We are now just one day away from the official start of the 2021 NFL season, which is fantastic news for those of us who live and breathe football. Thursday night will see the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a party that they hope will end with a win over the Dallas Cowboys. I would certainly bet on that happening, but I am not including that pick in our SU picks for Week 1 of the season. I like to go with games that the bookies see as a little tighter than most, as it helps with the potential ROI, especially of you are playing a parlay. You could, of course, put a game that looks like a lock in there to help with your chances of cashing out, which is not a bad idea in the early part of the season. With that in mind, let’s get to our SU picks for Week 1 so you can get ready to make your bets against the NFL odds.

NFL Betting | Straight-Up Picks for Week 1 of the 2021 Season

Carolina Panthers over New York Jets

Given how these two teams have performed over the last few seasons, this might be a game that you might ordinarily pass on. Former Jets QB Sam Darnold making his debut for the Panthers against his old team makes it a bit of a must watch. While Darnold struggled in New York, the reality is that he did not exactly have a supporting cast helping him out. He has a ton more weapons in Carolina, including Christian McCaffrey, who is healthy and ready to go. The Jets will have their rookie QB making his first ever NFL start, which is a bonus for a Panthers defense that looks pretty weak. The Panthers are better than the Jets on the offensive side of the football, which should make the difference here. Carolina is also 7-0 SU in their last 7 versus teams from the NFC East.

Atlanta Falcons over Philadelphia Eagles

Both of these teams can be considered to be in a rebuilding or transitional phase, so it’s tough to know what to really expect from either of them. The Falcons were rumored to be moving on from Matt Ryan in the offseason, but the veteran QB is back, albeit without Julio Jones as a target. In Philly, they have opted to give the starting job to Jalen Hurts, who certainly looked the part at times last season. That said, the Eagles look to have holes on both sides of the football. I don’t see either of these teams as viable playoff contenders but getting off to a winning start might help build some confidence. I am giving the slight edge to Atlanta at home here.

Denver Broncos over New York Giants

This is another matchup that doesn’t exactly jump off the page when looking at the schedule, but I still think it offers a good SU betting opportunity. Not entirely pleased with what they saw from Drew Lock, the Broncos went out and acquired the services of Teddy Bridgewater, who looked very good on a very weak Panthers team last season. In New York, this might prove to be a make-or-break year for QB Daniel Green. He should have Saquon Barkley back on Sunday, but there are still some doubts as to how much playing time the RB might see in Week 1. I think the Broncos just have a little advantage on the offense, which is why I am on them to win.

2019 NFL Week 1 SU Betting Picks

Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles

When: Sunday September 8, 2019, 1:00 PM ET | FOX
Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA
NFL Week 1 Odds: Philadelphia -8.5 / Total: 45.5

The Commanders are looking to improve on their mediocre 7-9 campaign from a year ago, but Washington has some real question marks on both sides of the ball and at the game’s most important position where they’ll go with uninspiring veteran Case Keenum, mostly because Colt McCoy is injured and gifted rookie Dwayne Haskins isn’t quite ready to take over just yet. Unfortunately, Keenum struggled in the preseason as Washington went 1-3 while getting held to 19 points or less in every contest.

For Philadelphia, the Eagles will enter the 2019 season as one of the top Super Bowl contenders in either conference after winning it all two years ago and following that up with another playoff appearance last season. Philadelphia went 1-3 in the preseason while playing it safe with franchise quarterback Carson Wentz who will look to get back to his pre-injury form of two seasons ago when he was on track to potentially win the league’s MVP award.

NFL Week 1 SU Prediction

The Eagles are the completely better team on both sides of the ball and I have absolutely n doubt that the Birds will take care of business at home against Washington. Philadelphia has gone a blistering 16-4 SU in its last 20 home games while also taking four of the last five meetings against Washington overall.

The Redskins have dropped eight of their last 12 road games and they’ve got too much uncertainty to be expected to beat a team of Philadelphia’s caliber. This one will be a walk in the park for the Super Bowl-hopeful Eagles!

Pick: Philadelphia 31 Washington 20

Cincinnati Bengals at Seattle Seahawks

When: Sunday September 8, 2019, 4:05 PM ET | CBS
Where: CenturyLink Field, Seattle, WA
NFL Week 1 Odds: Seattle -9.5 / Total: 43.5

Cincinnati will be looking to improve on last season’s 6-10 mark under former head coach Marvin Lewis when they take to the field for their first regular season game under Zac Taylor. Unfortunately, the Bengals didn’t look very good in going 1-3 in the preseason as they look to improve on their uninspiring 30th place finish in points allowed last season (28.4 ppg) and modest 17th place finish in scoring (23.0 ppg).

For Seattle, Russell Wilson and company are looking to go a bit further than they did last season when they went a surprising 10-6 to reach the playoffs in what was supposed to a ‘rebuilding’ campaign. The Seahawks finished an impressive sixth in scoring (26.8 ppg) and 11t in points allowed (21.7 ppg) while also ranking first in rushing by averaging a stellar 160.0 yards per game on the ground.

NFL Week 1 SU Prediction

With the Seahawks looking solid in the preseason (3-1) and having the big advantage on both sides of the ball in this Week 1 mismatch, I have no doubt that Russell Wilson and company are the pick to get the outright SU win.

While the Bengals are a surprising 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six regular season openers, Seattle has won five straight at home. The Seahawks are a legitimate Super Bowl contender in the NFC even if no one is talking about it right now while Cincy is just looking to get back to being a respectable team in 2019. This one’s a lock. Seattle wins easily!

Pick: Seattle 28 Cincinnati 17

Los Angeles Rams at Carolina Panthers

When: Sunday September 8, 2019, 1:00 PM (EDT) | FOX
Where: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
NFL Week 1 Odds: LA Rams -3 / Total: 50.5

Jared Goff and the Rams are coming off a fine, 13-3 season a year ago that saw them reach Super Bowl 53 and although they came up short in their quest to win it all last season, Los Angeles will enter the 2019 campaign as one of the top contenders to repeat as NFC champs at the very least. The Rams went 2-2 in the preseason and they finished the 2018 campaign ranked a stellar second in scoring (32.9 ppg) although they do need to improve a defense that finished 20th in points allowed (24.0 ppg).

For Carolina, Cam Newton and the Panthers will be looking to bounce back from the uninspiring 7-9 mark they posted in 2018. Carolina finished 14th in scoring (23.5 ppg) and 19th in points allowed last season (23.9 ppg), but Newton suffered an ankle injury in the preseason and he might not be quite 100 percent when this game kicks off.

NFL Week 1 SU Prediction

The Panthers lost seven of their final eight games last season and although Carolina has gone an encouraging 10-3 SU in their last 13 home games, I don’t think they’re going to have quite enough offensive firepower to keep pace with a Rams team that should be as dangerous offensively as they’ve been in each of the last two seasons under wunderkind head coach Sean McVay. The Rams have won 10 of their last doze road dates and I say they get the narrow SU win in this week 1 pairing despite being on the road.

Pick: LA Rams 27 Carolina 23

Could the Cleveland Browns pull off an even bigger upset by beating the Super Bowl hopeful Pittsburgh Steelers in their AFC North divisional showdown? Last but certainly not least, is it possible that ‘Jimmy G’ and the San Francisco 49ers could pull off the potential upset over another legitimate Super Bowl contender when they visit the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1?

2018 NFL Week 1 SU Odds & Picks

Buffalo Bills at Baltimore Ravens

When: Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 1:00 PM ET
Where: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Maryland
NFL Week 1 Odds: Baltimore -7 / Total: 40.5

The Bills went 2-2 in the preseason by beating Cleveland and Chicago in Weeks 1 and 3 and losing to Carolina and Cincinnati in Weeks 2 and 4. Still, they didn’t look very good in an overall sense, although I do have to say that Nathan Peterman played very well. Having said that, the Bills have problems along the offensive line, at wide receiver and lack quality depth at running back behind starter LeSean McCoy.

Baltimore went 5-0 in the preseason while scoring 30 points or more twice and never giving up more than 20 points defensively. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco looked like a guy that has some desire now and that’s because the Ravens found out that RG3 can still play this game.

This is a game that 71 percent of public bettors already like the Ravens to cover the chalk in. I see no way Baltimore loses to a Bills team they know they should beat, particularly seeing how one loss kept them out of the playoffs last season.

The Ravens ranked an encouraging ninth in scoring (24.7 ppg) and impressive sixth in points allowed (18.9 ppg), not to mention they’ve gone an encouraging 7-3 ATS in their last 10 regular season openers.

NFL Week 1 Pick: Baltimore 24 Buffalo 14

Pittsburgh at Cleveland

When: Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 1:00 PM ET
Where: FirstEnergy Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio
NFL Odds: Pittsburgh -4 / Total: 45.5

Pittsburgh went 3-1 in the preseason and scored at least 30 points three times. along the way. While veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger only made a brief appearance in game 3 while fellow Killa B’s members, Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown never suited up at all, I’m expecting the trio of veterans to play at a high level.

Cleveland looked pretty good in going 3-1 in the preseason. The browns took out the Giants in their opener and closed with wins over Philadelphia and Detroit in Weeks 3 and 4 after narrowly falling to Buffalo in Week 2. I love Cleveland’s addition of veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor and wide receiver Jarvis Landry among other additions and I believe they’re going to pay immediate dividends as the Browns start to look and play like a competent NFL team.

However, I’m not expecting the Browns to pull off the outright upset against a Steelers team that should be locked in and too focused to lose what should be a winnable contest. The spread for this Week 1 affair has dropped steadily over the last couple of weeks and now sits at 3.5 after originally opening around 7 points, which is why I like the Steelers for the SU win, if not necessarily the ATS cover.

Pittsburgh has gone an uninspiring 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games against their AFC North division rivals and a discouraging 2-5 ATS in their last 7 regular season openers, but I still like Big Ben and company for the outright win.

NFL Week 1 Pick: Pittsburgh 23 Cleveland 20

San Francisco 49ers at Minnesota Vikings

When: Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 1:00 PM ET
Where: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minnesota
NFL Week 1 Odds: Minnesota -6 / Total: 46

San Francisco didn’t look particularly impressive in going 1-3 in the preseason. The Niners lost their final three scrimmage games after beating lowly Dallas in their opener and they got man-handled in their 16-13 Week 3 preseason loss at Houston. Still, the Niners won their final five games last season with Jimmy Garoppolo under center and they improved their roster more under second-year head coach Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers averaged a healthy 28.8 points per game over their final five games last season and hung 44 points on a Jacksonville Jaguars defense that finished second in points allowed a year ago.

Minnesota looked great on both sides of the ball in posting a 3-1 record this preseason. After falling to Philadelphia in the NFC Championship, the Vikings signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency to be their franchise signal-caller for the foreseeable future and I believe that was a good move. The Vikings have some nice talent at the skill positions with wide receivers Stephon Diggs and Adam Thielen, tight end Kyle Rudolph and running back Dalvin Cook. Minnesota ranked first almost across the board on defense last season and the addition of Cousins and some growth from their skill position players could be just the thing that puts Minnesota over the top in 2018.

49ers at Viking Prediction

While I’m expecting the new-look Niners to be competitive this season, I’m thinking both, that everyone’s jumping the gun on Frisco and Jimmy G and that Minnesota has a legitimate chance to reach – and win – Super Bowl 53.

For this Week 1 opener, the pick is quite simple to me. The Vikings are playing at home, they have the far better defense and I believe they want to send a message, not only to the Niners, but to all of their NFC counterparts, that all roads to the Super Bowl in the NFC will go through Minnesota.

hile the 49ers are a robust 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games in Week 1 and impressive 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games, the Vikings are a near-perfect 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games in the month of September and an insane 42-19 ATS in their last 61 games overall. I’m expecting Minnesota to use a powerful performance from their defense and some improved offense from kirk Cousins and company to get the win and narrowly cover the chalk with the statement-making performance they’re looking for.

NFL Week 1 Pick: Minnesota 29 San Francisco 20.

You have probably all heard those radio ads where some tipster guy tells you to call an 800-number to get his lock pick for the upcoming weekend of NFL betting on Week 1. I’ve always found these claims to be a little bold, simply because there are so many things that can go wrong in the space of a 60-minute football game. That said, part of my job here is to provide you guys with picks that are winners, and which will give your bankroll a bit of a boost each week.

With that in mind, I have gone through the NFL Week 1 schedule to find teams that I believe are sure winners. The odds on these guys may not be particularly great, but NFL Week 1 is all about building your betting confidence and getting some easy money in the bank. Let’s take a look at a few teams that will almost certainly be 1-0 once the first week of the 2017 NFL season is in the books.

2017 NFL Week 1 Sure Winners and Betting Predictions

Atlanta Falcons

There is some concern that the Falcons are going to come into the season carrying a bit of a Super Bowl hangover. It happened to the Carolina Panthers last year, so why won’t the same fate befall Atlanta this season? The simple answer here is that Matt Ryan and that offense that he runs should be dominant once again.

The Falcons open the season with a trip to Chicago to face a Bears team that they have historically struggled against. These two haven’t met since 2014, though, and they both look very different now. Do you really see Mike Glennon of the Bears being able to match what Matty Ice delivers? No. me either.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Given that Ben Roethlisberger seriously considered retiring in the offseason, you get a definite sense that this version of the Steelers is living on borrowed time. This is a team that is certainly well equipped to take another run at the Super Bowl, especially on the offensive side of the football.

The Steelers are blessed with an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position, and they also have the running talents of LeVeon Bell to draw upon. Pittsburgh will start the season with a game against their division rivals, the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers have dominated Cleveland in recent years, and this season should not be much different in that regard.

Watson certainly looked the part in the preseason, but things are going to get a good deal tougher when the real action begins this weekend. The Texans will open at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that is still trying to find their franchise QB, as it’s looking more and more as though Blake Bortles is going to be a bust. I like the Texans to open the season with a win at home.

Carolina Panthers

Things tend to swing in favor of the home team in the NFL Week 1, but don’t tell that to the San Francisco 49ers, as they have lost their last 7 games on home turf. They will start this season with a visit from the Carolina Panthers, a team looking to bounce back after a sub-par season last year.

The 49ers have made sweeping changes in the front office, but the improvements on the field are still likely to be some way off. I think that the Panthers will pose a serious threat to the Falcons in the NFC South this season, and that all begins with a comfortable win on the road in Week 1.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans

The Texans went 1-2 in the preseason after canceling their finale against Dallas because of Hurricane Harvey while Jacksonville went 2-2 this preseason. Still, don’t let the preseason fool you. The Texans are by far, the better team on both sides of the ball – and definitely have the edge at quarterback.

While the Jags got it right by hiring Tom Coughlin to run their football operations, it’s a damned shame he forgot to part ways with awful quarterback Blake Bortles, who head coach Doug Marrone has named as his starter to open the season.

Jacksonville is 0-4 ATS in their last four regular season openers while Houston has gone 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games against their division rivals and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Week 1 games. Houston is the sure winner in this Week 1 AFC South divisional battle.
