Four teams favored to win the title
Before the NBA Summer League, the Warriors and Celtics were the two favorites to win it all. After the Summer League, the Nets and Clippers have joined Golden State and Boston at +600 odds.
The Summer League didn’t have much to do with why the Nets and Clippers are at +600 just like Golden State and Boston. Two things have happened.
First, both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant remain Brooklyn Nets. Neither player has gone to a different team. Second, John Wall, whom many believe is one of the better point guards in the league, is now a Los Angeles Clipper.
Wall joins a team that includes Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. If Kawhi is one-hundred percent healthy, the Clippers should be one of the Western Conference’s best teams.
The Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns may offer overlay odds
The Clippers, Warriors, Celtics, and Nets are at +600. At +750, the Bucks may have as much of a shot of winning the title as the favorites.
Milwaukee’s starting five hasn’t changed much since the 2021 title run. The reason Milwaukee failed to defend their championship in 2022 is because Khris Middleton got hurt during the playoffs. If Middleton returns one-hundred percent this season, the Bucks should be one of the better teams in the NBA.
The Suns didn’t lose because one of their starts got hurt. Dallas stepped it up and knocked Phoenix out of the Western Conference Playoffs.
But the Suns matched Indiana’s offer sheet to DeAndre Ayton, signaling they’re serious about going for the title. If players step it up to help Chris Paul and Devin Booker, the Suns could surprise at better than fair odds.
Heat, Mavericks, and Nuggets will be good enough to win the NBA Championship
The Miami Heat were good enough this past season to win the NBA Finals. If Victor Oladipo improves, last season was his first after suffering multiple injuries the past few seasons, the Heat should be better in 2023.
The Mavericks lost Jalen Brunson. But Mark Cuban did what was required to give Dallas the best chance to compete in the loaded West. The Mavs acquired Christian Wood and Javale McGee.
Now with a terrific inside presence, the Dallas Mavericks should be one of the best teams in the conference. Dallas has a better shot to win the NBA Championship than the +1500 odds indicate.
Two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic has carried the Denver Nuggets the past couple of seasons. In 2022-2023, Jokic should finally get some help because Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray should both start the season one-hundred percent healthy.
The Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers offer lower odds than the Mavericks and Nuggets but Dallas and Denver are much better plays to win rings than the Grizz or Sixers.
