Heat vs 76ers Season Series

The teams met four times this regular season and split. They most recently played on April 4 in Miami and the Sixers prevailed 109-105. Tyrese Maxey scored 37 points and Joel Embiid added 29. There were several big runs by both teams but Philly ended it on a 15-3 run. The Heat went on a 17-0 run midway through the second half, and led by eight with 6:28 left. Terry Rozier scored 22 points for Miami and Jimmy Butler had 20.

Why Bet on Miami Heat?

The Heat closed the regular season with an easy 118-103 home win over a bad Toronto team on Sunday. It was tied after one quarter and the intrigue didn’t last much longer. Miami outscored Toronto 43-22 in the second to build a 67-46 halftime lead. The 21-point margin in the second quarter was Miami’s second-biggest of any period this season.

Tyler Herro was excellent with 17 points, eight assists and six boards. He has made at least one three-pointer in a career-high 34 straight games. Bam Adebayo accumulated 17 points and six rebounds. Adebayo only logged 19 minutes, as the Heat wanted to rest him for the Play-In Tournament matchup. Adebayo posted 39 appearances with at least 20 points while recording 42 double-doubles in the regular season.

Miami played without injured guards Duncan Robinson and Terry Rozier, while big man Kevin Love left early. Rozier missed his fourth straight game while dealing with neck spasms but should play Wednesday. Robinson missed a third straight game with a back injury but is likely for Wednesday. The Heat were 11-0 this season when Robinson scored at least 20 points. Love should be fine for Wednesday as he suffered an arm contusion.

Jimmy Butler finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. He scored in double-figures in every game this season except two. Here’s what he said about Wednesday: “We’ve just got to go out there and compete, play basketball the right way and do something very difficult — which is to win on Philly’s floor. But it’s the time of the year where you’ll have to do that anyways if you want to win a championship. Obviously, we’ll have to do it if we want to get to 7.”

Miami was 13-1 when holding opponents to under 100 points this season. The Heat made 1,022 three-point field goals, just the second time Miami has hit the 1,000-made mark, joining only their team-best 1,114 made in 2021-22. The Heat recorded 24 road wins this season, marking the seventh time in team history they have recorded at least 24 road wins, including just the second time in the last 10 seasons. Their 24 road wins were the second-most in the Eastern Conference.

The Heat are a physical and relentless team that plays under one of the league’s all-time best coaches in Erik Spoelstra. Miami has won seven of the last 12 overall against the Sixers, including three of the last four in Philadelphia.

Why Bet on Philadelphia 76ers?

Philadelphia won its eighth straight game to close the regular season on Sunday, 107-86 over Brooklyn even though star center Joel Embiid sat out. If he hadn’t missed a chunk of games earlier this season, no way the Sixers are in the play-in tournament. Even with seeding that could have reached as high as fifth in the Eastern Conference at stake, the Sixers rested Embiid only as a precaution, the team said.

Embiid’s tweaked knee on Friday was the latest injury setback in a career riddled with them. The 2023 MVP finished the season averaging 34.7 points and 11 rebounds in just 39 games. He had the statistical oddity of scoring more points than minutes played, finishing with 1,353 points in 1,309 minutes. Embiid practiced in full Monday.

Philly is 31-8 with Embiid in the lineup and 15-27 when he is out this season. For a variety of reasons, including health, Embiid has never been able to replicate his regular-season success in the playoffs, and Philadelphia has yet to advance past the conference semifinals with him on the roster.

Tyrese Maxey finished with 26 points in 29 minutes Sunday. Maxey finished his breakout fourth NBA season with 25.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 1.0 steals and 3.0 triples across 70 games. Those statistical contributions are all career highs.

Fellow guard De’Anthony Melton returned from a 21-game absence back on April 10, but proceeded to sit out the season finale. He didn’t practice on Monday but seems likely for Wednesday. His guard’s second season with the Sixers has been derailed by a recurring lumbar spine injury.

“I don’t want to say either way,” Coach Nick Nurse said of Melton, “but I would imagine two things: 1. He has probably a bit of a journey to get there for Wednesday. Some things have got to go well. And 2. He hasn’t played much. So it’s not time to be working guys back into the fold, right? But as a series goes on — if we’re fortunate enough to get into one — and as time goes on, you never know.”

The loser of the Miami-Philadelphia game will play host to either Atlanta or Chicago on Friday to determine the No. 8 seed and who’ll face No. 1 seed Boston in Round 1. The winner secures the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference and gets a playoff series against the second-seeded New York Knicks.

Last season, the Heat went from a team that suffered an opening-round play-in loss to representing the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. They would lose to the Denver Nuggets in five games in the Finals.

“We have to win Wednesday,” Nico Batum said of what will be the Sixers’ first of two chances to secure a playoff berth. “It’s a tricky situation. We are playing a very good team. They have been here before. Last year, they showed that you can be a play-in team and go all the way, pretty much close to. So they’re going to be a team that’s been there.”
