The Houston Texans added some pieces that head coach DeMeco Ryans believes will lead to the Texans’ defense being much better than it was last season. Ryans has a win now attitude.
Does that mean Houston’s offense will excel this season?

Texans’ Offensive Changes During the Offseason
Before this past April’s NFL Draft, rumors swirled that Ryans might decide to pull the trigger on a defender. Houston’s D requires work and the AFC is loaded with a lot of great offenses.
But instead, the Texans’ HC did the right thing by going with CJ Stroud. The Ohio State quarterback will be the cornerstone of the franchise.
The Texans also added veteran WR Robert Woods and former Buffalo running back Devin Singletary. Check out if the changes will help Houston turn around last season’s terrible offense.
Houston Texans Quarterbacks Room Analysis
The quarterbacks room has the makings of one of the AFC’s best. It won’t happen this season but depending on how well Stroud performs, it could jump to a top five room in 2024.
CJ appeared NFL ready in his final season at Ohio State. Stroud played fantastic against Georgia, almost leading the Buckeyes to an upset victory.
Ryans immediately put CJ ahead of Davis Mills, last year’s starter. Mills has potential to be a QB1 in the NFL, but he seems okay with being a backup. If Mills sticks with the Texans next season and CJ develops this season, Houston could be on the path to being an AFC contender.
Houston Texans Offensive Line Analysis
Left tackle Laremy Tunsil is one of the best in the NFL. Tunsil is the reason Ryans feels it’s okay to throw CJ into the deep end of the pool.
The Texans traded for former Buccaneer Shaq Mason. The right guard is as good as it gets. Starting center Juice Scruggs is a rookie. Scruggs must get up to speed as soon as possible if the line is to have success.
Houston Texans Wide Receivers Room Analysis
Robert Woods will help Stroud’s development. No doubt, Ryans will lean on the former Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills player.
Houston is excited about John Metchie III’s prospects. Metchie III had an injury last season. If he’s one-hundred percent this season, and hasn’t lost any of his speed and superb route running skills, the Texans’ WR room gets an upgrade.
Houston Texans Running Backs Room Analysis
Singletary is excellent at catching the ball from the backfield. Right now, Devin is listed as the RB2.
NFL fans know, though, that Ryans will use both Singletary and RB1 Dameon Pierce this season. If the line gels, Singletary and Pierce should have decent seasons.
Houston Points Scored & Yards Per Game Range Prediction
The Texans’ offense can’t be worse than what it was last season. In 2022, Houston averaged 17 points and less than 284 yards per game.
Ryans has made the right moves to give Stroud the best chance of any rookie quarterback to succeed. We should expect a positive move of 2 to 4 points and a positive move of 15 to 25 more yards per game.
Texans Yard Per Game Range: 300 – 325
Texans Points Scored Range: 19 – 21
QB CJ Stroud to Win Offensive Rookie of the Year: +710
Analysis:
Bryce Young and BJ Robinson offer lower odds than Stroud to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Although Young and Robinson have better chances of grabbing the award, CJ could get it done. Ryans is going to allow Stroud to make mistakes early. If CJ picks up the pace after the first growing pains month of the season, who knows? If you believe, go for it.
