Injuries That Will Affect Your Super Bowl LII Betting Plan

Written by on January 25, 2018

Football is arguably the most physically demanding sport in the world, so by the time we get to the final game of the season, you simply cannot expect the two competing teams to be in perfect health. You can almost guarantee that every player starting in the big game will be carrying a knock or two that requires them to receive some kind of pain-numbing shot before they take the field. That said, some injuries are more serious than others, to the point where an injury to a star player can have an impact on how the game plays out, including any Super Bowl LII betting plan that you may already have. The injury reports are generally very vague at this time of the year, but there are some names on there that might give you some pause before you place your Super Bowl betting picks. Let’s look at how injuries might impact both the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.

New England Patriots Injury Issues

The one injury concern that the Patriots fans may fret about more than anything else is the stitches on the throwing hand of Tom Brady. That hand was quite heavily taped during the AFC Championship Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, although his performance and the eventual outcome suggested that it wasn’t that big an issue. Brady should be fully healed by SB LII, but there is always the possibility of reaggravating the injury or picking up another in practice. Perhaps the biggest real concern is the health of Rob Gronkowski. The towering tight end is a huge target for Brady, as well as being a potential game-changer who is about as close to impossible to defend as it gets. He went out with a suspected concussion against the Jaguars last weekend, failing to return for the second half. The extra week off should give him time to heal, but if the blow to the head was particularly damaging, you need to wonder about potential after effects that could have an impact on the big game. Running back Mike Gillislee is listed as questionable for the Super Bowl, as is tackle LaAdrian Waddle. These guys may be lesser names, but any starter missing from the line-up is a concern, still, the Pats will come in as the Super Bowl LII Betting favorites.

Philadelphia Eagles Injury Issues

No real surprise to learn that the biggest potential injury impact will come at the QB for the Eagles. Starter Carson Wentz is out for the season, while backup QB Nick Foles is dealing with rib issues he picked up against the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game. Foles will definitely get the start, but if he has those ribs taped, or if they are still tender, you wonder how it will affect his throwing game. Regarding any injury, Nick Foles and the Eagles will remain as the Super Bowl LII Betting underdogs. The only other pressing injury concern that the Eagles have heading into the big game, other than the guys on IR who have already missed portions of the season, is with LB Dannell Ellerbe. A hamstring injury is hampering Ellerbe, and it caused him to miss out on the Vikings game. Perhaps of greater importance here is the fact that Ellerbe is 1 of only 7 players on the Eagles roster with Super Bowl experience. His presence on the field could have a calming effect on the first timers at the big game, so you can bet that Philly will be doing all they can to get the big man ready to go to face the Patriots.
