunities tonight,” coach Nick Nurse told reporters after the loss. “He only had probably one or two kind of really rhythm shots. Everything else, he had to kind of create on his own, right? And they were doing a good job of switching length out onto him. When we got the size match up, he did OK there early in the game. He had a couple stretches there and then, and then, when the size flipped the other direction, he didn’t, didn’t get a lot of great looks.”
Ricky Council IV
Council IV scored 11 points and hauled in five rebounds, marking his third game with at least 10 points across his last four appearances. Council IV is averaging 10.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in these four games. However, Council is iffy for this one.
Nurse said he felt comfortable with his rotation until rookie shooting guard Jared McCain underwent knee surgery last Tuesday. McCain, 20, has been arguably the top rookie in this year’s class, averaging 15.3 points — tops among rookies — while shooting 46% from the field and 38.3% from 3-point range. He also leads all rookies in 3-pointers made (51) and has scored at least 25 points in four games. But he is out several weeks now. “When you lose McCain, all those plans go right out the window,” Nurse said.
Joel Embiid
Embiid isn’t listed on the injury report Monday. The big man has appeared in only three games during December, during which he has averaged 25.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.3 blocks across 27.0 minutes per contest. Last Friday marked only the seventh game this season for Embiid, who has been plagued by a sore knee and that sinus fracture. With him playing Monday, Andre Drummond will return to a reserve role, and Guerschon Yabusele will lose out on some minutes.
^Spurs vs 76ers Series History
It’s the first of two meetings this season. Last year, the Sixers won both. It was 133-123 in Philly behind a franchise-record 70 points from Joel Embiid. He was 24 of 41 from the field, including 1 of 2 from 3-point range, and made 21 of 23 free throws. Embiid, who also had 18 rebounds, broke Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers record of 68 points, set on Dec. 16, 1967, with a layup with 1:41 to play. Then-rookie Victor Wembanyama had 33 points and seven rebounds in 29 minutes for the Spurs in the first matchup between the 7-footers. The Sixers have won the past four at home in the series.
