While many coaches rested their starters in Week 1 of the preseason, we should see most of them play across the league in Week 2. Here’s a look at two interesting matchups and their NFL odds at MyBookie Sportsbook. Home teams are generally short favorites in preseason games.
2019 NFL Preseason Week 2 Odds, Overview & Picks
Green Bay Packers at Baltimore Ravens
- When: Thursday, 7:30 PM ET
- TV: NFL Network Replay
- Live Stream: NFL Game Pass
- NFL Preseason Week 2 Odds: Baltimore Ravens -3.5
If you aren’t betting on the Baltimore Ravens in the preseason under coach John Harbaugh, you aren’t paying attention. They destroyed Jacksonville 29-0 last week to win a 14th straight preseason game. Lamar Jackson directed two scoring drives in three possessions. The former Heisman winner played the entire first quarter, which is a bit unusual so early in the preseason. Jackson went 4 for 6 for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Baltimore hasn’t lost a preseason game since 2015. “I’m still mad about that one,” Harbaugh said about the 20-19 defeat to Atlanta on Sept. 3, 2015. “We like to win. I think winning is better than losing, and we don’t do much different than anybody else.”
The last time the Ravens lost a preseason game was on September 3, 2015. That was two days before Jackson played his first game in college at Louisville — Sept. 5, 2015, at Auburn. The Ravens’ 14-game winning streak is the longest for any team over the past 25 preseasons.
Baltimore has made a trade since that game, sending kicker Kaare Vedvik to the Vikings for a 2020 fifth-round pick. Vedvik was on the trading block all offseason but talks escalated after he went 4-for-4 on his field goals, including a 55-yarder, during the preseason opener.
The Green Bay Packers opened the preseason with a 28-26 win over Houston. Overall, Green Bay has won the first preseason game it has played for five straight years. DeShone Kizer was 8 for 13 with 102 yards and a touchdown. Tim Boyle added two second-half touchdown passes for the Packers as Aaron Rodgers had the night off. Rodgers may play briefly in this one.
The team got some bad news when linebacker Oren Burks suffered a torn pectoral muscle in practice. Penciled in as a starter alongside teammate Blake Martinez in the middle of the field, Burks’ absence will surely be felt. No. 226 overall pick Ty Summers will likely get the first nod over Curtis Bolton and Brady Shelton to fill the 2018 third-rounder’s shoes.
This will be only the second preseason meeting between the Packers and Ravens. The only other preseason game between the two took place in Baltimore in 1996, a 17-15 victory by the Packers. Green Bay looks to start the preseason 2-0 for the fourth consecutive year.
Chicago Bears at NY Giants
- When: Friday, 7:30 PM ET
- TV: NFL Network
- Live Stream: NFL Game Pass
- NFL Preseason Week 2 Odds: NY Giants -1
The Chicago Bears was a 23-13 home loser to Carolina in Week 1 of the preseason, although QB Mitchell Trubisky and some other starters sat out. The biggest storyline in Bears camp is the kicking competition between Elliott Fry and Eddy Pineiro. Fry had the Soldier Field fans roaring with a 43-yard field goal to close the first half, the same distance and at the same post, Cody Parkey struck on his double-doink to end the Bears’ 16-15 playoff loss last season to the Philadelphia Eagles. Pineiro wasn’t as fortunate, missing wide left on a 48-yard attempt in the first half. Pineiro did make a 23-yard chip shot to get the Bears within 16-13 in the fourth quarter.
Pineiro on the ongoing kicker competition: “It does get a little exhausting. Every time you miss a kick, you’re like ‘damn.’Bears coach Matt Nagy said Anthony Miller is dealing with a sprained ankle. It’s unclear when the injury occurred, though Miller wasn’t present for Sunday’s practice.
Nagy doesn’t believe the injury will cost Miller any regular-season time, which would suggest his sprain is of the “low-ankle” variety. Miller quietly ranked second among rookies with seven touchdown receptions last year, which also led his team. Miller should be ready for the regular-season opener. The Bears won’t have tight end Trey Burton at all this preseason off sports hernia surgery. Burton says he will be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.
The NY Giants were 31-22 winners over the Jets in Week 1 of the preseason. Eli Manning got the start, going 1-of-1 for three yards before the offense was booed off the field following a three-and-out. Rookie Daniel Jones was next up on the team’s second series, and the No. 6 overall pick was a perfect 5-of-5 for 67 yards and capped it off with a touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler in the red zone. Could there be a quarterback controversy? Coach Pat Shurmur advised fans to “slow your roll” on a potential quarterback controversy.
The team’s other first-round pick this year, cornerback DeAndre Baker, was injured at practice on Sunday. Early word is a knee sprain but results of more tests are pending. Baker has worked at cornerback with the first-team defense all summer.
