No. 5 Ryan Palmer

You might not hear Ryan Palmer’s name being mentioned as a potential long shot winner, but he’s my No. 5 pick to win the Phoenix Open and for good reason.

The 44-year-old is 28th in the Official Golf World Rankings (OGWR). More importantly, Palmer has been mostly outstanding since the start of the 2020-21 season. In seven events, the Texas native has recorded four Top-25 finishes and three Top-10 finishes.

Over his last three tournaments, Palmer finished fourth at the Sentry Tournament of Champions last month before finishing T41 a week later at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Just last week, Palmer finished T2 in the Farmers Insurance Open.

Palmer ranks 49th in driving distance (303.3), 15th in eagles per hole (78.0) a spectacular third in birdie average (5.08) and 26th in scoring average (70.1).

Palmer finished in a three-way tie for second place in Phoenix in 2015 while finishing in a five-way tie for second in 2006. At +4000, Palmer is offering a tremendous payout if he can bring home the bacon.

No. 4 Xander Schauffele

Sixth in the OGWR, the 27-year-old Californian ranks eight in eagles (72.0), ninth in birdie average (4.83) and sixth in scoring average (69.5).

In six events this season, Schauffele has four Top-10 finishes, including a fifth place finish in the Sentry Tournament of Champions last month and a second place finish in last weekend’s Farmers Insurance Open. After recording a trio of second place finishes last season, but no wins, this dude is due for an outright win and he’s got the skills to get it done.

No. 3 Rickie Fowler

No one is really mentioning Rickie Fowler much these days, but I think the 32-year-old Californian still has plenty of gas left in the tank.

In eight outings this season, Fowler only has one Top 25 finish, but he’s also ranked a solid 68th in driving distance (300.6) and 61st in birdie average (4.18). More importantly, Fowler won this event in 2019 while finishing second in 2016 and 2010.

Maybe it’s me, but I think the gifted, but often underachieving Fowler is long overdue for a win.

No. 2 Webb Simpson

Ninth if the OGWR, the 35-year-old North Carolina native ranks second in driving accuracy, 29th in eagles (100.8), 23rd in birdie average (4.54) and ninth in scoring average (69.6). In seven events this season, Simpson has three Top-10 finishes, including a T4 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii two weeks ago. Simpson won this tournament a year ago in a playoff against Tony Finau while finishing second in 2017.

Simpson has been rock-solid with every shot in the bag and will definitely challenge for the win.

No. 1 Hideki Matsuyama

In conclusion, the 23rd in the Official Golf World Rankings, the 28-year-old Japanese star has recorded one Top-10 finish in nine events this season including a T2 finish in the Houston Open in November.

Matsuyama finished an uninspiring T53 in the Farmers Insurance Open two weeks ago, but is my top pick to win this weekend.

In addition, Matsuyama won this event in 2016 and 2017 while finishing T2 in 2015. Matsuyama is due for a win after failing to get one last season and I believe he’s getting the huge ‘W’ this coming weekend.

But, Rickie missed the cut at the Famers Insurance. Webb Simpson shot a -8 last year. He finished second in his last tournament played, the Sony Open.

Note that after a 71 first round, Simpson shot 66-66-67 at the Sony Open. Webb’s got a big chance this week.

What are the two best golfers to consider backing at odds of +2800 to +5500?

At +2800, Matt Kuchar offers fair odds. Kuchar shot a -12 at the 2019 Phoenix Open. He missed the cut at the Sony Open, but he can bounce back this week.

In conclusion, the other player to consider is Branden Grace. The South African player has missed the cut in 3-of-4. He shot a -15 last year.

Over the course of the last 10 years, the Waste Management Phoenix Open has been won by an American player on 8 separate occasions. The outsider in all of this is Matsuyama, who won the other two times, back to back in 2016 and 2017.

That said, he is going to need to improve his current form quite dramatically to get the win here, as he has but 1 top 10 finish to his name in the early part of the season.

After that, his T3rd finish came at the Farmers Insurance event last weekend, so perhaps that was a sign that he is ready to break out.

In conclusion, trying to pick a winner in any given week on the PGA Tour is tough, but I always try to find the man on the best form before making my pick. Using that variable, you really need to take a look at Schauffele, as he has already picked up a pair of wins this season, doubling his total career victories in the process.

This young man has already surpassed the $3 million mark in earnings this season and looks set for a breakout year. In addition, I think he is the man to beat this weekend, which is why my money will be heading in his direction.

In addition, he will eventually come around, though, but has a long way to go to match the 5 tour wins that he picked up in 2015.

Hideki Matsuyama

Given that Matsuyama has won this event the last two years, it’s no real surprise that he is favorite to win along with Spieth.

Matsuyama is coming off his best season as a pro, picking up 3 wins in 2017. He has yet to win a tournament this season, but he does have a pair of top 5 finishes this year.

Matsuyama has made it all the way up to #5 in the world, thanks in large part to his play over the last year, and I like him to get the threepeat this weekend.

Jon Rahm

PGA Betting Odds: +800

Last season proved to be a breakthrough year for the Spaniard, as he went on a run at the end of 2017 where he was consistently landing in the top 10 in every tournament that he played. That form skyrocketed him up the rankings, taking him to #2 in the world.

The 2018 season has also started incredibly well for Rahm, as he already has a win on tour, winning the CareerBuilder Challenge a couple of weeks ago. Rahm is a great pick to land in the top 5 this weekend.

Rickie Fowler

PGA Betting Odds: +1300

In conclusion, this is an incredibly strong field, with Fowler another player currently in the top 10 in the world at #7. Fowler is another player who has made a strong start to the season, landing a pair of top 5 finishes already.

It’s still very hearly in the season, but Fowler has already barged his way into the top 20 in the FedEx Cup standings.

After that, He is another player that should certainly be a solid top 10 bet in this event, but I think he might even crack the top 3.
