We are a couple of months into the new season, and it is already clear which teams are likely to be contenders, and which are probably going to struggle to get anywhere near the playoffs.
There are some surprises to be found there, with the teams at the top of the divisions right now not seen as being particularly surprising.
Analysis of the NHL Must Bet Games Week 8
There are some who are off to a slower start, but with a season as long as we get in the NHL, there is definitely time for those teams to start building a head of steam.
We are, as always, taking it one week at a time, which means that it’s time to look ahead at the next few days to find the best games on the schedule.
Let’s get right to it.
^Washington Capitals at Florida Panthers
Monday, November 25, 2024, 7:00 PM, ESPN+
There was some bad news for the Washington Capitals this weekend, with news that the seemingly ageless Alexander Ovechkin is going to be out for a while with an injury. That is a hole that is going to be tough to fill, and you wonder if the Capitals will be able to maintain their current form with their main man out of the lineup.
Things have cooled off for the Panthers, too, as the defending Stanley Cup champions are now on a 3-game losing skid, which has cost them their spot at the top of the Atlantic Division. It’s not what you would call panic time for either team, but both will be looking to get on a positive run.
^Vancouver Canucks at Boston Bruins
Tuesday, November 26, 2024, 7:00 PM, ESPN+
While it has been something of an up and own start to the season for the Vancouver Canucks, they are still very much within reach of the top spot in the Pacific Division. They are currently sitting on 23 points, which has them 5 games behind Vegas for the top spot, but the Canucks have played 2 games fewer than the Golden Knights.
It’s a very similar story for the Bruins, who are 4th in the Atlantic Division and just 3 points out of the lead. Boston has won their last 2 games and are 6-4-2 in their own building this season.
^Winnipeg Jets at LA Kings
Wednesday, November 27, 2024, 10:00 PM, ESPN+
There are no games on the schedule on Thursday due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but the good news is that we get a full slate of games to choose from on Wednesday. There are a number of games we could have focused on here, but I find this one to be the pick of the bunch.
Winnipeg has come storming out of the gate, scoring goals for fun and racing to the top of the Central Division, where they currently have a 4-point lead. The Kings are right in the tight pack of teams at the top of the Pacific Division, but at 4-4-1 in their last 9 games, they have been inconsistent recently.
^Calgary Flames at Columbus Blue Jackets
Friday, November 29, 2024, 3:00 PM, ESPN+
This is sure to be something of an emotional evening in Columbus after the passing of Johnny Gaudreau this past off season. The former Flame was plying his trade in Columbus for the past couple of seasons, and I am sure both fans will have a moment where they think about their former teammate before getting down to business.
The Flames have been arguably the surprise team of the season, winning regularly despite rebuilding with a lot of young guys in the lineup. The Jackets are pulling out of a slump and have won each of their last 3 games, so two teams in good form meeting up here.

2021 Top Matches Week 8
Hard as it may seem to believe, we are now roughly one-quarter of the way through the 2021 NHL season. When you look at the current standings, the one thing that stands out is that no one team looks to be totally dominant this season. The divisional races are all tight, and while it is still a little too early to be having the conversation, the same is true of the playoff battles in both conferences. Those standings will change in the coming weeks and months, but we have certainly seen enough hockey to start picking out the games that look great on this week’s schedule, so let’s go ahead and do just that.
NHL Betting Odds – Games Analysis, Top Picks, Previews for Week 8 Matches
Pittsburgh Penguins at Calgary Flames – Monday
When you see a team having a great season, you generally expect them to have a very good record on home ice. The Flames have been excellent this season, especially on the defensive end of the ice, but they are still just 3-2-3 at home. Monday night will see them host the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are a solid 5-2-2 on the road. When these two met earlier in the season, it was the Calgary Flames who picked up the 4-0 win.
Washington Capitals at Florida Panthers – Tuesday
It is perhaps a bit too early to say that the bubble has burst for the Florida Panthers, who have lost their lead atop the Atlantic Division after taking back-to-back losses to end the week. They are still 14-4-3 on the season. The Washington Capitals are now atop the Metropolitan Division after winning 3 in a row, which included a 4-3 win over Florida last week. These two have split their two meetings this season, with both decided by a single goal.
Vegas Golden Knights at Anaheim Ducks – Wednesday
The Alberta teams are taking turns sitting atop the Pacific Division in the early going, but both Vegas and Anaheim are doing a decent job of keeping the pace behind the top two. They will meet up in what is a crucial divisional game, even this early in the season, on Wednesday night. The Anaheim Ducks are a solid 8-4-1 on home ice, so no easy task for the Knights here.
Boston Bruins at Nashville Predators – Thursday
As we mentioned earlier, it is perhaps a little too early in the season to be talking about the playoff picture, but you can bet that every player in the league has that in mind. As it stands at the moment, both of these teams are sitting below the playoff line, and while there is plenty of time to rectify that, neither one wants to dig a hole too deep to get out of. Boston is 6-4-0 in their last 10 and are in better form right now than the Nashville Predators.
Edmonton Oilers at Seattle Kraken – Friday
The last time we had a new franchise come into the league, the Vegas Golden Knights stunned everyone by going all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. We are not going to see a repeat of that success with the Seattle Kraken, who have just 15 points through their opening 21 games. They will host the Pacific Division leaders on Friday night as they look to avenge a 5-2 loss to the Oilers earlier this season.
