Major League Rugby (MLR) is the highest level of professional rugby union competition in North America that was born in 2017.

Major League Rugby’s roots go deeper than the league’s foundation. We are talking about the first recorded rugby match in the US was played in 1874, showcasing a long-standing American love for the sport.

In you wonder which were the teams that played that day, they were Harvard University and McGill University and used rugby union code rules. Harvard won the two-game series with a score of 3-0.

The inaugural season kicked off in April 2018 with seven teams: Austin Elite, Houston SaberCats, Glendale Raptors (now Colorado Raptors), New Orleans Gold, San Diego Legion, Seattle Seawolves, and Utah Warriors.

MLR Growth as a Rugby League

Despite its young age, it’s rapidly grown, adding teams and attracting global talent.

With a focus on domestic player development and an eye towards the 2031 Rugby World Cup, MLR is poised to become a major player in the sport.

The next MLR season will be contested by twelve teams: eleven from the United States and one from Canada.
