Battle for the Cup: Who Will Clash in the NHL's Conference Finals?

Who Will Be the Favorites? Examining Potential Conference Finals with NHL Odds Analysis

The second round of the NHL Playoffs is well underway, with a couple of the series very much on the brink of coming to an end.

Both of those series are in the Eastern Conference, so we could have the Conference Final on that side of the bracket decided rather quickly.

My Analysis about Possible Matchups for Conference Finals

Over in the West, things are still tight, with both series just 3 games deep at this point. Game 4 in both of those series is going to be absolutely critical, as the outcome could have one or two teams sitting on the brink of elimination. We are now going to take a look at the possible Conference Final matchups in the NHL, keeping in mind that our look at the Western Conference is probably going to take a little longer than the East.

Eastern Conference

As we mentioned at the start of this piece, the Eastern Conference Final is about as close to set in stone as it gets. After losing the opening game of their series against the Boston Bruins, the Florida Panthers have gone on a tear, winning 3 in a row, including both games in Boston, to give themselves the opportunity to close things out on home ice. They will get the chance to do that on Tuesday night and it seems difficult to imagine them passing up the opportunity.

It’s a pretty similar story in the other series in the Eastern Conference. The New York Rangers have been arguably the best team in these playoffs, winning 7 in a row before finally taking their first loss in the playoffs in Carolina. That said, they are in prime position, as they head back to MSG to potentially close this one out, which I believe they will do, setting up an Eastern Conference Final against the Florida Panthers.

Western Conference

Things aren’t quite so clear cut in the Western Conference, although that may change once we get both Game 4 matchups in the books. The Colorado Avalanche got their series against the Dallas Stars off to a perfect start, winning Game 1 on the road to steal home ice advantage. They lost Game 2, and then gave up that advantage with a loss at home in Game 3. The Stars have looked good in the last 2 games, and another win in Colorado would make it very hard for the Avs to come back from. If, though, the Avalanche can tie up the series and make it a best of 3, your guess as is good as mine as to who would move on. I am still leaning toward Dallas.

The other series seems to be a bit more difficult to predict. Yes, the Vancouver Canucks have a 2-1 series lead, but all 3 games to this point have been decided by a single goal. Game 4 will be in Edmonton and is pretty much a must win for the Oilers. They simply cannot afford to lose and head back to Vancouver in a 1-3 hole, as I think that would be too much for them to dig out of. I am still on the fence with this one, but if you pushed me, I would take the Canucks to move on.

2024 Potential Conference Finals

The opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is in the books, and I have to say that we had a pretty stellar round in terms of predictions.

The only series that we got wrong was the Vegas/Dallas matchup, which went to 7 games, as predicted, but with the Stars moving on instead of the defending champions. Now, take a look at the matches that could represent great chances to win in the next phase of the Stanely Cup Finals: Hurricanes vs Rangers, Panthers vs Bruins, Avalanche vs Stars and Canucks vs Oilers.

My Analysis about Possible Matchups for Conference Finals

What that means is that we are going to have a new champion crowned this season, but who will it be? Well, the path to the Stanley Cup continues with Round 2 and a bunch of series that look a good deal more difficult to predict. Still, we are going to do our best to deliver results that were as solid as the opening round, so let’s dive right in and take a look at the 4 series coming up in Round 3 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Eastern Conference

Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Rangers

This series has already started, with the Rangers getting the win in Game 1, beating Carolina 4-3 at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers are now unbeaten through their opening 5 games of the playoffs after sweeping the Capitals in the opening round. The Hurricanes also had a pretty comfortable passage into this round after taking out the Islanders in 5 games. The Rangers took 2 of 3 from Carolina in the regular season, with both teams picking up wins on the road. Carolina is going to need to try and get the split in Game 2, but even if they do, I think the Rangers take this series.

Florida Panthers vs Boston Bruins

We have the top 2 seeds in the Eastern Conference squaring off here, so expect this one to be a real battle. The Panthers have had a few days off after getting past the Tampa Bay Lightning in 5 games. The Bruins, though, had to go the full 7 games to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in a thrilling series. Boston took all 4 games in the regular season against the Panthers, but all 4 games were close, with 3 of them decided by a single goal. I expect this series to be equally tight, with the Panthers edging it.

Western Conference

Colorado Avalanche vs Dallas Stars

The opening round series between the Stars and the Golden Knights was one for the ages, with Dallas getting it done in the deciding 7th game. They have little time to relax before opening things up at home against the #3 seeded Colorado Avalanche, who made it look easy in Round 1 with a 4-1 series win over the Winnipeg Jets. It was the Avs who took 3 of 4 from Dallas in the regular season, including a couple of road wins. They will settle for a split in the opening 2 games, and if they get it, I think Colorado takes this series.

Vancouver Canucks vs Edmonton Oilers

The Canucks were made to work a little harder than expected in the opening round, disposing of the pesky Nashville Predators in 6 games. The Oilers made things look pretty easy against the LA Kings, winning their first round series in 5 games. It’s always fun to see divisional rivals go head-to-head in the post season, but will this one be close? The Canucks won all 4 games against the Oilers in the regular season, including a couple in blowout fashion. I think this series is tighter, but the result is the same.

2023 Conference Finals Possible Matchups

With the 2020 NHL playoffs getting underway on Tuesday night, now is a perfect time to identify the handful of teams – and the possible NHL Finals matchups – that could very well take place this postseason. To that end, I’ve highlighted six teams and three possible finals matchups, that could all take place when the 2020 Stanley Cup Finals get underway. With this year’s final series set to begin n Sept. 22 and be completed no later than Oct. 4, let’s find out what my top three possible Stanley Cup Finals matchups are so you can start planning ahead your bets against their NHL odds.

NHL Conference Finals Predictions – Possible Matchups

No. 3  Boston Bruins (44-26-12) vs. St. Louis Blues (42-29-10)

Boston won the President’s Trophy for the most victories in all of hockey, but you’d never know it since the Bruins dropped all three of their restart games including a narrow 2-1 loss against Washington on Sunday. Boston has not scored over two goals in their last three games, but I still believe the Bruins have a decent shot to reach the Stanley Cup Finals.

Boston ranks a solid ninth in scoring (3.2 gpg), but it is their league-leading defense (2.4 gpg) that will lead the way if they do make an extended playoff run. Right-winger David Pastrnak tied Washington’s Alex Ovechkin for the league lead in goals scored (48) while veteran left-winger Brad Marchand has scored 28 goals and dished out 59 assists. Center Patrice Bergeron finished second in goals scored (31) and six Bruins in all have reached double figures in goals scored. Veteran goalie Tuukka Rask has had a fine season by recording a 2.12 goals-against- average.

The defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues tied for the most wins in the western conference, but they struggled mightily in their three restart games by going 0-2-1 while suffering losses to Colorado, Vegas and Dallas. Still, St. Louis ranks 14th in scoring (3.1 gpg) and a stellar fifth in goals allowed (2.7 gpg).

Center Ryan O’Reilly put up a team-high 61 points while dishing out 49 assists. Left-winger David Perron tied with fellow left-winger Jaden Schwartz for a team-high 35 goals while center Brayden Schenn and center Robert Thomas both added an impressive 33 goals. Five players have put 52 points or more on the board and a whopping 11 players have reached double figures in goals scored.

No. 2 Tampa Bay Lightning (43-27-6) vs. Colorado Avalanche (42-28-8)

Tampa Bay beat Washington and Boston in their first two games of the restart campaign, but the Lightning got completely humbled by red-hot Philadelphia in their 4-1 loss on Saturday. No matter…the prohibitive Stanley Cup favorites have the league’s top-ranked offense by putting up a stupendous 3.5 goals per game while also ranking an encouraging eighth in goals allowed (2.8 gpg).

In addition to that, the Lightning will have star center Steven Stamkos back on the ice after he sat out the entire round robin. Stamkos finished second in points with 29 goals and 37 assists. Superstar right-winger Nikita Kucherov recorded a team-high 85 points while finding the back of the net 33 times while aa players in total have reached double figures in goals scored.

As far as Colorado is concerned, the Avalanche look like they’re going to be difficult to dispatch as they rank a stellar fourth in scoring (3.4 gpg) while also ranking sixth in goals allowed (2.7 gpg). Colorado went 2-0-1 in the round-robin and center Nathan MacKinnon posted a team-high 35 goals and 58 assists while defenseman Cale Makar put 50 points on the board. 11 players have reached double figures in goals scored. Last but not least, the Avs have one of the best goalie tandems in all of hockey in Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz.

No. 1 Philadelphia Flyers (41-28-7) vs. Vegas Knights (39-32-8)

The Flyers were the hottest team in the NHL at the hiatus and tied Vegas for the best record in all of hockey since Jan. 8. Philadelphia won all three of their restart games by taking out Tampa Bay, Washington and Boston while limiting all three of their conference rivals to a single goal. Philly has gone a blistering 18-6 over their last 24 games and ranks an identical seventh in scoring (3.3 gpg) and goals allowed (2.8 gpg).

Right-winger Travis Konecny has scored a team-high 61 points while center Sean Couturier has added 59 points. Right-winger Jakub Voracek put 56 points on the board, including a team-high 44 assists while fellow right-winger Claude Giroux has put 53 points on the board. 10 players in total have reached double figures in goals scored and right now, the Flyers look like the best team in the Eastern Conference at the very least. Oh…and then there’s the fact that 21-year-old goalie Carter Hart is displaying all of the skills that have made him one of the league’s top rising young stars.

When it comes to Vegas, the Golden Knights are also absolutely on fire, having won five straight and a blistering 14 of their last 16 games overall. Vegas took out Dallas, St. Louis and Colorado in their three restart games while scoring at least four goals in every contest and 15 goals in total. The Knights rank an identical 13th in scoring (3.2gpg) and goals allowed (2.9 gpg) while watching nine players reach double figures in goals scored.

Left-winger Max Pacioretty is healthy and ready to roll for the Golden Knights after missing the round robin due to injury. He scored a team-high 32 goals and team-high 66 points while right-winger Mark Stone has put 63 points on the board. Right-winger Reilly Smith finished second in goals score (27) wadding an identical 27 assists. The Knights have put a whopping 23 goals in the back of the net over their last five games. Philadelphia versus Vegas is my top pairing to reach the Stanley Cup Finals and make no mistake about it, the way both of these clubs are playing, it could easily happen.
