There used to be four preseason games to help coaches make roster decisions. However, with the last Collective Bargaining Agreement and the league now having 17 regular season games, the preseason schedule was cut from four to three games.

Most NFL fans don’t have an issue with that, as the fourth preseason game was used to make final roster decisions, as the starters usually didn’t play. In this week’s games, we could see a little more action from the team’s starters.

Each team plays this differently, so you never know who will be on the field. Let’s take a brief look at each of the four preseason games that will be played on Friday, August 26th so you can bet against their NFL Preseason Odds.

Final Week of the 2022 Preseason Action | NFL Betting Picks and Analysis

Buffalo Bills @ Carolina Panthers

There was big news out of Panthers camp this week, as Baker Mayfield was named the starting quarterback. Mayfield and many of the other Panthers starters could see some action in this week’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule has said that whether or not the starters play will be on a “case by case” basis. As of now, it doesn’t look like Christian McCaffrey will see any action in this one. McCaffrey has struggled with injuries early in his career, and the Panthers don’t want to take any chances.

The Bills haven’t announced if their starters will play or not, but we don’t think that Josh Allen will see much action. Allen and his starting receivers have looked to be in sync throughout the preseason, which doesn’t bode well for the rest of the NFL.

New England Patriots @ Las Vegas Raiders

The big news out of the Patriots camp is how lackluster the offense has looked thus far. Even though Mac Jones has slimmed down and worked hard, the offense just hasn’t clicked. We’re still not sure who is running the Patriots offense, as both Joe Judge and Matt Patricia have called plays this preseason.

Not surprisingly, Bill Belichick hasn’t given us much to go by regarding who is actually in charge of the offense.

On the Raiders side, Davante Adams and Derek Carr have been a lethal combination thus far in camp. Look for good things from them this season.

Los Angeles Chargers @ New Orleans Saints

Jameis Winston has been back practicing with the Saints this week, so things are looking up. Backup quarterback Andy Dalton has taken a majority of the first team snaps thus far in camp, but Winston is the starter. We should see him in action on Friday night.

As for the Chargers, Brandon Staley remains firm that almost, if not all, of his starters, won’t play in the preseason. The Chargers do have some position battles to settle, so we ultimately could see a few starters get a series or two on Friday.

Seattle Seahawks @ Dallas Cowboys

We still have a fierce quarterback competition in Seattle between Drew Lock and Geno Smith. Smith started the first preseason game, while Lock was slated to start last week. However, Lock missed the game due to Covid.

Lock will likely get the start on Friday night, and according to Seattle head coach Pete Carroll, he’ll see a significant amount of playing time.

Green Bay Packers -1.5 at Kansas City Chiefs | Thursday, August 25

The Green Bay Packers head to Kansas City knowing exactly what they want to accomplish. So do the Chiefs. The difference in this matchup is that Green Bay’s backup quarterback, Jordan Love, is likely to play better than Kansas City’s backup.

Then again, the Packers may keep Jordan on the bench. There’s no use playing Love because Matt LaFleur already knows his depth chart. KC is worth backing.

San Francisco 49ers -3.5 at Houston Texans | Thursday, August 25

The odds don’t make a lot of sense. Trey Lance isn’t likely to play. Nor is Jimmy Garoppolo. The last thing the Niners want to do is hurt Jimmy G. and miss out on a possible trade.

At this point, San Francisco would take a fifth round pick before cutting Garoppolo. The Texans aren’t a great team and the bench is light on talent, but Houston can win at home.

The odds suggest what all of us know. The Panthers figure to play Sam Darnold for the entire game while the Bills throw in the third string.

Buffalo won’t take the chance of any injuries, zero, to their first string or even second string. Carolina should cover this spread.

Seattle Seahawks -4 at Dallas Cowboys | Friday, August 26

The Cowboys will use the third NFL preseason game to get communication down and to make sure their second string and third string players are ready.

Seattle will play both Drew Lock and Geno Smith because Pete Carroll said the Seahawks may play with a couple of starting quarterbacks this season.

Los Angeles Chargers at New Orleans Saints -3 | Friday, August 26

The Chargers have no desire to play any of their starters. So the Bolts figure to rest the entire starting lineup on both sides of the ball and rest key second string players.

The Saints will do the same. The difference is that this happens in New Orleans and the Saints are deeper at most positions. New Orleans wins and covers.

Bill doesn’t push his team in any preseason game but he really lays off in the third contest. Belichick doesn’t care that former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels coaches the Raiders.

He won’t try to win this game. The Raiders grab the victory and cover by default.

If you are anything like me, you are probably ready for the end of preseason and the start of the regular season. The games through the first 2 weeks of the preseason have been highly unpredictable, which is exactly what you would expect. The harsh reality is that the best players on evert team don’t see much action, while the play calling is vanilla across the board. We might see some more of the starters in the final week of preseason action, but I wouldn’t count on it. As always, we are going to pick some winners and losers for the coming week, but we again have to say that you should be careful when wagering on these games, as you never really know what you are going to get. Sure Winners Preseason Week 4 | 2022 NFL Betting Analysis

Buffalo Bills over Carolina Panthers

The Bills will head into the regular season as the favorite to win the Super Bowl and are showing that they mean business even in the preseason. They have won both their games to this point and have amassed 69 points in those outings, more than any other team in the league. They will close out the preseason on the road at the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers have announced that Baker Mayfield will be their starting QB this season, so I would think he will get some time in the final preseason game. I don’t think that’ll make too much of a difference, as I like the Bills to roll again.

Baltimore Ravens over Washington Commanders

We always say that you should never get too carried away when watching the preseason games, but even though these games are meaningless, there are some cool trends that could have an impact on how you wager. If you have made a habit of playing the Baltimore Ravens to win in the preseason, you are probably sitting on a nice little wad of cash at the moment. They come into the final matchup on a 22-game winning streak in the preseason. That is a ridiculous record, to the point that it is tough to even consider betting against them. You have to like their chances again this week against the Commanders, who have struggled in the preseason, going 0-2 and managing just 35 points in those 2 games. I’m on the Ravens to make it preseason win #23 in a row.

Pittsburgh Steelers over Detroit Lions

While not quite in full rebuild mode, the Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into the new season with their QB status up in the air. The Big Ben era is over and there is a battle going on for the #1 spot in the Steel City. The good news for the Steelers is that all 3 guys on their roster have looked very good in the preseason, helping the Steelers get to a 2-0 record. They will try to end the preseason with a perfect record, which could make the job of picking the starter a little bit tougher. They will close out at home to the Detroit Lions, who have shown some positive signs over the past couple of weeks. I still like the Steelers to get the job done in their own building.

In the grand scheme of things, wins and losses don’t mean anything in the preseason. I certainly wouldn’t mention that to the guys fighting for a roster spot heading into the final week of the preseason schedule. There are going to be a number of players who are on the bubble at the moment and who are fighting to stay with the starters. That alone tends to make the final batch of preseason games a little more intense, plus we will probably get to see more of the starters as they get ready for the start of the regular season. All of that said, it is still difficult to routinely pick winners in the preseason, but we are going to give it one more shot as we prepare for the bigger games to come. For the purposes of this piece, we are going to look at 3 teams who we believe will lose this weekend so you can bet against their NFL Preseason Odds.

Houston Texans Vs San Francisco 49ers

In San Francisco, the 49ers are preparing to start the season with Trey Lance under center. Like it or not, this is his team now, with Jimmy G still looking for a place to land as opposed to holding a clipboard on the sidelines. The 49ers have been solid in their first 2 preseason games, winning both and looking stout on the defensive side of the football. That could prove to be a problem for a Houston Texans team that is probably going to have a rather miserable season. They have, though, won both of their preseason games, and while I shouldn’t totally write them off in this one, especially since they are playing at home, I still think they are going to be outmatched versus a very good 49ers team.

Seattle Seahawks Vs Dallas Cowboys

Speaking of Jimmy Garoppolo, there is still a belief that he might make his way to Seattle, especially when you consider that the Seahawks are 0-2 in the preseason and have managed just 36 points in those 2 outings. The fans are growing restless in Seattle and a move for a proven QB might just help alleviate some of the stress that they are currently feeling. Their final game will take them to Dallas to face the Cowboys, who have split their 2 games to this point. They did not look good in Week 1, taking a ton of penalties, but they were more disciplined in their 2nd game and should be ready to take another step forward this week. I am all over the Cowboys in this one.

Minnesota Vikings Vs Denver Broncos

We have always said that it’s not a good idea to put too much stock in what happens in the preseason, but there has to be some cause for concern for fans of the Vikings. Not only are they 0-2 through the opening 2 games, they have also seen their offense fail to deliver the goods. Minnesota has managed just 27 points in those 2 losses and now need to go on the road to a stadium that is always tough to play in. The Broncos haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire, but I expect more out of them in their final preseason outing.

2019 NFL Preseason Week 4 Odds, Overview & Picks

Pittsburgh Steelers at Carolina Panthers

When: Thursday, 7 PM ET
TV: NFL Network

As noted above, no key starters are going to play for either team, but even if this was a different week of the preseason, Carolina’s Cam Newton wouldn’t be playing. That’s because in last Thursday’s 10-3 loss at New England, Newton left with a foot injury that nearly torpedoed the Panthers’ season. However, Newton was expected to return to practice in some capacity on Monday. His injury is being called a mid-foot sprain.

GM Marty Hurney remains confident he’ll be ready for Week 1 against the Rams. Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke and rookie Will Grier should be the guys who play in this one. Star running back Christian McCaffrey was pulled the moment Newton was injured and ruled out for the rest of the game.

Panthers second-round offensive tackle Greg Little (concussion) was carted off the field Thursday in the loss. Carolina weighed taking Little No. 16 overall, but eventually traded up to nab him in the second once he slipped through the cracks. He was projected to protect Cam Newton’s blindside next to LG Daryl Williams, C Matt Paradis, RG Trai Turner, and RT Taylor Moton up front.

The Steelers are 3-0 this preseason after an 18-6 win in Tennessee on Sunday night. Roethlisberger completed 8-of-13 passes for 63 yards and one touchdown. Last year, Roethlisberger set career-highs in passing yards (5,129) and passing touchdowns (34) while leading the NFL in pass attempts (675). James Conner rushed for 41 yards on five carries and caught both of his targets in the Steelers’ third preseason game.

These teams now play in the preseason finale every year. Last year, Pittsburgh was a 39-24 home winner. Joshua Dobbs threw for a score and ran for one. He’s currently battling Mason Rudolph for the backup job to Big Ben.

These teams also played last regular season. The Panthers looked like a Super Bowl contender entering it the Week 10 matchup but were crushed 52-21 and were never the same after – neither was Newton. Roethlisberger threw for 328 yards and five touchdowns, while Conner ran for 65 yards and a score. Antonio Brown added eight receptions for 96 yards — including a 53-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Of course, he’s now with Oakland. Carolina fell to 0-4 all-time in Pittsburgh in the regular season and was never really in it after the Steelers scored 21 points in the game’s first 11 minutes.

Indianapolis Colts at Cincinnati Bengals

When: Thursday, 7 PM ET

Well, we for sure know that Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck won’t be playing because he stunned the world over the weekend by retiring at age 29. The Colts played their third preseason game Saturday night in Indianapolis against the Chicago Bears. Luck already had been ruled out of the game because of an ankle injury, but he was seen on the sideline, laughing and conversing with teammates.

After the game, Luck announced his decision during an impromptu 25-minute news conference. He said an official announcement wasn’t planned until Sunday afternoon, but he changed course once news broke during the game. Luck was just too physically beaten up over the years. He ended up missing 26 games — including the entire 2017 season — because of shoulder, kidney and rib injuries. This year, he had been dealing with a lower leg injury. Luck is leaving $58.1 million in salary on the table by calling it quits, but said injuries had taken the joy out of playing.

The Colts have reached a financial settlement with Luck, the former No. 1 overall pick. The Colts could have recouped $24.8 million from Luck—a prorated $12.8 million from his signing bonus and another $12 million in roster bonuses—but instead the team is letting him keep it all. Jacoby Brissett will be the Colts’ Week 1 starter. A 16-game starter during Luck’s 2017 absence with a shoulder injury, Brissett completed fewer than 60 percent of his passes while averaging 6.6 yards per attempt. Doubt that Brissett plays in this one.

Cincinnati is 1-2 this preseason following a 25-23 loss to the Giants last week. The team remains without star receiver AJ Green following ankle surgery and he’ll miss at least Week 1 of the regular season. Fellow receiver John Ross just returned to practice from a hamstring injury.

Andy Dalton completed 7-of-10 passes for 104 yards and one touchdown in the Bengals‘ third preseason game against the Giants. The Bengals’ starters played three series, with the first two stalling miserably before getting things going on the third and marching down the field into the end zone. Dalton finishes the preseason 19-of-28 for 220 yards and a 1:1 TD:INT mark.

To help you in your quest for success, I’ve got a trio of NFL Preseason Week 4 sure losers that are highlighted by both teams that participated in last season’s thrilling Super Bowl 52 showdown. Sure 2018 NFL Preseason Week 4 Losers

New York Jets (1-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (0-3)

When: Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
NFL Preseason Week 4 Odds: NY Jets -2 / Total: 37

The Jets came up just short in their 22-16 Week 3 preseason loss to the Giants on Friday, but rookie quarterback Sam Darnold may have solidified his grip on the starting quarterback position even in defeat after going 8 for 16 for 86 yards with one touchdown and no picks.

“So far, I think I’ve been really consistent,” Darnold said. “At the same time, obviously there’s little things I can always get better at.”

The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles really haven’t looked motivated this preseason and fell to 0-3 by losing to Cleveland 5-0 last Thursday. Veteran quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles saw his preseason struggles continue as he tossed two costly interceptions in the loss.

“There are times where I’m feeling good, but I’m making some mistakes,” Foles said. “It’s as simple as that.

Prediction

The Eagles have nothing to play for in this meaningless matchup while the Jets almost certainly want to build some positive momentum prior to the start of the regular season.

I’m going with New York’s Sam Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater and possibly Josh McCown to outplay Foles and talented third string signal-caller Nate Sudfeld to get the win in this preseason finale. The Eagles had their nine-game home preseason winning streak snapped in their humbling 31-14 Week 1 preseason loss to Pittsburgh and I believe they’re just not going to play very hard in a game that means absolutely nothing for them.

NFL Preseason Week 4 Pick: Jets 20 Eagles 17

Cleveland Browns (2-1) at Detroit Lions (1-2)

When: Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan
NFL Preseason Week 4 Odds: Detroit -2 / Total: 36

Cleveland struggled offensively, but the Browns played some excellent defense to get past Philadelphia 5-0 in Week 3. Veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor completed 11 of 16 passes for 65 yards and rookie No. 1 overall draft pick Baker Mayfield completed 8 of 12 for 76 yards. Taylor injured his hand before coming back for a brief stint. Mayfield was checked for a concussion in the second half and tossed a costly interception in the win.

“I was very concerned, but I wouldn’t have put him back in if I didn’t think he was fine,” Jackson said. “We’ll continue to look at it and see where we are going into next week.”

“Not my best game by any means,” Mayfield said. “I’m disappointed in myself. I got in there with the first team and I’ve got to get the ball out quickly. Not my best game at all.”

Detroit got their first win of the preseason under new head coach Matt Patricia by downing Tampa Bay 33-30 in a shootout. Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford went 9 of 18 for 113 yards, but it was backups Matt Cassel and Jake Rudock that led Detroit to victory by combining to go 16 for 23 with one TD pass apiece and no interceptions.

Prediction

It’s all fine and well that Detroit got their first win of the preseason the last time out, but the party’s over for the Lions right about now.

First of all, I’m not particularly fond of Detroit’s hiring of Patricia. The Lions are 0-2 SU in their last two preseason home games and just 2-3 SU over their last five. More importantly, I like Cleveland’s situation at backup quarterback way more than I do Detroit’s and that’s the main reason I’m going to urge you to back the revamped Browns in this one.

NFL Preseason Week 4 Pick: Browns 23 Lions 21

New England Patriots (2-1) at New York Giants (2-1)

When: Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey
NFL Preseason Week 4 Odds: NY Giants -2.5 / Total: 38.5

New England got manhandled in their 25-14 Week 3 preseason loss to Carolina on Friday as future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady went 12 for 18 for 102 yards and backup Brian Hoyer went 16 for 24 for 109 yards. A handful of mistakes cost the Pats big-time in the loss.

“Our execution needs to be better,” Brady said. “You look back at a lot of the things and it’s a lot of us. It’s not so much what the other team is doing.”

The Giants improved to 2-1 on the preseason by getting past the New York Jets 22-16 last week as veteran quarterback Eli Manning completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard had seven catches for 78 yards in the win.

“I thought we did a couple of good things,” Manning said. “Obviously, we’d like to score more when we get into the red zone down there. I thought there were a lot of good things and we moved the ball pretty well.”

Prediction

The Giants have split their last four home preseason games while going 1-3 ATS along the way. Over their last nine home preseason contests, New York is 5-4 SU and 3-5-1 ATS. More importantly for this contest, the New England Patriots have absolutely nothing left to play for. New York will be looking to get the confidence-boosting win in this preseason finale and I think they can, although I’m still not quite sure that backup Davis Webb is going to be the long-term answer for the Giants behind Eli Manning. Ultimately, this game is ‘super meaningless’ for the Pats, making the Giants the pick to win and cash in!

Two unbeaten AFC-based playoff hopefuls highlights my trio of Week 4 sure winner picks. With kickoff times quickly approaching for all four matchups, let’s get started with these NFL preseason odds.

Washington Redskins (1-2) at Baltimore Ravens (4-0)

When: Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:30 PM ET
Where: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Maryland
NFL Preseason Week 4 Odds: Baltimore -3.5 / Total: 36.5

The Washington Redskins have a new starting quarterback in veteran Alex Smith, but they haven’t looked very impressive this preseason.

On the flip side of the coin, the Baltimore Ravens have looked mostly fantastic in winning all four of their preseason games.

Washington got smacked around in their 29-17 Week 3 preseason loss to Denver the last time out with Smith going just 3 for 8 for 33 yards. The only good news coming out of their Week 3 loss was the performance of veteran running back Adrian Peterson who they signed just last week to help them deal with their shortcomings at the position. Peterson who rushed 11 times for 56 yards.

“He surely doesn’t look like he lost a step,” left tackle Trent Williams said of his friend and former college teammate. “I can tell you that much.”

The Ravens rolled all over Miami in their 27-10 Week 3 win despite the fact that starting quarterback Joe Flacco never suited up. Rookie signal-caller Lamar Jackson had his best preseason game by going 7 of 10 for 98 yards and one touchdown while rushing three times for 39 yards and another score.

“My decision-making is getting better,” Jackson said. “I’m working my way up. I feel like I’m doing pretty good, but there’s still room for improvement.”

Prediction

Keep it simple people and back Baltimore to win and cash in. The Ravens are the better team on both sides of the ball and they also have the coaching advantage.

Baltimore is 6-0 SU in their last six home preseason games and nine of their last 10. The Ravens are also 5-1 ATS in their last six home preseason games, making them a virtual lock in my opinion!

NFL Preseason Week 4 Pick: Baltimore 28 Washington 20

Miami Dolphins (0-3) at Atlanta Falcons (0-3)

When: Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia
NFL Preseason Week 4 Odds: Atlanta -2.5 / Total: 36.5

Miami got a decent performance out of veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but the Fins never came close to beating Baltimore in their 27-10 preseason loss on Saturday to fall to a winless 0-3. Atlanta has looked even worse and put up little fight in their humbling 17-6 Week 3 loss at Jacksonville. Veteran quarterback Matt Ryan was limited to a modest 5 of 12 day for 57 yards in the loss.

“When you’re going against a good defense, that’s how the game is going to shake out,” Ryan said. “You’re going to have your opportunities at times to make plays. I don’t think we came away with all of them, but we certainly made some good ones as well.”

Prediction

While Atlanta has looked pretty damned incompetent this scrimmage season, I like the Falcons to get the big, confidence-boosting win in their preseason finale.

The Falcons have lost three consecutive preseason games at home and are an uninspiring 0-4 ATS in their last four home scrimmage dates. Still though, the Dolphins just don’t have the talent on either side of the ball to beat an Atlanta team I think will be going all out to get the win in their preseason finale.

Indianapolis Colts (2-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (3-0)

When: Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: Paul Brown Stadium, Cincinnati, Ohio
NFL Preseason Week 4 Odds: Cincinnati -1.5 / Total: 35

Indianapolis beat San Francisco 23-17 on Saturday to improve to 2-1 on the preseason as franchise quarterback Andrew Luck completed 8 of 10 passes for 90 yards and one touchdown.

“I really wanted to feel like we created some type of rhythm and we did,” Luck said afterward. “We put a sustained drive together, and the other ones, we made some mistakes. But getting in rhythm was something I really wanted to see.”

Cincinnati improved to an unblemished 3-0 on the preseason by manhandling Buffalo en route to a convincing 26-13 Week 3 win on Sunday as quarterback Andy Dalton completed 11 of 16 passes for 180 yards with two touchdowns. Defensively, Cincinnati overpowered Buffalo by recording five sacks on rookie signal-caller Josh Allen while also sacking Nathan Peterman and A.J. McCarron once apiece.

“It was a good day. I think the way it started was the best part,” Dalton said. “The game went well, too.”

Prediction

I like the Indianapolis Colts and I love backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett. However, for this preseason finale, I’m going to urge you to back the Cincinnati Bengals to win and cover the chalk. Cincy has a big edge on defense and in the coaching department. The Bengals have gone 2-1 SU and ATS in their last three home preseason games and I think head coach Marvin Lewis wants to finish the preseason in style.

Winning Record Matters

OK, there is one thing you should look for this week: any teams that are 1-2 need a victory to win Super Bowl LIII. What, you say? Each of the past 10 Super Bowl winners had at least a .500 record in the preseason, believe it or not. That last that didn’t was the 2007 New York Giants, who were a surprise Super Bowl winner. That club was just 9-7 in the regular season and then won each NFC playoff game on the road as a wild-card team before upsetting the unbeaten New England Patriots in one of the biggest Super Bowl upsets ever.

So, I guess that means these teams can’t win this year’s Super Bowl because they are 0-3 this preseason: Dolphins, Titans, Cowboys, the defending champion Eagles, Falcons and Seahawks. I realistically only give Philadelphia and Atlanta Super Bowl chances this year.

I can also give you plenty of reasons why a preseason record doesn’t matter. The Browns’ 4-0 preseason record last marked the first time since 1986 that the team went undefeated during the preseason. Before 2017, the Browns had only gone undefeated during the preseason four other times in franchise history (1950, 1962, 1982, 1986), and the team finished each of those seasons with a winning record. As a matter of fact, the Browns actually made the playoffs in three of those four seasons and even went on to win a world championship in 1950.

Of course, we all know that the 2017 Browns then became the second team in NFL history to go 0-16 in the regular season.

National TV Games

The two nationally televised games this week, both on the NFL Network, are Browns at Lions at 7 p.m. ET Thursday and Broncos at Cardinals at 10 p.m. ET.

Will we see Browns rookie No. 1 overall pick and Heisman winner Baker Mayfield in the game?

He’s not starting Week 1 – that job belongs to Tyrod Taylor. So while Taylor surely sits here, Mayfield should play a decent amount. The Cleveland Browns had the ugliest preseason victory in years last week, 5-0 over the Eagles. Yes, 5-0.

Mayfield was 8-for-12 for 76 yards passing and one interception in the win. Mayfield was slated to play in just the second half, but saw two series with the first-team offense while Taylor was out of the game during the first quarter having his dislocated pinkie put back in place. Against the first-team Eagles defense, Mayfield was 2-for-4 for 19 yards and took a sack. Mayfield was cleared after being evaluated in the fourth quarter for a concussion, but did not play the final two series. Mayfield will reportedly start this game, and Coach Hue Jackson said Mayfield could play “quite a bit.” He will be on the field alongside second- and third-stringers.

There’s no chance the Detroit Lions start No. 1 QB Matthew Stafford. In last week’s 33-30 win in Tampa, Stafford completed 9-of-18 passes for 113 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Stafford had thrown just five passes in the preseason entering the game, so Detroit wanted to give him some work, letting him play into the third quarter.

NFL Preseason Week 4 Pick: Cleveland is a 2.5-point favorite.

In Denver-Arizona, how much will we see Cardinals rookie QB Josh Rosen?

The former UCLA star did not play in the Arizona Cardinals‘ third preseason game. Rosen picked up a thumb injury when he hit his hand against a teammate’s helmet during practice last week. The injury does not appear serious, but coach Steve Wilks has yet to determine if the rookie will play in the preseason finale on Thursday.

Wilks said that he doesn’t want Rosen to lose the progress he’s made this summer, but the deciding factor in this decision will nonetheless be the status of his thumb. Rosen will open the season behind Sam Bradford on the depth chart. Against the Saints in the second preseason game, Rosen completed 10 of 16 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

The Denver Broncos has no QB battle as it’s Case Keenum’s job. Keenum completed 12-of-18 passes for 148 yards in the Broncos’ third preseason game. Keenum was sharp, leading three scoring drives on Denver’s first four possessions. Keenum isn’t playing here. Second-year Chad Kelly will start Thursday and probably play the first half. The Mississippi product has completed 28-of-41 passes for 340 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Kelly has posted a 107.8 quarterback rating across those three games. Third-string quarterback Paxton Lynch is slotted to play the second half.

For me, I like the Over as the top pick, seeing as how both, Tennessee and Miami have veteran backup quarterbacks that will likely take full advantage of the backup defenders they’ll be going up against. I’m also going to say the value in this affair lies with a Tennessee team that has looked mostly phenomenal this preseason.

NY Jets at Philadelphia (-4)

When: Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 7:00 PM
Where: Lincoln Financial Field
Over/Under: 39

Analysis: The New York Jets will look to rebound after suffering back-to- back preseason losses, including their heartbreaking 21-20 loss to the New York Giants the last time out. Backup quarterback Christian Hackenberg passed for 105 yards and one touchdown in the loss. Hackenberg and fellow backup Geno Smith will split the time under center in this contest.

The Philadelphia Eagles look to finish the preseason with a perfect 4-0 record after laying a 33-23 beatdown on the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3 behind Sam Bradford’s 167 passing yards and two touchdowns. Backup Chase Daniel will likely get the start in this affair. For me, I think Philly signal-caller Chase Daniel is the best backup quarterback in this contest and he’ll show just that while leading Philadelphia to the home win and narrow ATS cover.

My Pick: Philadelphia 24 NY Jets 20

Houston (-1) at Dallas

When: Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 8:00 PM
Where: AT&T Stadium
Over/Under: 37

Analysis: The Houston Texans will look to finish the preseason unbeaten after pounding the snot out of the Arizona Cardinals in their 34-24 Week 3 preseason win. New starting quarterback Brock Osweiler led the Texans to victory with 146 passing yards and one touchdown. Backup Tom Savage will likely get the start in this contest.

The Dallas Cowboys will look to finish the preseason at 2-2 following their costly 27-17 Week 3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks that saw Tony Romo go down with another injury. Impressive rookie backup Dak Prescott passed for 117 passing yards and one touchdown in the loss and will likely play at least a half in this affair.

For me, the value in this affair lies with the Dallas Cowboys, mostly because I think they’re going to go after the win far more than Houston, which just wants to get out of this meaningless affair uninjured.

Analysis: The Los Angeles Rams will look to win their third game of the preseason following their 17-9 loss to Denver in Week 3. Veteran Case Keenum passed for 77 yard in the loss. Backups, Sean Mannion and Jared Goff will split time under center in this contest.

The Minnesota Vikings will look to finish the preseason unbeaten after beating San Diego 23-10 in Week 3 behind Teddy Bridgewater’s 161 passing yards and one touchdown. Backups, Joel Stave and Shaun Hill will split time under center. With Bridgewater suffering a serious injury this week, I suspect all head coach Mike Zimmer wants to accomplish in this affair is to escape unscathed, making the Los Angeles Rams the pick to get their first preseason win and cover the spread in the process.

Analysis: The San Francisco 49ers will look to rebound from their humbling 21-10 Week 3 loss to Green Bay that saw backup Driskel limited to just 43 passing yards on four completions. Driskel and Christian Ponder will split time under center in this affair. The San Diego Chargers will look to rebound from their 23-10 Week 3 preseason loss to Minnesota that saw Kellen Clemens pass for just 77 yards on nine completions. Clemens and Mike Bercovici will split time under center in this preseason finale.

I think the best pick for this preseason finale is to simply play the Over. Neither one of these teams plays much, if any, defense. With a ton of backups playing for both sides, I like this contest to turn into a sloppy, fairly high-scoring affair that easily tops the 40- point O/U total.
