Betting Advice for 2024 NFL Wild Card Round | MyBookie Playoff Preview

2023-24 NFL | 104th season of the National Football League
NFL Wild Card: Saturday, January 13th – Monday, January 15th, 2024

Cleveland Browns at Houston Texans

NFL Odds: Browns -2.5
Saturday, January 13th at 4:30 PM | NBC
NRG Stadium, Houston, TX

The Browns are the favorite even though this happens in Houston because Cleveland’s defense is one of the best in the NFL. The Browns D should handle C.J. Stroud and the Texans offense.

When Clevland has the football, in Joe Flacco they will trust. Flacco is playing decent ball. Unless the former Raven makes mistakes, the Browns should cover the spread.

Miami Dolphins at Kansas City Chiefs

NFL Odds: Chiefs -3.5
Saturday, January 13th at 4:30 PM | Peacock
GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO

The Kansas City Chiefs ended the season playing much better than they did in November. KC was struggling on offense, but in late December, Mahomes and the Chiefs put it together.

One of the reasons is because Kansas City activated Mecole Hardman. Hardman will help to open the field for Mahomes to get the ball to Travis Kelce. When Miami has the ball, Tua should struggle against a terrific Steve Spagnuolo coached defense.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills

NFL Odds: Bills -10
Sunday, January 14th at 1:00 PM | FOX
Highmark Stadium, Orchard Park, NY

Mason Rudolph and the Steelers could have some success on offense. Rudolph to George Pickens is a decent QB and WR combination.

But the Steelers have zero shot of stopping Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills from scoring touchdowns. T.J. Watt won’t play on Sunday, which means the Bills move the ball up and down the field with ease.

Green Bay Packers at Dallas Cowboys

NFL Odds: Cowboys -7.5
Sunday, January 14th at 4:30 PM | FOX
AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX

Dallas’ defense is one of the best units in the NFL. But on Sunday, it’s up against a decent offense, one that hit it’s stride in NFL Week 18.

Aaron Jones, Green Bay’s running back, is healthy. That’s a big deal because when Green Bay can rush the football, Jordan Love plays great. The Packers are an overlay at +7.5. Don’t be surprised if the Cowboys win this on the last possession and with a field goal.

NFL Wild Card Parlay Pick: Green Bay Packers +7.5 | Bet Packers at Cowboys Today

Los Angeles Rams at Detroit Lions

NFL Odds: Lions -3.5
Sunday, January 14th at 8:00 PM | NBC
Ford Field, Detroit, MI

Detroit is as solid as it gets. The offense can light up a scoreboard. However, the Lions do have a flaw.

Detroit isn’t great against pass, which is bad news if you are a Lions fan. The Rams offense is one of the best in the NFL. Detroit is going to find it difficult to cover Cooper Kupp, Puka Nucua, Tutu Atwell, Tyler Higbee, Demarcus Robinson, and Kyren Williams out of the backfield. Rams win this straight up.

NFL Wild Card Parlay Pick: Los Angeles Rams +3.5 | Bet Rams at Lions Today

Philadelphia Eagles at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFL Odds: Eagles -2.5
Monday, January 15th at 8:15 PM | ESPN, ABC, ESPN+
Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL

Philadelphia lost 5 of their final 6 games. The losing streak could have been much worse, but somehow, the Eagles got by the Giants in the first head-to-head.

Tampa played decent football down the stretch. This happens at Raymond James Stadium and Baker Mayfield has the edge over Jalen Hurts because the Philly QB is hurt. Buccaneers should win this straight up.

NFL Wild Card Parlay Pick: Tampa Bay Buccaneers +2.5 | Bet Eagles at Buccaneers Today

2023 Betting Advice for NFL Wild Card Round

This year’s Wild Card round will feature all rematches from the regular season, the 5th time since the 1970 merger that every game in the opening round of the playoffs is a rematch from the regular season (2022, 2009, 2004, 1994, 1992).

Here is the complete analysis for your NFL Playoff Betting.

There normally are 272 regular-season games in the NFL but there were 271 this season because the Week 17 matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals was canceled after Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field in Cincinnati and went into cardiac arrest. Thankfully, he should make a full recovery and whether Hamlin ever plays football again really doesn’t matter. Both the Bills and Bengals are back in the AFC playoffs as repeat division winners.

Exactly half of the 14-team playoff field failed to qualify in the 2021 season: Baltimore, Jacksonville, the Los Angeles Chargers, Miami, Minnesota, the New York Giants and Seattle. A rather amazing streak continues as since 1990 – of 33 consecutive seasons – at least four teams every season have qualified for the playoffs after failing to make the postseason the year before. Six of this season’s 14 playoff teams have won at least one Super Bowl since 2000.

The AFC South (Jacksonville) and NFC North (Minnesota) were both won by teams that missed the postseason in 2021. Philadelphia (NFC East) and San Francisco 49ers (NFC West) are also new division winners this season. At least two teams have won their divisions the season after missing the playoffs in 19 of the past 20 years.

Jacksonville completed the “worst-to-first” turnaround, winning the AFC South the season after finishing in last place. At least one team has won its division the season after finishing in or tied for last place in 18 of the past 20 seasons. The Jaguars host the Chargers on Saturday in a matchup of terrific young QBs making their playoff debuts in LA’s Justin Herbert and Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence.

Herbert had 4,739 passing yards with 25 touchdown passes this season and became the first player in NFL history with at least 4,500 passing yards in two of his first three career seasons. Lawrence became the sixth quarterback since 2000 to be selected No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft and reach the postseason in one of his first two career seasons.

Perhaps expect close games in the postseason. There were 122 regular-season games decided by a touchdown (six points or less) and 203 games within one score (eight points) in the fourth quarter this season, both the most such games in a single season in NFL history.

The team with the worst against the spread record in the NFL this season is a playoff team as Tampa Bay (4-12-1 ATS) hosts Dallas on Monday night to conclude the Wild Card round. Kansas City (6-10-1 ATS) and Seattle (7-10 ATS) also were among the worst ATS teams to get in. The Chiefs, who won their seventh consecutive AFC West division title, finished as the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

As of this writing, there are two double-digit underdogs in the Wild-Card round: Seattle +10 at San Francisco and Miami +10.5 at Buffalo. Double-digit favorites in the NFL playoffs are 11-3 ATS since 2010.

The marquee matchup is Monday’s Dallas at Tampa Bay (+2.5) matchup in perhaps the final NFL game for seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady as he could retire at age 45 – or go play somewhere else. Brady set the NFL single-season record for completions (490) in 2022 and added 4,694 passing yards and 25 touchdown passes as the Buccaneers earned consecutive NFC South division titles for the first time in franchise history. Brady is the postseason’s all-time leader in games played (47), passing yards (13,049) and touchdown passes (86).

Dallas QB Dak Prescott makes his fourth trip to the postseason after leading Dallas to back-to-back playoff berths. In four career postseason starts, he has nine touchdowns (six passing, three rushing), including three consecutive games with both a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown. The Cowboys lost 19-3 at home to Tampa Bay in Week 1.

The NFC is the conference with 0 or 1 former 1st-round picks starting at QB in a postseason since 2007. Depending on the Dolphins and their injury situation, the AFC could have all first-round picks starting at QB.

2022-23 Playoffs Betting Advice for the NFL Wild Card Round

We are just 1 week away from the end of the NFL regular season, which means that the playoffs are right around the corner. As you are all well aware, the postseason begins with the Wild Card Round, which has proven to be rather unpredictable over the years. Basically, you are getting 6 teams in each conference who are not that far apart in terms of talent, so it can often feel like a bit of a coin flip when it comes to trying to figure out who will come out on top. Any advice handed out at this stage should be taken with a bit of a grain of salt, because just when you think you see trends developing, you get a weekend that throws everything out the window. We will have a clearer idea on how to wager the Wild Card once the games are set, but for now, let’s take a look at some general NFL Playoffs Betting rules.

Home Field is Not Always an Automatic Advantage

This is a statement that we are reserving solely for the Wild Card Round. While home field has proven to be more advantageous in the Divisional and Conference Championship Rounds, it has not been that way in the Wild Card. Again, I believe that much of that comes down to parity, and in recent years we have seen teams do better on the road than they do at home. Of the 10 teams that have officially clinched a playoff spot this season, 9 have winning road records, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers being the lone exception. Going on the road for a playoff game is simply not as daunting as it once seemed to be.

Seeding Can Be Misleading

It’s easy, not to mention a little lazy, to look at the seeding and assume that the higher seed is a lock. That’s not even true when you have a #2 seed go against a #7 in the Wild Card Round. Every year, it seems as though a lower seed take out one of the big guns in the opening round, with the Cincinnati Bengals falling into that category last season. You also have to look at the bigger picture, too. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to have a home playoff game as a #4 seed in the NFC, but they could potentially do so with a losing record. If the season were to end right now, would you feel comfortable betting the Bucs against the Dallas Cowboys, based on seeding alone?

Don’t Play Every Game

Let’s face it, when the playoffs roll around, we all want to get in on the action, but you really need to adopt the same approach as you would take in the regular season. That means picking the games you feel the most confident about and dodging those that feel like a bit of a risky bet. A lot of times, that could be the #4 against the #5 seed, but you could also get a #2 versus a #7 that feels a little off, too. For example, look at what the Green Bay Packers are doing right now. If they win this weekend, they nab the #7 seed and hit the playoffs on a 5-game winning streak. Sure, they will have a tough opening round game on the road, but the pressure will be more heavily on the team that’s hosting.
