Heading into the 2023 NFL Season, the defending NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles appear poised for a repeat run. Because Jalen Hurts and the offense had so much success in 2022, many failed to see how fantastic the defense played. But like many NFL teams, Philly’s D saw a lot of turnover. Did the changes affect how the Eagles defense will perform this season?
Check out an in-depth NFL betting odds and analysis for the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defense during the upcoming 2023 season.

Philadelphia Eagles Defense In-Depth Betting Analysis
Eagles’ Defensive Changes During the Offseason
The Eagles lost Javon Hargrave, their top defensive tackle from last season. After losing Hargraves, Philadelphia stood pat until the NFL Draft where they selected Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter.
Many NFL Draft experts had Carter the highest-rated player on their draft boards. The Eagles also signed Terrell Edmunds away from Pittsburgh to play strong safety.
Philadelphia Eagles Defensive Line Analysis
Although Hargraves no longer plays for Philly, the addition of Carter has many NFL analysts pegging Philly’s defensive line the best in the league. That may be true.
Or it may not. Hargraves was a veteran that knew the ins and outs of playing D-line in the National Football League. Carter showed immaturity while at Georgia and will have a learning curve.
Talent is one thing. Work ethic is another. Jalen may not have the work ethic, at least at first, to be a top defensive lineman in the NFL.
Josh Sweat, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham are all great players. The three vets figure to bolster the rookie’s chances of success.
Philadelphia Eagles Secondary Analysis
The secondary is good. Darius Slay is a terrific corner. Terrell Edmunds had 41 solo tackles and 5 passes defended for the Steelers last season.
James Bradbury is one of the most underrated corners in the league. Bradbury scored 3 picks, had 39 solo tackles, and defended 17 passes.
Free safety Reed Blankenship was a rookie last season. He will improve in his second season. ‘
Philadelphia Eagles Linebackers Analysis
Weakside linebacker Nicholas Morrow comes over from Chicago. Morrow had 83 tackles playing for the Bears.
Nakobe Dean gets the start this season after having only 9 tackles last season. Haasan Reddick is the units leader. Reddick had 16 sacks last season to go along with 35 tackles and 5 forced fumbles.
If Dean steps it up, the unit will be one of the best in the league.
Eagles Points Allowed & Yards Allowed Per Game Range Prediction
Philly ranked second when allowing just 301 yards per game last season. This season, the Eagles will allow a higher average yards per game because the schedule boasts more quality teams.
Philadelphia must play AFC East teams Miamib, Buffalo, New England, and the New York Jets. San Francisco, Minnesota, Kansas City, and Seattle are also on the schedule. So the Eagles will also allow more points per game on average this season than last.
Eagles Yards Allowed Per Game Range: 305 – 312
Eagles Points Allowed Range: 21 – 23
DT Jalen Carter NFL Rookie Defensive Player of the Year: +670
Analysis: The odds are too low on a rookie defensive tackle who may not even want to be in pads on Sundays. The problem with players like Jalen Carter is that even though they excelled in college, they have to raise their game to a different level in the pros.
Some players relish the challenge. Other players take snaps off and don’t care to do more than they feel like doing.
We don’t know which player Jalen Carter is. Since we don’t know, we can’t back Jalen at just +670 odds to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
