In the 2023 MLB All-Star Game in Seattle, the National League edged the American League 3-2 behind a late two-run homer from Rockies catcher Elias Diaz to snap a nine-game skid in the Midsummer Classic.
Can the NL make it back-to-back wins on Tuesday from Arlington, Texas? The AL is a short favorite on the MLB odds according to MyBookie Sportsbook and the designated home team.

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo is the manager of the NL All-Star team and chose Pittsburgh Pirates rookie righty Paul Skenes to start the game – which is pretty much what everyone wanted to see.
Paul is only 11 starts into his career and became the first No. 1 overall pick to start an All-Star Game the year after being drafted.
Skenes will become only the fifth rookie pitcher to start an All-Star Game since the event debuted in 1933 — and he’ll be the first to do so in nearly 30 years when Hideo Nomo started in 1995 also in Arlington.
Skenes only debuted with the Bucs this season on May 11 and has gone 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA and 89-to-13 K-to-BB ratio over his first 11 outings, securing the starting spot.
Those 11 starts tie Mark Fidrych (1976) for the fewest in a career entering an All-Star start, though Fidrych also had made two relief appearances.
Skenes will become the sixth-youngest pitcher to start the All-Star Game at 22 years and 48 days old, trailing only:
- Baltimore’s Jerry Walker (20.172 in 1959)
- Valenzuela (20.281 in 1981)
- Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets (21.241 in 1986)
- Fidrych (21.334 in 1976)
- Oakland’s Vida Blue (21.350 in 1971)
Skenes will become the fifth different pitcher in Pirates history to start the Midsummer Classic (sixth time overall), joining Bob Friend (1956, 1960 – Game 1); Vern Law (1960 – Game 2); Dock Ellis (1971); and Jerry Reuss (1975).
In his final start before the break, Skenes threw seven no-hit innings in Milwaukee with 11 strikeouts but was never going to be given the chance to go the distance this early in his career.
It wasn’t until the sixth or seventh inning when Skenes finally started to notice that he had a chance at history, partially because it was a tie game until Yasmani Grandal doubled home Jack Suwinski in the top of the seventh for the only run of the game.
It was Skenes’ his eighth straight start with at least seven strikeouts, the longest streak by a Pirates pitcher.
It was his second start of at least 11 strikeouts over six or more no-hit innings, joining Nolan Ryan as the only American/National League players to do that in the same season.
Ryan did it in 1973 and, it should be noted, he completed the no-hitter in both of those efforts.
With the Cubs’ Shota Imanaga and Skenes, this is just the 10th season with multiple rookie starting pitcher All-Stars in the game.
Add in Oakland’s Mason Miller, and it’s the seventh season with at least three rookie pitcher All-Stars, joining:
- 2019 John Means, Michael Soroka, Sandy Alcantara
- 2012 Wade Miley, Ryan Cook, Yu Darvish
- 2011 Jordan Walden, Aaron Crow, Craig Kimbrel, Michael Pineda
- 2003 Lance Carter, Mike MacDougal, Dontrelle Willis
- 1995 Carlos Perez, Tyler Green, Hideo Nomo
- 1955 Herb Score, Luis Arroyo, Sam Jones
The Phillies originally led the way with seven NL All-Stars — Jeff Hoffman, Matt Strahm, Ranger Suárez, Zack Wheeler, Alec Bohm, Bryce Harper and Trea Turner.
That’s their most in a season in franchise history, surpassing their prior best of five, done six times, most recently in 2011.
But Wheeler and Suarez will not be able to pitch and Phils lefty Cristopher Sanchez has since been added. The team will have 75 percent of the NL’s starting infield with Harper at first, Turner at short and Bohm at third.
Padres infielder Luis Arraez said he will not play in Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game because of an injured left thumb. Arraez was selected to the All-Star Game for a third consecutive season.
He made it with the Minnesota Twins in 2022 and the Miami Marlins in 2023. This season, Arraez is batting .310 with 122 hits, second in the majors to Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals, who has 125.
Arraez and the Yankees’ Juan Soto became the 9th and 10th players in MLB history to make an All-Star game in 3 straight seasons with 3 different teams. Soto will start for the AL.
^American League All Stars Moneyline -127
This marks the first time since 1939 and only the third time overall that a reigning World Series champion has hosted the Midsummer Classic (1934 Giants at the Polo Grounds, 1939 Yankees at Yankee Stadium).
AL manager Bruce Bochy of the Texas Rangers has chosen veteran Orioles righty Corbin Burnes as his starting pitcher – he’s the second favorite to win the AL Cy Young in his first season in the league.
The 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner has struck out more than 200 batters every season since then, and at the All-Star break this year, he’s got 110 strikeouts over 118 2/3 innings.
The 29-year-old Burnes has allowed just 37 runs (32 earned) on 99 hits with 25 walks and 110 strikeouts.
The 2.43 ERA for Burnes is the lowest for an Orioles pitcher through his first 19 starts of a season since Palmer had a 2.31 ERA through 19 starts in 1978.
In addition, it marks the lowest for any pitcher through the first 19 career starts with Baltimore in team history (since 1954).
He will become the fifth different Orioles pitcher (eighth time) to start the Midsummer Classic, and the first since Steve Stone started the All-Star Game during his 1980 Cy Young Award-winning season.
Other Orioles hurlers to start the Midsummer Classic include:
- Jerry Walker 1959
- Milt Pappas 1965
- Hall of Famer Jim Palmer 1970, 1972, 1977, 1978
Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez and Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve were selected to their ninth All-Star team in 2024, which is tied for third-most among active players with Justin Verlander and Craig Kimbrel.
The active leaders in All-Star selections are Mike Trout with 11 and Clayton Kershaw with 10. However, Altuve won’t play and was replaced in the starting lineup by the Rangers’ Marcus Semien.
The AL has lost a handful of good hitters to injuries or the like with Boston’s Rafael Devers, Minnesota’s Carlos Correa and Altuve’s teammate Kyle Tucker also out.
Correa was held out of Minnesota’s 3-2 loss at San Francisco on Sunday after undergoing an MRI which revealed plantar fasciitis in his right foot.
He has been replaced by Rangers shortstop Corey Seager.
Could we see home run history to start the game or end it? Five players have led off the All-Star Game with a home run: Lou Boudreau, Frankie Frisch, Bo Jackson, Willie Mays and Joe Morgan.
Three players have hit walk-off home runs in the All-Star Game: Ted Williams (1942), Stan Musial (1955) and Johnny Callison (1964).
A total of 10 straight All-Star Games have been decided by three or fewer runs and back-to-back All-Star Games (and 4 of the last 6) have been decided by one.
Three straight All-Star Games have not been decided by one run since 2006-09 (4 straight).
We wrote this preview ahead of Monday’s night’s Home Run Derby.
Two players have won the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game MVP in the same year: Cal Ripken Jr. in 1991 & Garrett Anderson in 2003.

National League vs American League Series History
The American League leads all-time 47-44-2. While it’s the first All-Star Game at Globe Life Field, Arlington hosts for the second time.
In 1995, the National League won 3-2 thanks to solo homers from Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza and Jeff Conine.
The two AL runs were from a two-run homer by Frank Thomas. Expect another low-scoring game Tuesday as six of the last seven All-Star Games overall have had fewer than 8 runs scored.

2023 All Star Game
The 93rd Major League Baseball All-Star Game is being played from T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Tuesday night and the American League is a short favorite to win its 10th straight Midsummer Classic over the National League despite being without such injured stars as Mike Trout, Aaron Judge and Yordan Alvarez. With that in mind, let’s see the MLB betting odds for this game.

Game History
This will be the third time that the Mariners host an All-Star Game; the previous games were in 1979 at the Kingdome and 2001 at Safeco Field, which was renamed T-Mobile Park before the 2019 season. The National League won 7-6 at the Kingdome and the AL won 4-1 at Safeco. The AL leads the series all-time 47-43 with two ties.
St. Petersburg, Fla. (Tampa Bay Rays) is the only current MLB city that has not yet hosted an All-Star Game. The game MVP is called the Ted Williams Award. Only two players have been selected MVP from the losing team: Brooks Robinson (1966) and Carl Yastrzemski (1970). No MVP Award was given in 2002. In the 58-year history of the award, five players have won the honor twice.
Why Bet on the National League?
The Dodgers and Braves account for two-thirds of the NL starting lineup, with each club having three of its members included. NL MVP favorite Ronald Acuna Jr. of Atlanta leads off. He on-pace for 39 home runs and 75 stolen bases this season. No player in MLB history has ever recorded 30+ home runs and 60+ stolen bases within a single-season. Acuna the N.L. in stolen bases and OPS and is seeking to become the third player since integration in 1947 to lead their league in both categories. He’d join: Willie Mays, twice (1957-58) and Rickey Henderson (1990).
How deep is the NL? MLB batting leader Luis Arraez of the Marlins has flirted with .400 all season and also recorded the first cycle in franchise history in just his 12th game in a Marlins uniform. Arraez’s performance made him an easy selection for his second straight Midsummer Classic, and his first as the starting second baseman. He bats sixth for the NL. The 26-year-old Arraez also could become the first player since 1900 to be the batting champion in the AL and NL in consecutive seasons.
Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll was voted a starter for this year’s Midsummer Classic, just one year after appearing in the Futures Game. Carroll is now one of 11 newcomers to a group of 222 players who have been selected to play in both the Futures Game and the Major League All-Star Game.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson is in charge of the NL All-Stars. Frankly, the NL is overdue a win in this game as it last beat the AL 8-0 in 2012 in Kansas City. The Braves topped the field with eight All-Star selections this year but not all of them will play. Those eight All-Stars were the most by any team since the 2012 Rangers also had eight.
The NL starting pitcher will be Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen. Gallen, who is tied for the Major League lead in wins, is 11-3 with a 3.04 ERA on the season. In 118.1 innings pitched, he has permitted 45 runs (40 earned) on 101 hits with 23 walks and 125 strikeouts. Gallen has also thrived following a loss by his club, going 7-0 with a 1.80 ERA on the season in 10 such starts.
The 27-year-old, who is an All-Star for the first time in his career, will become just the third D-backs hurler (fourth time) to start a Midsummer Classic, joining Hall of Famer Randy Johnson (2000-01) and Curt Schilling (2002).
- Ronald Acuña Jr., RF (ATL)
- Freddie Freeman, 1B (LAD)
- Mookie Betts, CF (LAD)
- J.D. Martinez, DH (LAD)
- Nolan Arenado, 3B (STL)
- Luis Arraez, 2B (MIA)
- Sean Murphy, C (ATL)
- Corbin Carroll, LF (AZ)
- Orlando Arcia, SS (ATL)

Why Bet on the American League?
Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker is in charge of the AL team and has selected the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole as his starting pitcher. It marks the first career All-Star start for the six-time All-Star. Cole will become the 12th different Yankees pitcher (20th time) to start the Midsummer Classic, and the first since Roger Clemens started the last All-Star Game played in Seattle during his Cy Young Award-winning 2001 season.
In 19 starts on the season, Cole is 9-2 with a 2.85 ERA. In 117.0 innings, Cole has allowed just 39 runs (37 earned) on 97 hits with 34 walks and 123 strikeouts. New York is 14-5 on the season in Cole’s 19 games started and the 14 victories are tied for the second-most by a club in a pitcher’s starts this season. In addition, the Yankees are 8-0 on the season in games started by Cole following a loss, and he is 5-0 with a 2.13 ERA in those eight starts.
Texas will become the first team in 47 years to have five position players start in the All-Star Game after the Rangers’ Adolis Garcia was picked Friday to join the AL lineup as an injury replacement. He and Baltimore Orioles outfielder Austin Hays were named as injury replacements for New York’s Aaron Judge and Los Angeles’ Mike Trout.
“That’s going to be cool. I’m happy and proud for these guys,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “I think it’s cool for Rangers fans to see their guys out there on the field. (Five) is a lot. It’ll be pretty cool to see. When you look at their numbers, they are all well deserving of being out there.”
The 1939 New York Yankees and the 1956, 1957 and 1976 Reds are the only other clubs to have that many in a single midsummer classic.
Garcia joins Rangers catcher Jonah Heim, second baseman Marcus Semien, shortstop Corey Seager and third baseman Josh Jung in the AL lineup for Tuesday’s game. The non-Rangers are Tampa Bay first baseman Yandy Díaz and outfielder Randy Arozarena, Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani and Hays.
- Marcus Semien, 2B (TEX)
- Shohei Ohtani, DH (LAA)
- Randy Arozarena, LF (TB)
- Corey Seager, SS (TEX)
- Yandy Díaz, 1B (TB)
- Adolis García, RF (TEX)
- Austin Hays, CF (BAL)
- Josh Jung, 3B (TEX)
- Jonah Heim, C (TEX)
