Day 12 Recap of the Women’s Semifinals

Sinner and Djokovic met in the first of two men’s semi-finals Friday in Melbourne and, while Sinner winning wasn’t exactly a major surprise, the way in which he dominated the match was. The 22-year-old Italian won 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 6, 6-3, handing Djokovic his first defeat at the Australian Open in nearly 40 matches. He was incredibly poised throughout the match and didn’t show any signs of worry or fatigue. With the way he’s playing, it’s hard to envision any scenario in which he isn’t lifting the championship trophy.

Medvedev has had an incredible show of determination throughout the Australian Open and that continued Friday with a come-from-behind victory over Alexander Zverev to reach his third Aussie Open final in four years. He beat Zverev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 4, 7-6 5, 6-3 in a marathon match that lasted more than five hours. He also overcame a 2-0 set deficit against Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 64 and has been on court more than 20 hours through six matches.

Women’s Final Will be Epic Showdown

The women’s final will be played against a major political backdrop with Sabalenka, born in Minsk, Belarus, and Rybakina, born in Moscow but currently playing under the flag of Kazakhstan. Both players are powerful ball-strikers with a strong baseline pedigree. Rybakina is the better server, but Sabalenka has the advantage at the net.

These players have contrasting appearances on the court. Rybakina is seldom rattled, and most of the time, you can’t tell if she is winning or losing by her demeanor. Watching Sabalenka, on the other hand, can be a roller coaster with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, though she’s done better to harness the emotions so far in 2023.

Sabalenka has won all three of their previous matchups, including at Wimbledon in 2021. They haven’t met in the last 18 months, and all three of their previous matchups have gone the full three sets. Each has played out the same way, with Sabalenka winning the first and third sets and Rybakina taking the middle set.

Rybakina has a slam title under her belt with the Wimbledon crown from last summer. Sabalenka hasn’t played in a singles final, but she does have two doubles titles in grand slams, so she should be comfortable on this stage. Sabalenka won her 11th career WTA title earlier this month in Adelaide, and Rybakina has three career titles.

Look for this match to go the distance. The way Rybakina is serving and controlling points, she is going to be hard to beat and is worth a bet as the underdog at +115.

Djokovic on Collision Course with History

The men’s final won’t just decide the first Grand Slam title of the 2023 season but it will also determine who takes the No. 1 world ranking from injured Carlos Alcaraz. No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic cruised past unseeded American Tommy Paul in the semis to win his 27th straight match at Melbourne Park, dating back to the fourth round in 2018. He’s won 12 straight sets in this tournament and is a healthy favorite against No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat Karen Khachanov in four sets.

Tsitsipas dropped a set against a second opponent in this tournament when the third-set tiebreak went to Khachanov. Tsitsipas had two match points in that tiebreak for the straight-set sweep, but he bounced back with an early break in the fourth set to win the match. The only other time Tsitsipas dropped a set in this tournament was in a 5-set win over No. 15 Jannik Sinner in the round of 16.

Djokovic is 10-2 against Tsitsipas with eight straight wins since 2019. He’s 9-0 in the final at the Australian Open and 21-11 overall in Grand Slam finals. Djokovic is 4-1 in his last five slam finals and 9-2 since the start of the 2017 season. He’s dropped just one set in this tournament, and that came in the second round.

The only final for Tsitsipas was at the 2021 French Open, where he lost to Djokovic in five sets after leading 2-0. The Greek native took the first set in a tiebreaker at Roland Garros, then won 6-2 in the second but managed only nine games total in the final three sets.

Tsitsipas took a healthy lead against Djokovic at the 2021 French Open but couldn’t close it out. In the four matches since then, Djokovic has three straight-set wins and has dropped just one of nine sets. Tsitsipas may win a set on Sunday, but that’s it. Djokovic wins in four and ties Nadal with Grand Slam title No. 22, setting up quite the showdown at Roland Garros in a couple months.

If you didn’t know before, now you do. The world No. 1 has won two straight and four of the last six Australian Open titles. Including his run to this year’s finals, the 33-year-old Djokovic is 81-8 all-time in the Aussie Open. The Serbian has won a record, eight Australian Open titles overall 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020.

This year, Djokovic won his opener over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in straight sets, but needed four sets to get past American Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-7 3, 7-6 2, 6-3. The two-time reigning champ then needed five sets to get past American Taylor Fritz in the third round. After taking a 2-0 lead, Djokovic suffered an apparent ab injury early in the third set that allowed Fritz to get the match to a fifth set. Djokovic then responded with a 6-2 final set that sent Fritz packing.

The 17-time slam winner needed four sets to get past 14th-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic and four more sets to get past sixth-seeded Alex Zverev in the quarterfinals. Finally, the world No. 1 put an end to the eye-opening run of unseeded qualifier Aslan Karatsev in three swift sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday. Now, Djokovic enters the finals leading all men in aces serves 100 while ranking third in break points won 30, fourth in first serve return points won 121 and first in second serve return points won 127.

Medvedev Puts The D In Dangerous!

The world No. 4 had never been past the fourth round in Australia prior to this year, but I expected him to reach this year’s finals and he hasn’t disappointed. Medvedev, who just turned 25-years-old on Feb. 11, crushed Vasek Pospisil and Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets in his first two matches. The cerebral Russian then need five sets to get past Serbian Filip Krajinovic in the third round.

Medvedev then smacked American Mackenzie McDonald and fellow Russian Andrey Rublev senseless in consecutive matches in the fourth round and quarterfinals. The still blossoming star then looked fantastic in his dominating 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 semifinals win over fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in the wee hours of Friday morning. Medvedev comes into the finals ranked fourth in aces 74, first in break points won 35 and seventh in first serve points won 81%. The Russian also ranks second in first serve return points won and second in second serve points won 103.

Prediction

Here’s what I wrote just prior to the start of this year’s Australian Open:

“The smart money is on Novak Djokovic, but something tells me that Daniil Medvedev is not going to be denied of claiming his first grand slam title. Medvedev is 3-4 in seven career matches against Djokovic, but has won three of the last four meetings after losing his first three encounters against the world No. 1 Medvedev took out Djokovic 6-3, 6-3 in last year’s season-ending ATP Finals and I believe he’s the pick to win the 2021 Australian Open.”

I’ve seen absolutely nothing to sway my belief that Daniil Medvedev is going to beat Novak Djokovic in this year’s championship. The Russian is the bigger and younger player in this affair and should have a little bit more left in the tank than the 33-year-old Djokovic.

More importantly, I genuinely believe that Medvedev is the most cerebral player in the world today and that he will figure out a way to dethrone Djokovic in this match. There aren’t many players that don’t have a single weakness that Djokovic can attack, but Daniil Medvedev is one of those rare players. The Russian has a very effective serve and both powerful and consistent ground strokes off of both wings. It won’t be much of an upset for me, but I’ve got Daniil Medvedev scratching out the hard-fought win in an epic affair.

It feels like Novak Djokovic plays in every major tennis tournament final. He hasn’t but it feels like it. When it comes to the Australian Open, Djokovic has never lost in a final. That gives him a major leg up against his opponent on Sunday. Novak has won the Aussie Open 7 times. His first Australian Open Championship happened in 2008. Since then, he’s won the trophy in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2019. Will he take the title in 2020?

Often, Djokovic dominates on his way to a major final. Not this year. It took 4 sets to beat both Milos Raonic and Roger Federer. He played a 7-6 7-1 set against Milos. Then versus Federer, Roger pushed him in another 7-6 7-1 set. The battles against Federer and Raonic might open the door for Thiem.

But Dominic didn’t breeze through is the last couple of opponents either. In the quarterfinals, Thiem beat Rafael Nadal in 7-sets. Dominic’s rival pushed him to the edge. Thiem had to pick it up after the first set against Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. Zverev beat Dominic 6-3. After the first set loss, Thiem rallied to win 5 straight sets.

Still, Dominic Thiem has played 13 sets in the last couple of matches. That’s not a good sign heading into a battle against the best men’s tennis player in the world. Novak should be more energetic in the final.

But this could be Dominic’s time. Djokovic doesn’t have as big of an advantage as the odds indicate. In the head-to-head, Dominic Thiem has held his own. Thiem has 4 wins. Djokovic has 6 wins. In addition, Thiem has won the last couple of matchups. He beat Djokovic at the French Open Semifinals last year. He followed that up with a win over Novak at the Nitto ATP Finals.

Thiem has a shot. Back Dominic to pull off the major upset.

Garbine Muguruza has won a couple of major titles. Although this is Garbine’s first Australian Open Final, she’s not new to championship rounds. In 2016, she took home the French Open trophy. The following year she won at Wimbledon. That makes Muguruza serious chalk to beat Sofia Kenin on Saturday.

Another reason to back Garbine? During this tournament, she’s dominated. She didn’t start out dominating opponents. Muguruza required 4 sets to beat Shelby Rogers in the first round. She also required 4 sets to beat Ajla Tomljanovic. But after struggling in the first couple of rounds, she’s mowed through 4 straight ranked opponents. 3-of-4 were seeded in the Top 10. The three she beat were 5-Elina Svitolina, 9-Kiki Bertens, and 4-Simona Halep. It’s obvious that Muguruza has a major chance to win on Feb. 1.

But although that’s true, we shouldn’t discount Sofia Kenin’s chances. In the semifinals, the 21-year-old American handled 1-seed Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. Kenin beat Barty 7-6 8-6, 7-5. This came on the heels victories against Cori Gauff and Ons Jabeur.

Kenin has developed into one of the top tennis players in the world. She showed signs last year that she was ready to step it up. Sofia made it all the way to Round 4 at the French Open. Barty knocked her out 3-6, 6-3, 0-6. Even last year’s Australian Open wasn’t terrible. Simona Halep beat Kenin in the second round 3-6, 7-6 7-5, 4-6.

Not only that but in October Sofia Kenin bested Garbine Muguruza. Facing Muguruza in Round 1 at the China Open in Beijing, Sofia showed no signs of nervousness. She beat Muguruza 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. That’s the most important reason to back Kenin. She’s proven that she can take down Garbine. Back Sofia Kenin to upset Garbine Muguruza in what should be a competitive Australian Open Final.

Naomi Osaka vs Petra Kvitova

28-year-old Czech Republic player Petra Kvitova has been sensational during the 2019 Australian Open. She has yet to yield a single set. Collins pushed Kvitova to a tiebreaker in the first set, but Kvitova prevailed 7-6 7-2. She dominated Collins 6-0 in the second set.

This is the first time the veteran player has made it to the Australian Open Finals. She’s won Wimbledon twice, in 2011 and 2014, and made it to the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2017. Other than that, her record in major tournaments doesn’t overly impress.

Last season, Petra lost in Round 1 down under. That should give Naomi Osaka backers plenty of confidence heading into the finals.

Osaka was brilliant in the 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Karolina Pliskova. Just a day before Pliskova had pulled off the miraculous come from behind win over Serena Williams. Karolina was down 1-5 in the final set before rallying to beat Serena. She had all the momentum.

But, Osaka wouldn’t be denied. The 4^th ranked player on the WTA battled Pliskova hard in the second set. After Pliskova took it, she didn’t sit around and wait for Pliskova to beat her. Instead, she played as beautifully in the third set as she had in the first.

That’s been a theme for the U.S. Open Champion during the Australian Open. She finds ways to come back after losing sets. Against Su-Wei Hsieh in Round 3, Osaka had to rally after losing the first set 5-7. She rallied against Anastasija Sevastova in Round 4 after dropping the first set 4-6. In the semis, she just did what she always does, rallies after losing a set.

That should set Naomi up for success on Saturday. Some tennis handicappers might be surprised that she’s offering such great odds because she’s ranked 4^th in the world. Beating Kvitova won’t be easy, though.

Kvitova has played better tennis than any one during the Australian Open. This includes playing better than both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on the men’s side. Still, Naomi Osaka’s ready to prove she’s the best women’s tennis player on the planet.

Serena And Venus Square Off In Australian Open WTA Final

For Serena Williams, she’ll be shooting for an Open era record 23rd grand slam title while big sis Venus will look to win the eighth major of her storied career while making her first appearance in a major final for the first time since winning Wimbledon in 2008. Serena reached the Australian Open finals by rolling all over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-2, 6-1 in their semifinal match on Thursday just after Venus had beaten fellow American Coco Vandeweghe 6-7 3, 6-2, 6-3 in the other semifinal.

Venus and Serena have played one another 27 times in WTA Tour matches with the elder Williams winning 11 times. The pair last played one another in the quarterfinals of the 2015 U.S. Open with Serena winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The two last met at the Australian Open in 2003 with Serena winning 7-6 4, 3-6, 6-4 while the pair last met in a grand slam final in the 2009 Wimbledon finals which Serena won 7-6 3, 6-2.

The Williams sisters are the only two women during the Open era to have played one another in four consecutive grand slam finals. Venus has won 49 career singles title while Serena has bagged 71. Serena has won the last two meetings and seven of the last eight meetings overall. However, it should be noted that the elder Williams was diagnosed in 2011 with Sjogrens Syndrome, a little known autoimmune disease that is known to cause symptoms such as lack of energy and joint pain among others.

Now, moving on to my gut-wrenching Aussie Open finals pick, I’ve got to say that my ‘heart’ is screaming for a Venus Williams, but my head – and good old common sense – tells me that unless Serena ‘gives’ it away, which I just don’t see happening, the younger Williams will win the 23rd major of her illustrious career. While Venus is playing well in every aspect from her service game, to defending and just faced a player in Vandeweghe that has similar power to her sister, the fact of the matter is that there isn’t another player on the face of the planet that can duplicate the things that Serena Williams can do.

The younger Williams will have a huge edge in energy if this match goes to a third set, which is what I’m predicting to happen. While I really hate to pick against Venus Williams, I can’t in good conscious, go against Serena Williams with all she’s got riding on the line from making history to regaining her world No. 1 ranking. The younger Williams wins in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
