NBA Betting News: Klay Thompson Does Not Change Mavericks’ 2025 Title Odds.
They have added perimeter shooting in former Warriors All-Star guard and future Hall of Famer Klay Thompson, although his addition still has Dallas +1000 to win it all next summer on the NBA futures odds.
NBA Finals Recap
The Dallas Mavericks went from the Western Conference’s No. 5 seed to the NBA Finals, but they clearly were not up to the task against the Boston Celtics, who won their record 18th title in five games. And are now for sale, but that’s for another day.
The Mavericks failed to reach 100 points in all four losses against Boston and clearly needed to add 3-point shooting this off season.
^Mavericks on Playoffs
In the first round of the playoffs, the No. 4-seeded Los Angeles Clippers were favored to beat the Mavs. But Dallas won that series in six games.
For the Western Conference semifinals, the No. 1-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder were favored. But the Mavs won that series in six games.
The disrespect continued in the Western Conference Finals, as the No. 3-seeded Timberwolves were favored. But the Mavs won that series in five games.
^Is it about money?
Thompson wanted to return to Golden State, but the Dubs are in salary-cap hell and lowballed him.
Team governor Joe Lacob was open about his desire to duck under the luxury tax, given the exorbitant penalties paid by teams in the new CBA—particularly when it comes to roster flexibility.
So, Thompson ended his historic 13-year run with the four-time champion Warriors and decided to sign with Dallas for $50 million over three years because of the chance to compete for a fifth title with the Western Conference champion Dallas.
Probably doesn’t hurt that Thompson will be playing alongside two more Hall of Fame talents in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
LeBron James was reportedly willing to take a pay cut for the Lakers to land Thompson, and even spoke to him at the start of the free agency period on Sunday night, but the 34-year-old chose the Mavericks.
Having missed out on Thompson, the Lakers have shifted their focus to DeMar DeRozan.

Taxes and Trades
Thompson had four-years offers worth more overall money available, but the opportunity to win another championship and the difference in state taxes were among the factors that made him choose Dallas.
Technically it’s a three-way sign-and trade as the Mavericks sent guard/forward Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets and two second-round picks to the Warriors.
Dallas is sending its own 2031 second-round pick in the deal, as well as the least favorable of the 76ers or Nuggets‘ second-round pick in 2025.
^Thompson Stats
The 6-foot-6 Thompson has clearly lost a step off a few major injuries and is coming off meager production for him in averaging 17.9 points per game last season, his lowest output since his second year in the league.
He isn’t the same defender he once was, posting a 116.1 defensive rating a year ago. However, he is still a high-level shooter — he hit 38.7 percent of his attempts from 3-point range last season — and should create more space for Doncic and Irving.
Thompson has knocked down 41.3% of his attempts from long distance over the course of his career and made five All-Star teams.
He has finished first or second in the NBA in catch-and-shoot triples eight times in the last 11 seasons — including last year.
Klay made more 3-pointers against “tight” coverage (a defender within 2 to 4 feet of him when he let it go) than any other player in the league last season, and shot 39.5% on those attempts.
^Other Transfers
The Mavs also have reached an agreement with New Orleans free agent Naji Marshall on a three-year, $27 million contract. That led to Dallas trading forward Derrick Jones Jr. heading to the Clippers.
The Mavericks already had traded Tim Hardaway Jr. to Detroit for guard Quentin Grimes in a deal. Marshall projects as an upgrade over the journeyman Jones.
The 2024-25 NBA schedule likely won’t be released until next month, but Thompson’s return to the Bay Area will be circled for sure.
I would argue, Dallas is now the second-best team in the West behind Oklahoma City, which has already added Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein this off season and is the +480 favorite in the West.
Dallas is seventh at +1025 to win it all according to MyBookie Sportsbook.
