Very few people are talking about the Memphis Grizzlies reaching their first NBA Finals next summer, but they are rising toward the top of the Western Conference standings and have won three straight and nine of 10 as they welcome the Brooklyn Nets.

The Grizzlies are double-digit favorites on the NBA odds.

Nets at Grizzlies Daily Line NBA Subject to Change: Grizzlies -10.5 (total 227.5)
Expert Prediction: Grizzlies 117, Nets 109

Brooklyn Nets +427

Brooklyn (10-14) has been off since losing for the fourth time in five games Sunday, 118-113 at home vs. Milwaukee. The Nets led 108-104 after Dennis Schroder’s jumper with 3:08 left, but Milwaukee countered by scoring 15 of the game’s final 20 points. After making just 8 of 22 field goals (36.4%) in the first quarter, the Nets shot 56% over the final 36 minutes.

Dennis Schroder

Schroder led Brooklyn in scoring for the fourth time this season with 34 points, surpassing 30 points for the third time this year. He led the team in shots as he continues to take on more of a scoring role with Cam Thomas out injured. Schroder was efficient, as he made 13-of-19 from the field and 4-of-7 3-point attempts. He also dished out 11 assists without turning the ball over. The 31-year-old, who will earn about $13MM this season before reaching unrestricted free agency in 2025, is averaging career highs in several statistical categories, including assists per game (6.5) and three-point percentage (38.5%) and surely will be traded by the February deadline.

Nic Claxton

Claxton had 21 points and 10 rebounds. He set a season high in scoring, reaching the 20-point mark for the first time this year. He has now recorded a double-double in four contests. Cameron Johnson had 26 points, including 4-for-8 from deep. It was Johnson’s sixth outing of the season with at least 25 points, and he’s hit that threshold in three straight contests while also connecting on four or more threes in eight games overall. Dorian Finney-Smith returned after missing four games and had nine points and four rebounds. He took back his spot in the starting five and exceeded his season-long average of 29.1 minutes per game.

After averaging 12.6 minutes per game in his first 15 outings, Nets guard Keon Johnson has logged 26.3 MPG in seven games (three starts) since Thomas went down with a hamstring injury. Johnson recognizes his playing time could fall off again once Brooklyn’s leading scorer returns.

Jordi Fernandez

“Nothing is guaranteed, and it’s not guaranteed for him or anybody else,” head coach Fernandez said. “So the group’s been doing great. There’s going to be guys at times going in and out of the rotation. I hope if you’re out of the rotation, you work really hard to get back in. If you’re in the second group, you work hard to be in the first group. That’s important because that just helps the entire group to be better.”

The Goal Attempts

A total of 47.2% of Brooklyn’s field goal attempts this season are from beyond the arc. Only Boston (56.5%), Charlotte (48.1%), Chicago (47.9%) and Minnesota (47.9%) attempt a greater percentage of their shots from 3-point range. Brooklyn’s current 3-point percentage of .385 is fourth in the NBA and ranks as the team’s second best in team history (.392 in 2020-21). The Nets make the fourth-most catch-and-shoot 3-pointers per game (11.5-of-29.6 at .387) in the NBA.

No one sends opponents to the free-throw line more per shot attempt than the Nets. They have allowed opponents to shoot nearly 67% from inside of six feet, tied for the league’s third-highest rate. Similarly, the team is allowing the highest effective field goal rate in the league. The inability to stop clubs from converting that close in leaves Brooklyn in a position where it is often fouling inside the paint.

Against Western Teams

Friday marks the first time the Nets have played more than two games in the regular season against a Western Conference opponent since the 1978-79 season, when they played all 11 West teams at least three times (and did so for the Nets’ first three NBA seasons – 1976-79). Two East teams played three games against the West last season – Detroit (three vs. Memphis) and Chicago (three vs. San Antonio).

A win would extend the Nets’ franchise-best start against the Western Conference this season, improving to 7-1 overall and 6-0 on the road. Brooklyn had never been 4-0 or better to start on the road against the West prior to its current 5-0 start this season.

Memphis Grizzlies -625

Memphis (17-8) won its third straight game on Sunday, 140-112 in Washington when it would have been easy to be caught in a trap there after a massive win in Boston on Saturday night. After the Wizards closed a 17-point halftime deficit to nine early in the third quarter, the Grizzlies came out of a timeout and responded with their own 16-0 run to make it 91-66 and prevent any late drama.

The Grizzlies shot 52.1% from the floor and 39.5% from 3-point range vs. Washington despite missing two-time All-Star Ja Morant (back soreness) and swingman Brandon Clarke (toe soreness) after both started in Boston. Memphis improved to 7-4 without Morant this season and 3-1 without both Morant and Clarke but both should play Friday.

Jaren Jackson Jr.

Jackson Jr. had 21 points, four rebounds and four blocks despite playing only 17 minutes in the rout. It marked the third time in Jackson Jr.’s career that he has scored 20+ points in 20 minutes or fewer, more than any other player in franchise history. Jackson became the first player since at least 1983-84 to record 20+ points and 4+ blocks in under 18 minutes.

Santi Aldama

Aldama totaled 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists off the bench. Seven Grizzlies scored in double figures, the 12th time this season that Memphis has placed seven or more players in double-digit scoring. No other NBA team has more than five such games.

Memphis has scored 115+ points in 10 straight games (126.7 points per game in this 10-game span), the third-longest such streak in franchise history. The Grizzlies had a 12-game streak in the 2022-23 season and an 11-game streak in the 2021-22 season. They are now the highest-scoring team in the NBA this season (122.1 points) and have scored 140+ points in a game twice this season, tying the single-season franchise record (2021-22 and 2022-23). Memphis has led for nearly 370 of a possible 480 minutes over its last 10 games (9-1 record).

Rookie of the Year Contenders

The Grizzlies have two Rookie of the Year candidates in first-round center Zach Edey and second-round forward Jaylen Wells. However, Edey has been sidelined since Nov. 17, when he suffered a sprained ankle against the Denver Nuggets and will not return Friday. Edey is averaging 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds in 14 games. He started nine matchups before coming off the bench for his last five games prior to his injury. Wells is averaging 11.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game and playing excellent defense. He was the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for October/November, the first Memphis player to win that honor since Morant in 2019-20.

The Ratings

Overall, Memphis ranks among the top seven in offensive and defensive rating. Offensively, the Grizzlies are putting up their best effective field goal percentage (56.1%) in a decade. But they lag just behind the rest of the league in 3-point shooting, ranked 17th in 3-point percentage.

The Nets are one of only two NBA franchises (Sacramento) where the Grizzlies’ single-game records for points, rebounds and assists are all currently and exclusively held by players from the Vancouver era (1996-2001).

Nets vs Grizzlies Season Series

The Nets lead 2-0 and try for the unlikely sweep. They won 119-106 in Memphis on Oct. 30, although the Grizzlies were still finding their way back then. Dennis Schroder had 33 points and eight assists, Cam Thomas added 19 points, and Ziaire Williams, who started his NBA career with Memphis before an offseason trade, had 17 points. Jaren Jackson Jr. led Memphis with 30 points, connecting on 10 of 12 shots, including all three of his 3-pointers. Ja Morant had 14 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, but was 5 of 16 from the field and made only one of his six shots from outside the arc. The Grizzlies had 22 turnovers. Memphis leads the all-time series 30-27 and is 15-13 at home but dropped the past two.

Season Series

Grizzlies lead 1-0, winning 131-125 in double overtime on Nov. 30 in Brooklyn. Mike Conley scored a season-high 37 points and rookie Jaren Jackson Jr. set a career high with 36 points. Conley, who scored 13 of Memphis’ 14 points in the second overtime, also had 10 assists. The Grizzlies trailed by seven points with 26.8 seconds left in regulation when Jackson knocked down a three-pointer and drew the foul to convert a four-point play. Memphis forced a turnover on Brooklyn’s inbounds pass, and Jackson hit the game-tying triple from 30 feet to force overtime.

Jackson became the third-youngest player in NBA history to score at least 35 points in a game, behind LeBron James and Kevin Durant. D’Angelo Russell scored 26 points and had eight assists to lead Brooklyn. It marked the Grizzlies’ first multiple-overtime game since Dec. 5, 2016, New Orleans and the team’s sixth straight win in a multiple-OT contest. The Grizz have lost the past two at home in the series, though.

Why Bet on Brooklyn?

The Nets were 126-121 home winners over New Orleans on Wednesday to end a two-game losing streak. Brooklyn had 73 first-half points and opened a 24-point lead during their highest-scoring first half at home in 17 years. The Nets made nine of their first 15 3-point attempts during their highest-scoring first half at home since getting 75 against Golden State on Feb. 19, 2002, back in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Despite playing without injured Caris LeVert, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Allen Crabbe, the Nets won for the seventh time in their last eight home games. They finished with seven players in double figures. Crabbe (knee) will be re-evaluated in 1-2 weeks. He has been diagnosed with a bruised fat pad in his right knee, which has caused the lingering soreness. Hollis-Jefferson has a groin injury and isn’t likely to play here. LeVert is a long way off.

D’Angelo Russell (rest) returned on Wednesday with a career-high-tying 13 assists, 22 points on 9-of-21 shooting, five rebounds, two steals, and one block. Russell got four days off due to his DNP on Saturday. He tied his career-high for assists in a single half (eight). His attack-first style has helped Brooklyn attempt a league-high 52.6 drives to the hoop per game this season.

Ed Davis returned from a rest day on Wednesday to post six points, 12 rebounds, two steals and one block in 17 minutes. The veteran got a night off on Saturday, which was the second night of a back-to-back set. Jarrett Allen posted his first double-double in two weeks on Wednesday with 10 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.

Why Bet on Memphis?

The Grizzlies lost their third in a row Wednesday, 101-94 vs. Detroit to fall back under .500. With a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter, the Pistons built a double-digit lead and snapped their three-game losing streak. Memphis has lost 10 of the last 13, leading to a lengthy postgame meeting in a closed locker room. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff took more than 30 minutes to emerge and address the media.

Garrett Temple and Omari Casspi reportedly got into a physical altercation during a team meeting following Wednesday’s loss to the Pistons. Tempers flared with Temple criticizing the second unit for a perceived lack of effort, and Casspi vociferously defending himself and the bench squad. Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace said there will be “internal discipline.” Neither is a major part of the team but suspensions, if any, could affect depth.

Mike Conley (left shoulder) had a forgettable game against the Pistons, missing all eight of his shots for zero points with three rebounds and one assist in 28 minutes of action. Conley hurt his shoulder in the first quarter in a collision with Andre Drummond, which was a big reason why he failed to score for the first time this season. It marked the first time Conley was held scoreless since Dec. 8, 2015, against Oklahoma City when he played 22 minutes. After the game, he said his shoulder stiffened up a bit and, while his strength was good, he struggled to do anything with his left arm. Conley’s status is why no opening line here.

Jaren Jackson Jr. was superb in the loss, scoring 26 points (8-of-11 FGs, 8-of-8 FTs) with 10 rebounds, two assists, and two 3-pointers in 35 minutes. It was only JJJ’s second double-double of the season and first since Nov. 12. The 35 minutes were the most he’s seen since an overtime game on Nov. 30 against Brooklyn.
