The late game on Saturday in Week 3 of the preseason is a nationally televised affair as former AFC West rivals the Seahawks and Chargers face off from Los Angeles. The Chargers are home underdogs on the NFL Odds, somewhat unusual in Week 3 of the preseason.

Last Meeting
In Week 9 of the 2018 regular season, the Chargers went to Seattle and won 25-17. A pass interference call against Michael Davis on the final play of regulation gave Seattle an untimed down and a chance to force overtime. However, the defense prevented the Hawks from scoring. Philip Rivers threw touchdown passes of 12 yards to Tyrell Williams and 30 yards to Mike Williams.
Melvin Gordon ran for 113 yards, and Desmond King provided the deciding points by returning a pick 42 yards for a touchdown with 6:44 remaining to give the Chargers a 25-10 lead. Russell Wilson was 26 of 39 for 235 yards, and threw a 10-yard TD pass to Jaron Brown on Seattle’s opening drive, but Wilson also had that pick-six.

Why Bet on Seattle?
The Seahawks (1-1) lost at Minnesota 25-19 last week. Russell Wilson went 6 for 9 for 82 yards after sitting out the preseason opener. He had a 33-yard completion to Jaron Brown, who has a starting wide receiver spot for now following the retirement of Doug Baldwin. D.K. Metcalf, the second-round draft pick from Mississippi, did not play.
Coach Pete Carroll said Metcalf’s knee surgery showed minimal injury. This falls in line with the Seahawks expectations he won’t be sidelined long. Metcalf is week to week and looks doubtful for the start of the season.
All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner watched last week’s game being eased back into action following a minor knee procedure. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah remains in rehab mode following offseason shoulder surgery. He has yet to practice. Carroll said rookie safety Marquise Blair is day to day with back spasms that forced him out of Sunday night’s game at Minnesota. Blair, a second-round pick, is competing with Tedric Thompson and Delano Hill to start at safety alongside Bradley McDougald. Hill is finally back from the hip injury that ended his 2018 season and will play in Seattle’s third preseason game.
Wilson should play a fair amount this week. Paxton Lynch won’t, though. Lynch is in the concussion protocol after a helmet-to-helmet hit in last week’s game. It’s a setback to Lynch’s chances of winning the backup role behind Wilson. Geno Smith (knee) will serve as the No. 2 quarterback against the Chargers.

Why Bet on LA Chargers?
The Bolts are 0-2 this preseason after a 19-17 home loss to the Saints last week. The team remains without Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon. His holdout is expected to continue into the season. Contract talks have not progressed as hoped and Gordon will continue to train in Florida for the foreseeable future. Through two preseason games, Austin Ekeler has out-snapped Justin Jackson at a 2:1 ratio (25-13) with the starting offense.
LA already got horrible news on stellar safety Derwin James as he’s expected to miss 3-4 months following foot surgery. James bent a screw that he had inserted into his foot as a freshman at Florida State, leading doctors to determine the best course of action in removing it. Adrian Phillips is expected to take his spot in the Chargers’ secondary. James wreaked havoc on the NFL as a rookie, grading out as PFF’s No. 3 coverage safety behind only Chicago’s Eddie Jackson and New York’s Jamal Adams.
This week to add receiver depth, the Bolts brought back Dontrelle Inman. Inman was traded during the 2017 season from the Chargers and played the rest of the year for the Chicago Bears. While with the Chargers, Inman caught 107 passes for 1,463 yards (13.7 avg.) and seven touchdowns. His most prolific season came in 2016 when he posted single-season career highs in receptions (58), yards (810) and touchdowns (4). Inman was recently released by the Patriots.
One of the notable players we have yet to see take a single snap in this preseason is quarterback Philip Rivers. According to Coach Anthony Lynn, the only way Rivers plays Saturday is that if he wants to. Rivers recently said that the joint practices the Chargers had were super valuable to him. He, along with the rest of the starters, was able to get a good amount of work with the Rams and Saints. Top receiver Keenan Allen has yet to play, either, and is banged up. He probably won’t in this one.
