Last Game Review
Maryland (17-5, 7-4 Big Ten) won its fourth game in a row Wednesday, 76-68 over No. 17 Wisconsin. The Terrapins trailed 48-43 in the second half before taking the lead for good with a 14-2 run. Maryland led 62-58 before Ja’Kobi Gillespie banked in a 3-pointer, starting a 7-0 run for the Terps that pushed the lead to double digits. With the Badgers fielding two 7-footers, Maryland managed only 20 points in the paint but was 12-for-24 from deep.
Top Players
Rodney Rice and Gillespie led the Terps, as each scored 16 points. Gillespie added seven rebounds and two steals. Julian Reese had 14 points and eight rebounds. With his pull-up jumper at 15:26 in the first half, he eclipsed 1,300 career points. The senior is now one of just seven players in program history with over 800 rebounds to achieve that mark. Freshman Derik Queen had 12 points 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Selton Miguel tallied 12 points and earned his 76th career game in double figures. It was his 16th as a Terp this season. He leads the Terps in double-digit scoring games and scoring overall with 1,442 career points in his five-year career.
Kevin Willard
“I thought we worked hard, pretty much all night on the defensive end,” Coach Willard said. “When you haven’t played that against that offense, which we only had two guys that played against that offense, it takes a while to kind of figure out how to cheat it and where to go. … I think more than anything, the crowd was great because it gave us an emotional lift.”
Against Ranked Teams
The win was the Terps’ third over a ranked opponent and fourth against a Quad 1 opponent this season. The win was also Willard’s ninth over a ranked team as head coach at Maryland. Additionally, Maryland’s 13 wins at home this season is tied for the most in Division I. Only Missouri (15-0) has more wins at home. Wisconsin’s 68 points was its second fewest scored this season and its lowest since scoring 64 against Michigan on Dec 3.
AP Poll
On Monday, Maryland jumped into the AP Top 25 at No. 18. It marks the first AP Top 25 ranking for the Terps since Feb. 27, 2023 and is the highest since Maryland was ranked No. 13 on Dec. 5, 2022. The Terps currently own five Quad 1 wins this season which is the seventh most nationally. Maryland is the third-ranked Big Ten team in the NCAA NET and is the fifth-highest ranked team on KenPom.com. Of its five losses this year, four came on the road with three of those against Top 25 teams.
Ja’Kobi Gillespie
Gillespie was one of 50 players named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List. He is averaging the second-most points for the Terrapins this season, at 14.6 per game. Gillespie is one of the top assist men in the Big Ten, ranking sixth in the conference with 4.7 per game, and ranks fourth in the Big Ten in total steals with 41 and sixth in steals per game with 1.86. Gillespie is shooting 41.5% from behind the arc, and ranks second in the conference in three-pointers made with 54.
The Stats
Maryland’s five starters — the team’s five leading scorers — have a combined scoring average of 67.6, the highest among all major conference programs. Next on the list among major conference programs is Villanova with a combined average of 66.6. Only Bryant (68.2) and UNC Asheville (68.0) have a higher scoring average among all five top scorers in all Division I.

Ohio State Basketball Insights
Last Game Review
Ohio State (13-9, 5-6 Big Ten) badly needs this win for its NCAA Tournament hopes and after losing 87-79 at No. 18 Illinois on Sunday to see a three-game winning streak snapped. Will Riley scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half and the Illini rallied from an 11-point deficit. Illinois was just 4 of 20 on triples against but out rebounded the Buckeyes 43-31 and dominated points in the paint 52-30. Illinois’ bench outscored Ohio State’s bench 43-4.
Devin Royal
Royal dominated in the loss with 29 points and seven rebounds. It was the highest single-game scoring effort of conference play for Royal, who hit multiple triples for just the second time all season. With a season-long scoring average of 14.6 ppg, the sophomore wing is second on the team only to Bruce Thornton (17.2 ppg), who logged 20 points in the contest along with John Mobley.
Jake Diebler
“We are not playing our best yet, we haven’t peaked yet,” Coach Diebler said. “We’ve got to keep fighting to get there. … We gotta play a little bit smarter. Some of it’s shot selection at times, and some of our turnovers. Some of it is execution defensively, the communication at times, or fouling. We’re having some fouls … that it’s almost a mental lapse for a second.”
Bruce Thornton
Thornton has made 15-of-25 (60.0 percent) three-point attempts over the last four games. That is by far the best stretch of shooting the three in his career. Thornton is three points from 1,300 in his career. He just past Buckeye legends Jared Sullinger (1,282) and Clark Kellogg (1,285) last game and is a point away from catching E.J. Liddell on the career scoring list. He’s also just 17 points away from tying point guard Aaron Craft.
John Mobley Jr.
Mobley Jr. has made 15 three-pointers and has averaged over 16 points and four assists per game over the last four games. He’s the only player in the Big Ten with a three-point make in every game this season. He is fifth in the Big Ten with 52 threes and fifth at 2.36 three-pointers per game.
Sean Stewart
Forward Stewart missed Sunday’s game with an illness but should play here as Stewart went through part of pregame warmups before being ruled out Sunday. The 6-foot-9 sophomore has had a solid season for the Buckeyes, averaging 6.1 points and 6.0 rebounds as a starter. Against the best rebounding team in the nation, Stewart’s absence proved critical. Illinois finished with a 43-31 advantage on the glass and an 18-10 edge in second-chance points, and drew 25 fouls while committing only 14.
^Maryland vs Ohio State Last Meeting
The Terps trashed the visiting Buckeyes 83-59 back on Dec. 4 in the Big Ten openers for both. Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 23 points, Derik Queen had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Maryland built a 40-point lead en route to the blowout. The Terps’ 33-point halftime lead equaled the largest for any Big Ten team in a regular-season conference game since the 1996-97 season. Maryland’s previous best was a 28-point margin against Rutgers on Jan. 6, 2016. Maryland leads 12-11 all-time. The overall point total in the 23 meetings is also close as the Buckeyes have scored just two more points, 1,632-1,630.
