Writer’s Analysis on the Breeders Cup Races Happenning this Weekend

BC Classic Odds Analysis

Newgate is the top overlay play

Bob Baffert trained Newgate must make a trip from post-13.

If LanFranco Dettori, one of the greatest jockeys in history, can make that trip, Newgate is an obvious overlay win play at 20-1.

The Into Mischief sired 4 year old lost by a neck to Subsandor and National Treasure in the Grade 1 California Crown.

Newgate has the breeding and has been tearing it up in the mornings.

So if you’re looking for an overlay, Newgate might be your play.

Next will be tested for class but might be worth a bet if the 8/1 odds hold

Third choice on the morning line Next must make a massive jump in class.

Horses jumping in class don’t always hold their form.

There’s no obvious reason why.

It’s a fact, though.

If Next can hold it’s form, the winner of 7 straight could be a nice play at 8/1 odds.

Next, like Newgate, must make a trip from post position 14.

That isn’t easy to do at Del Mar, which might explain why the winner of 13-of-23 offers a healthy morning line.

In any case, if you believe jockey Luan Machado, who has been Next’s regular jockey since 2022, gets the horse out with zero issues, Next is worth a look to upset the fave, City of Troy.

Fierceness is an underlay at 3/1 because a bounce should happen

Todd Pletcher’s top 3 year old and the winner of the Travers Stakes in August has run two straight excellent races.

Fierceness not only held off Thorpedo Anna in the Travers but also won the Jim Dandy, the Travers prep.

Still, Fierceness is tough to back at 3/1.

The horse wants to run on the lead and quality front runners like Newgate and Next won’t yield an easy lead to the 3 year old.

Also, the Pletcher horse has bounced in a negative way in the past.

Another bounce could happen.

Expect decent odds if you want to back Fierceness to win.

Writer’s Picks on the Breeders Cup Races Happenning this Weekend

2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic Picks

Win: City of Troy

The 5/2 morning line chalk should probably be 8/5 in this.

City of Troy has won 6-of-7 lifetime and has taken 3 Grade 1 victories in a row.

Aidan O’Brien trains.

We know Coolmore and Aidan had options with this monster of a thoroughbred.

The fact City of Troy shows up in the Classic speaks volumes.

Although all the wins were on grass, City of Troy calls Triple Crown winner Justify dad, which means the dirt breeding is there.

Also, unlike some of his top competitors, City of Troy breaks from post 3 where Ryan Moore can decide to run close to the lead, off by a couple of lengths, or launch a closing bid at the half mile pole.

Place: Newgate

Baffert often brings a top contender to the Classic.

Newgate has that look.

If the post position draw had yielded 7, 8, or 9, Newgate might be worth betting to beat City of Troy.

But in post position 13, Dettori is going to have to work to get Newgate into position for the win.

Also, the California Crown was a tough race.

So Newgate might be tired.

In any case, the Baffert magic could be alive and well, which makes Newgate a top three choice.

Third: Ushba Tesoro

The Saudi Cup winner also finished second in the Dubai World Cup.

In fact, in 4 races this year, 3 of the races were Grade 1 rated, Ushba Tesoro has 2 seconds and 2 firsts.

Ushba Tesoro prepped in an allowance where the horse finished second.

That race could be the reason the morning line is so nice.

Don’t be fooled.

Japanese trainer Noboru Takagi used the allowance as a prep, meaning he had no desire to push Ushba for the win.

Ushba Tesoro will be at the top of his game.

If Next and City of Troy falter, the Saudi Cup winner can take the Classic.

Fourth: Next

Going up in class is a big deal.

The reason is because Next hasn’t come close to facing competition like it will on Saturday in any other race during its career.

Not only that but breaking from post position 14 isn’t ideal.

It especially isn’t ideal since Next must break to the outside of Newgate and like Newgate wants to run on or near the lead.

Also, Next’s speed may not carry over into Grade 1 competition.

Fourth seems like the ceiling for this runner.

Next Breeders’ Cup Classic Race

Dornoch’s Belmont victory serves as a stark reminder that anything can happen in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

While established names like Whirlwind and Tenacious will attract attention based on their pedigree, analyzing the Breeders’ Cup morning line odds goes deeper than just past accomplishments.

Factors like a horse’s running style, compatibility with the Breeders’ Cup track, and recent performances against Classic-caliber competition are all crucial elements to consider when crafting your wagers.

Dornoch upset the field at this year’s Belmont Stakes, putting a cap on one of the most intriguing Triple Crown Seasons in history.

We now turn our attention to the Travers Stakes for three-year-olds at Saratoga in August and this November’s Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar.

What horses should be on your radar to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November?

Check out predicted horse racing odds, analysis, and early picks for this year’s Classic.

Early 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic Picks

Win: First Mission

The Brad Cox trained runner had a horrible Pegasus World Cup.

Since then, First Mission has become one of the top older horses in North America, winning the Grade 3 Essex and Grade 2 Alysheba.

The Godolphin bred and campaigned runner appears to be getting better with each race.

If First Mission takes his BC Classic prep, the Stephen Foster, then consider him a legit favorite to win the Classic.

Betting First Mission to Win

2024 Wins: 67% | Earnings: $808,910
May 5th, 2021 in Kentucky by Street Sense out of Elude
Dark Bay or Brown Colt

Belmont Odds: 10/1
Belmont Win Pick: First Mission | Betting Breeders’ Cup Lines

Place: White Abbario

The Grade 1 Saudi Cup run was a complete disaster.

White Abbario went off one of the favorites and finished a distant, we mean distant, tenth.

No worries. The 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner is back in Richard Dutrow’s barn.

Dutrow will find a way to get Abbario back on track. So we should expect the projected to chalk to show up with a big win in a major Classic prep before the repeat try at Del Mar.

Betting White Abbario to Win

2024 Wins: 0% | Earnings: $240,000
March 17th, 2021 in Kentucky by Race Day out of Catching Diamonds

Belmont Odds: 10/1

Show: Senor Buscador

Buscador followed up a win in the Grade 1 Saudi Cup, one of the most prestigious horse races in the world, with a third in the Dubai World Cup, also one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.

Senor has an advantage over his rivals because Del Mar is his home track.

A prep in the Pacific Classic in July is on the table.

But although Senor Buscador has home track advantage, he’s tough to back because he’s a straight up closer and quality speed will show up to run in the Classic.

Third is a logical placing for this talented runner.

Betting Senor Buscador to Win

2024 Wins: 33% | Earnings: $11,773,000
May 5th, 2021 in Kentucky by Mineshaft out of Rose’s Desert

Belmont Odds: 10/1
Belmont Show Pick: Senor Buscador | Betting Breeders’ Cup Lines

Fourth: Arabian Knight

Time is running out for Bob Baffert to get his monster front runner ready for a BC Classic try.

Arabian Knight has the talent to win every race in which he enters.

Still, the BC Classic projects to come up deep with front runners and stalkers, which means Knight, like he did last year, will have to contend with White Abbario.

Also, National Treasure may go for the Classic this year instead of running in the BC Dirt Mile.

We’ll have to wait and see what Bob decides to do with is top older horses.

Randomized and Pretty Mischievous have legit chances to beat Idiomatic, Clariere, and Adare Manor

Brad Cox trained 4-year-old filly Idiomatic projects as the morning line chalk. Adare Manor, the Bob Baffert trained 4-year-old filly, will have home track advantage. Clariere hails from Steve Asmussen’s barn.

But although all three of those older horses will be difficult to beat, Chad Brown trained Randomized and Pretty Mischievous, the Kentucky Oaks winner, have legit chances to upset their older peers.

Pretty Mischievous barely missed in the Grade 1 Cotillion in her last. Before the second in the Cotillion, the Brendan Walsh trained runner had won 3 straight Grade 1 races, the Oaks, the Acorn, and the Test.

Randomized is 4-for-6 and has won 3 straight, including taking the Grade 1 Alabama and scoring a win in the Grade 2 Beldame. Randomized will pressure Idiomatic from the start, possibly setting the race up for Pretty Mischievous, which runs from off the pace.

Wet Paint may improve enough to pull off the upset victory

If horseplayers are looking for a 3-year-old underdog with a chance, Wet Paint might be the one to back. Brad Cox trains Blame sired miss.

Wet Paint broke from the Kentucky Derby gate the favorite. She finished fourth. Since then, she’s been working her way into the upper echelon in the 3-year-old filly division.

Although she didn’t win the Alabama in her last, she finished second and posted a nice speed figure. Cox has put in some decent works, including a 5 furlong move on October 22 in 1:00. Wet Paint should provide the best performance of her career on Nov. 4. So give her a big shot at underdog odds.

3 Year Old Fillies in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff

  • Randomized +800
  • Pretty Mischievous +1000
  • Wet Paint +1200
  • Hoosier Philly +3300
  • Sabra Tuff +5000

Horseplayers expect 3-year-olds to rule the Breeders’ Cup Classic

Unlike the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Classic, where older horse Flightline dominated the competition, the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic should be a great race.

Right now, horse betting players are backing the top 3-year-olds: Belmont and Travers winner Arcangelo, Pacific Classic winner Arabian Knight, and Pacific Classic second place finisher Geaux Rocket Ride.

Kentucky Derby winner Mage and Pennsylvania Derby winner Saudi Crown are also in the mix. Saudi Crown has the look of an absolute monster. The Brad Cox trained runner has breeding to win this. Sire Always Dreaming won the 2017 Kentucky Derby.

Derma Sotogake has been on the bench since the Kentucky Derby. The Japanese trained runner is a quality horse. If Derma shows up at Santa Anita ready to run his best, he could be a player.

King of Steel shouldn’t offer 33-to-1 odds. The equine has zero breeding to race over dirt, but Roger Varian is one of the best trainers in the world.

Todd Pletcher puts the saddle on Dreamlike. The second place finisher behind Saudi Crown in the Pennsylvania Derby has the makings of a top Classic contender. Gun Runner sired and Time to Tap, a Tapit broodmare, are Dreamlike’s parents. The current odds make Dreamlike the best overlay in the Classic.

2023 Breeders’ Cup News Before Monday’s Draw

Geaux Rocket Ride is out and so is Derby winner Mage

Richard Mandella’s Geaux Rocket Ride would have gone off the second choice in the betting behind Belmont and Travers star Arcangelo to win the BC Classic.

On Friday, Geaux Rocket Ride stumbled in midstretch during a workout and suffered a condylar fracture. Jockey Mike Smith pulled the Mandella three-year-old up as soon as possible and held up the leg while waiting for a horse ambulance.

There’s no word on whether Geaux Rocket Ride will or did survive a weekend surgery. For sure, the talented runner’s racing career is over.

Mage, the Kentucky Derby winner, doesn’t want to run. Trainer Gustavo Delgado said the horse has no appetite, which is a sign a vacation is in order. It makes sense because Mage has had a tough 2023, winning the Derby and then Preakness, Haskell, and Travers.

Senor Buscador and Zandon become top closers in the Classic

Because Geaux Rocket Ride had to scratch, the two best closers in the race become Chad Brown trained Zandon and Senor Buscador from the Todd Fincher barn.

Zandon heads to the Classic after having won the Grade 2 Woodward at Belmont Park in the last. The third place finisher in the 2022 Kentucky Derby turned on the jets in the Woodward at the top of the stretch to easily roll by Film Star and Law Professor.

Zandon takes a major step up in class but should benefit from what will be a fast pace.

Senor Buscador will also benefit. Buscador is a straight up closer, often rallying from as far back as 11 lengths at the first call. Buscador loves west coast Buscador won the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar this year and finished third in the Awesome Again Stakes on Sep 30.

If the pace is right, Senor Buscador could pull off a major upset victory.

Pletcher waiting until the last moment to decide Dreamlike’s BC race

Todd Pletcher didn’t rush three-year-old colt Dreamlike to the Triple Crown. Instead, Pletcher allowed Dreamlike to work his way into Breeders’ Cup contention.

Pletcher thinks so much of his three-year-old that he ran Dreamlike in the Grade 2 Woodward before the Gun Runner sired colt had broken the maiden.

Dreamlike almost caught Saudi Crown in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby. The race was at 1 1/8 miles. Pletcher has yet to decide if he will run Dreamlike in the Classic or in the Dirt Mile.

If Todd goes to the Dirt Mile, Dreamlike must beat Cody’s Wish. But if Pletcher goes for the Classic, Dreamlike gets to take on many of his peers, Arabian Knight, Saudi Crown again, and  Arcangelo. The guess here is that since Dreamlike appears to be crying out for more ground, Todd will enter his up and coming three-year-old into the Classic.

Locked, trained by Todd Pletcher, is the 7/2 morning line favorite. The Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity winner faces stiff competition from a couple of Bob Baffert runners, Prince of Monaco and Muth.

Pletcher’s other entrant, Fierceness will attract action. Longshots with a chance include Wine Me Up, a Baffert runner, and The Wine Steward from the Mike Maker barn.

Although Cody will be the chalk, speed players are going to dump on Baffert runner National Treasure. The Preakness Stakes winner should get the front all to himself. Skippylongstocking and Charge it will also attract action.

The morning line suggests Idiomatic and Adare Manor duke it out. But although those two equines should be the favorites, Chad Brown saddles a couple that project to challenge the faves.

Search Results has the talent to win the BC Distaff. Randomized is on a 3-race win streak and has won 4-of-6. At a 6-to-1 morning line, Randomized, no doubt, will go off the wise guy choice.

Clariere, Wet Paint, and Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous are classy. All three would have to improve to challenge Idiomatic, Adare Manor, Search Results, and Randomized, though.

Arcangelo, the morning line favorite, has scratched. The Travers and Belmont winner had a problem with his left hind foot on Tuesday morning.

Arcangelo’s scratch means Baffert star Arabian Knight will go off the favorite. White Abbario and Ushba Tesoro should attract some action.

If horseplayers are looking to back an overlay underdog, they should check out Dreamlike. The Todd Pletcher trained 3-year-old improved big time in the Pennsylvania Derby and Saudi Crown should push Arabian Knight in the early stages. The Pletcher closer has the look of a major upsetter.

No Arcangelo Means Arabian Knight will Be the Chalk

The Belmont and Travers winner was the 5-to-2 morning line favorite. Now that Arcangelo won’t run, favoritism to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic will fall to Pacific Classic winner Arabian Knight.

Bob Baffert has won the Breeders’ Cup Classic four times. Every Baffert Classic winner had the same profile as Arabian Knight, a front runner or presser.

Horseplayers know this. So Arabian Knight will go off the chalk.

Randomized Getting Buzz

Three-year-old Chad Brown trained Randomized is generating a lot of buzz. The Grade 1 Alabama and Grade 2 Beldame winner has the ability to rate right off favorite Idiomatic before running past the Breeders’ Cup Distaff chalk in the stretch.

Also, outside of Idiomatic and Randomized, there doesn’t appear to be a ton of speed in the race. The Brown winner has led gate to wire in a 1 1/8 miles race, the Beldame, and a 1 ¼ miles race, the Alabama. So horseplayer enthusiasm appears warranted.

Oddsmakers Declare Tamara and Good Night Olive the Likeliest Favorites to Score a BC Victory

Tamara is at 4-to-5 on the morning line to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Good Night Olive is at 6-to-5 to win the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

Based on past performances, both Tamara and Good Night Olive should be the favorites in their respective races. But both will also face stiff competition and could bounce after terrific performances in their last.

The biggest threat to Tamara is +300 morning line and Todd Pletcher trained Candied. The Grade 1 Alcibiades winner keeps Luis Saez and won the Alcibiades around two turns and at 1 1/16 miles. Tamara has never even raced around two turns.

Good Night Olive faces a true challenger in Society. The Steve Asmussen trainee has won her last 2 races by 10 ½ lengths and 5 ½. Society also offers an overlay +400 morning line.

Racing Favorites: Declare Tamara and Good Night Olive | Bet Breeders’ Cup Classic Odds to Win

Breeders’ Cup Buzz Longshots Includes | Casa Creed in the Mile, Nakatomi in the Sprint, and Dreamlike in the Classic

Casa Creed is at a +800 morning line to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile. The Bill Mott trained runner heads to Santa Anita after 2 straight graded wins at Saratoga in August. For sure, Creed can get it done.

Nakatomi is at 20-to-1 odds to win the BC Sprint. The second place finisher in the Grade 3 Phoenix behind Hoist the Gold had to go 3 wide and then 6 wide. The presence of Luis Saez makes Nakatomi an overlay at the +2000 odds.

Dreamlike won’t go off at 30-to-1. The Todd Pletcher trained runner closed like a freight train in the 1 1/8 Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby to lose by just a half length to Saudi Crown. If the Penn Derby was at 1 ¼ miles, Dreamlike may have won by 5 to 10 lengths, the last quarter was so fast. Give Dreamlike a much better shot to win the Classic than the +3000 odds imply.

Todd Pletcher Gets Suspended | Early Breeders’ Cup Classic News

Forte’s trainer, Todd Pletcher, must serve a 14-day suspension. Although the suspension won’t hurt Forte’s preparation for the Travers Stakes, we must call into question whether Forte’s brilliance as a 2-year-old, and earlier this year, may have been aided by medication.

To be clear, we’re not making judgements regarding Todd Pletcher’s use of banned medication. But we have to think about whether or not Forte is the same horse off medication.

Forte ran okay in the Belmont Stakes but he wasn’t great. He certainly didn’t run like a favorite, barely beating stablemate Tapit Trice. At this point, Forte offers severely underlaid odds.

Cody’s Wish is the Breeders’ Cup Classic Favorite

Bill Mott said Grade 1 Metropolitan winner Cody’s Wish will point towards the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Cody’s next race will be either the Grade 1 Whitney or the Grade 1 Forego.

It’s likely Mott enters Cody into the Grade 1 Whitney. It’s a longer race and Bill will get a chance to see if Cody can get the BC Classic distance. Based on Cody’s breeding, sired by Curlin and from a Tapit mare, the Mott monster should have no trouble running and winning races up to 1 ½ miles, much less 1 ¼.

If you agree, jump all over the +700 odds. Cody’s Wish is the best horse on the list. He could win the Breeders’ Cup Classic by daylight.

Arcangelo Received a 102 Beyer for Winning the Belmont Stakes

On June 10, Arcangelo proved he was the best three-year-old in the nation, maybe, the world. Not only did Arcangelo win the Belmont Stakes, but he won it by daylight, dominating Forte and the rest of the Belmont field.

Arc wasn’t far off the pace. Then when jockey Javier Castellano pushed the go button on Arc, the Jenna Antonucci trained horse spurted away from his competitors. If Arcangelo improves this summer, the +900 odds will look like a gift.

If you believe in the Arrogate sired runner, grab the +900 while you can.

2022 Top Stakes to Bet On: Breeders’ Cup Highlights Weekend Action

Previous Betting News

The 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships take place this Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Bob Baffert trained Cave Rock headlines a terrific group of 2-year-olds in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Then on Saturday, Flightline puts his undefeated record on the line in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. See below for more information on six of this weekend’s top Breeders’ Cup races.

Horse Racing Odds, Picks, and Betting Analysis | October 31st Edition

Keeneland | Friday, Nov. 4 – Saturday, Nov. 5

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies – 1 1/16 miles dirt – 2 year old fillies

Todd Pletcher trained Chocolate Gelato will face off against Brad Cox trained Chop Chop and Wonder Wheel from the Mark Casse barn.

Top underdog plays include And Tell Me No Lies from from the Peter Miller barn, Steve Asmussen trained Grand Love and another Todd Pletcher runner, Anatomically.

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – 1 1/16 miles dirt – 2 year old colts

Expect Baffert trained Cave Rock, who has a 104 Beyer figure on the resume, to go off at even money or less. Cave Rock looks like the real deal. So beating him will require some creativity.

Todd Pletcher trained Forte should offer second choice odds. Forte is a two-time grade one winner. So if Rock doesn’t show up with his best, the Pletcher runner could prevail.

Chad Brown trained Blazing Sevens, Cave Rock stablemate National Treasure, Verifying from the Brad Cox barn, and Tom Amoss’ Curly Jack will also attract action.

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint – 6 furlongs dirt – 3 year olds and up

On paper, Steve Asmussen trained Jackie’s Warrior and Chad Brown runner Jack Cristopher should dominate the field. Ah, but there is a lot of speed in the race.

Aloha West is back to defend his title. If a pace meltdown happens, West could complete the repeat.

Even if the pace doesn’t meltdown, Wesley Ward trained 4-year-old filly Kimari is good enough to upset the chalk. Revisit the Sprint once the field is set and don’t forget that Jackie’s Warrior finished off the board as the favorite last year.

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf -1  ½ miles on turf – 3 year olds and up

Charlie Appleby trained Nation’s Pride will go off the chalk. Joining Pride as one of the favorites will be John Gosden trained and 2020 Saudi Cup winner Mishriff.

The United’s States’ best shot of winning the turf rests on a couple of mares. War Like Goddess runs for Bill Mott and Virginia Joy hails from the Chad Brown barn. Both will have to run the race of their lives to have any shot of beating Nation’s Pride or Mishriff.

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff – 1 1/8 miles on dirt – 3 year old fillies and up

Todd Pletcher will saddle the top two favorites in this Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Belmont Stakes second place finisher Nest should go off the chalk.

Malathaat will go off second choice. Steve Asmussen has the third choice in Clairiere. Search Results, Society, and Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath will all attract money.

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic – 1 ¼ miles on dirt – 3 year olds and up

Undefeated John Sadler trained Flightline is 3-to-5 on the morning line. Steve Asmussen is going to try and beat Flightline with Travers Stakes winner Epicenter.

The 5-to-1 second choice will have to improve from the Travers Stakes victory. Life Is Good, the Todd Pletcher trained runner, is third choice at 6-to-1. If you believe in Flightline and the odds remain at the morning line, consider. Right now, the Sadler runner looks like one of the best horses to ever run over dirt.

2021 Breeders’ Cup Betting Update: Seven Grade Races to Wager On

Horse Racing Odds & Picks November 1st Edition

Top Stakes Races for the Week

When: Friday, Nov. 5 – Saturday, Nov. 6

2021 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar Racetrack – Friday, Nov. 5

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies – 1 1/6 miles dirt – $2,000,000

Steve Asmussen trained Echo Zulu should be odds on to win the Juvenile Fillies. Zulu has been sensational in every one of her races. Brad Cox puts the saddle on Juju’s Map, who may go off second choice. Don’t discount Nest from the Todd Pletcher barn. She broke her maiden at first asking and Pletcher is a master with juveniles.

Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – 1 1/16 miles dirt – $2,000,000

Although most expect a full field for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, betting dollars will settle around Chad Brown trained Jack Cristopher and Bob Baffert’s Corniche. Both have raced great this year. Corniche is the likely favorite because the Breeders’ Cup happens at Del Mar, a track Bob knows very well.

2021 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar Racetrack – Saturday, Nov. 6

Grade 1 – Breeders’ Cup Mile – 1 mile turf – $2,000,000

Palace Pier would have been a favorite. But most horseplayers don’t believe Palace Pier runs. If few European horses show up for the BC Mile, or none show up, the favorite could end up Chad Brown trained Raging Bull or Got Stormy from the Mark Casse barn.

Grade 1 – Breeders’ Cup Sprint – 6 furlongs dirt – $2,000,000

Most feel the Breeders’ Cup Sprint is Jackie’s Warrior’s to lose. But although Jackie looks tough, Firenze Fire, Special Reserve, and Dr. Schivel are no joke. If you’re looking for a closer with a shot, consider backing Aloha West. The Wayne Catalano trainee has a serious turn of foot.

Grade 1 – Breeders’ Cup Distaff – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $200,000

On paper, Letruska is unbeatable. However, she barely held off Chad Brown trained Royal Flag in the Grade 3 Shuvee at Saratoga in August. Royal Flag, a closer, has won 2-of-3. If Letruska faces pace pressure, there’s a chance the Brown trainee gets past her on Saturday.

Grade 1 – Breeders’ Cup Turf – 1 ½ miles turf – $4,000,000

2020 BC Turf winner may run in the Filly & Mare Turf. That would be a mistake. The second-place Arc de Triomphe winner could dominate this field. Yibir will be tough, but none of the American horses look capable of beating Tarnawa.

Grade 1 – Breeders’ Cup Classic – 1 ¼ miles dirt – $6,000,000

Can Knick Go wire the Breeders’ Cup Classic field? That’s the big question. The Brad Cox trainee has never won at 1 ¼ miles. Not only that, but the last time Knicks Go faced speed like what he will see from Hot Rod Charlie and Art Collector, he folded. If there’s a meltdown, Cox’s other runner, Belmont winner Essential Quality, and Steve Asmussen trained Max Player could pick up the pieces.

2021 Breeders’ Cup Betting Update: Letruska Dominates in Final BC Prep

Previous Betting News

In about three weeks, the best horses in the world descend upon Del Mar to run in the 2021 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. The final preps for this year’s Breeders’ Cup happened over the weekend. Which horses displayed the talent required to win their BC race? Check out top plays, Horse Racing Odds and the latest news in our 2021 Breeders’ Cup Betting update.  You can also visit our Online Racebook to place your bets on active racetracks.

Letruska Won Her 5th Straight Race and Heads to the Breeder’s Cup As Clear Favorite

2021 Breeders’ Cup

When: Friday, Nov. 5 – Saturday, Nov. 6

Letruska destroys the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Field

Fausto Gutierrez trained Letruska won her fifth straight graded race on Sunday. The Super Saver sired mare got an easy lead in the Grade 1 Spinster and never looked back.

The future hall of fame mare should be the likeliest winner at this year’s Breeders’ Cup. That is, she’s the likeliest winner if she runs in the Distaff and not the Classic.

No doubt, Letruska can run 1 ¼ miles. But she’s a front runner who is likely to face Brad Cox trained Knicks Go in the Classic. There’s no way Letruska keeps up with Knicks Go, which is why Fausto will likely enter Letruska in the Distaff.

Bell’s the One and Golden Pal win stakes

A couple of other horses stamped themselves as possible Breeders’ Cup entrants. Bell’s the One took the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America at Keeneland.

Bell ran into a super-fast pace and held off Club Car and Estilo Talentoso for the victory. The Neil Pessin trained miss won’t go off the chalk in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint if Bob Baffert’s Gamine runs. But she should offer decent odds and if you think a horse softens up Bob’s beast, she might be the play.

Golden Pal could offer lesser odds to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint than Letruska offers to win the BC Distaff. The Wesley Ward runner won his fourth race in his last five.

Pal’s only loss in the last the five was in the Grade 1 Nurthrope at York versus monsters Winter Power, Emaraaty Ana and Dragon Symbol. None of those European stars plan on racing in the Turf Sprint.

The Ward runner should take the lead at Del Mar, which is known to have a fast grass course, and go gate to wire.

Royal Flag wins the Beldame

Chad Brown trained Royal Flag won the Grade 1 Beldame Invitational. Brown has yet to say whether he will run Flag against Letruska in the BC Distaff.

The two bumped head in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga over the summer. Letruska held on to finish first, Bonny South finished second, and Royal Flag clocked in at third.

Flag is a closer, which means for her to have any shot of catching Letruska, another horse must throw down with the Distaff chalk from the outset. If that doesn’t happen, Royal Flag will have a tough time.

So Chad is probably going to wait to see if Letruska will face pressure in the Distaff before announcing Royal Flag’s next race.

Special Reserve holds off Aloha West to win the Grade 2 Phoenix

The final sprint prep of the year provided a couple of BC Sprint contenders. Special Reserve and Aloha West both ran terrific in the Grade 2 Phoenix.

Special Reserve is a serious race horse. The Mike Maker trained runner ran right off a 21.90 quarter mile and 44.69 half. The talented runner had enough left in the tank to hold off top closing sprinter Aloha West.

In the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, both Special Reserve and Aloha West could get a fantastic setup. Jackie’s Warrior will grab the lead early, but there will be plenty of pace on for Special Reserve to track and for Aloha West to close into.

We’ll have to wait to see who exactly enters into the BC Sprint. Right now, a repeat finish of the Grade 2 Phoenix looks promising.

2020 Breeders’ Cup Classic Odds Update & Expert Analysis

Previous Betting News

The Breeders’ Cup this year takes place on Saturday, November 7 at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, KY. For a while, some believed the 2020 Breeders’ Cup might not happen. After a successful Kentucky Derby and Preakness, though, the thoroughbred industry believes they can put on a great BC event. Check out top plays and Horse Racing Odds from Breeders Cup for Friday, Nov. 6 – Saturday, Nov. 7. You can also visit our Online Racebook to place your bets on active racetracks.

Updated Breeders’ Cup Classic Odds: Improbable Now Favored

2020 Breeders’ Cup Classic

When: November 7, 2020
Where: Keeneland Racecourse, Lexington, KY

Which horses at +1000 or less offer overlay odds to win the BC Classic?

Charlatan probably won’t run, making him a bad wager. Cross the other Bob Baffert trained horse off the list. Of the other three Baffert trained runners, Maximum Security’s form started going south in the Grade 1 Awesome Again. He finished second behind Improbable, but Maximum Security had to race hard to do it.

Improbable offers low odds, much too low to consider backing. The other Baffert runner, Authentic, faces a ton of pace pressure. Still, if you’re looking to back a Bob Baffert trained horse, Authentic is the one.

If Swiss Skydiver’s connections decide to run her in the Classic instead of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, she’s the play. The Daredevil sired, Kenny McPeek trained, runner beat Authentic to win the Preakness Stakes. She can hang with these.

If Skydiver doesn’t go in the Classic, the top play among the +1000 or less choices is Tom’s d’Etat. Trained by Albert Stall, the Smart Strike sired 7-year-old horse had won four in a row, including the Grade 1 Clark Handicap, before finishing third as the favorite in the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga in August. Tom’s d’Etat stumbled at the start of that race. The Stall runner could provide a bounce back performance on Nov. 7 and deserves a look at the decent +800 odds.

Name a horse at +1600 odds or higher that can take the Classic on Nov. 7?

At +2500, By My Standards offers overlay odds to take the BC Classic. The William Calhoun trained equine couldn’t get to Improbable in the Whitney. Standards could turn the tables on that rival in the Classic, though.

The Goldencents sired runner won the Grade 2 Alysheba at Churchill Downs in his last. That could be a sign his form is turning around for the better. If it is, he’ll be a tough horse to deal with on Nov. 7.

Undefeated Happy Saver looks like a monster. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the 3-year-old Super Saver sired runner is undefeated in four starts.

He’s so talented that Pletcher skipped the Derby and the Preakness and instead ran Happy Saver in the Jockey Club Gold Cup where he put a beating onto both Tacitus, the odds on favorite, and Mystic Guide.

Is there a horse not listed that can take the Breeders’ Cup Classic?

We didn’t add Mystic Guide to the list. The second place finisher in the Jockey Club Gold Cup may have caught Happy Saver if the Pletcher runner had faced more pressure early on.

Mystic Guide is a talented horse. The 3-year-old owned by Godolphin and sired by Ghostzapper could take the Classic if the setup is right. Don’t discount if Godolphin decides to run Mystic Guide in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

2017 Breeder’s Cup Betting Preview & Expert Prediction

Previous Betting News

In the world of horse racing, its the Triple Crown that gets most of the attention, but it can be argued that the Breeders Cup is actually a bigger event than any single race. The Breeders Cup takes place over two days of racing and features no less than 13 Grade I races that feature the best horses in the world. The event goes to different tracks each year, with the 2017 Breeders Cup set for Del Mar in San Diego on November 3rd and 4th, and with the latest horse racing odds plus this Breeder’s Cup betting preview you will be ready to enjoy the action from a different perspective.

The beauty of all the races that take place here is that they are not limited to horses of a certain age, as is the case with the Kentucky Derby, which means we can see returning champions hit the turf in defense of their crown. The highlight of the two days of racing will come on Saturday with the running of the Breeders’ Cup Classic. All the biggest races are reserved for Saturday, so let’s take a closer look at each.

2017 Breeder’s Cup Betting Preview & Expert Prediction

Event Information

Inaugurated: 1984
Track: Left-handed
Location: Del Mar Racetrack
Race type: Thoroughbred
Surface: Turf, Dirt
Purse: Between $1 – $6 million

Top Races

14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies

Purse: $2 million

This is one of the races where an age restriction does apply, as it is reserved for 2-year old’s. The girls will run 1 1/16 mile, with the winner of this one likely to be named the best 2-year old female horse of the year. There is a $2 million purse up for grabs in this one, so a big start to the day.

Filly & Mare Turf

Purse: $2 million

There is a very talented field of horses entered into this 1 1/8-mile race for horses aged 3 and up, all of whom will be looking for a share of the $2 million purse. Queen’s Trust and Lady Eli are the early joint favorites for this one, but also expect to see Sistercharlie and Antonoe get a lot of the betting money. This race may well be the toughest to handicap given the level of talent here.

Twin Spires Sprint

Purse: $1.5 million

If it’s speed you want to see, look no further than this 6-furlong race that features some of the fastest horses in the world. The purse for this one is set at $1.5 million, and look for this group to go hard after the money when they turn into the home stretch.

Sentient Jet Juvenile

Purse: $2 million

Another on restricted to 2-year old’s, and also the richest race for that age group on the North American racing circuit. The purse here is $2 million, with many of the horses featuring in this race likely to be on the 2018 Kentucky derby roster.

Turf Sprint

Purse: $1 million

With just 7 horses to choose from, the Turf Sprint features one of the smallest fields at the Breeders Cup, but like every race here, it’s a talented bunch. Racing 6 furlongs over grass for a purse of $1 million, the horses in this group are likely going to be chasing down the 2017 Breeder’s Cup Betting favorite Lady Aurelia, the clear favorite in this race.

Longines Turf

Purse: $4 million

A huge field of 14 will contest this mile and a half race that comes with a purse of $4 million. Highland Reel won this race last year and will be back to defend the crown as the early favorite. The biggest challenger to the champion is likely to be Oscar Performance, although any of these horses could pull off the upset with a clean ride.

Filly and Mare Sprint

Purse: $2 million

A 7-furlong sprint featuring some of the fastest horses in the world racing for a share of the $1 million purse. Finest City will be back to defend her crown here, but the early favorite for this one is Vale Dori.

Breeders’ Cup Mile

Purse: $2 million

A $2 million purse is on the line for this group, and it’s a talented bunch that will be in the starting gate for this one. Tourist, the horse that won it last year, will not be racing, but look for the likes of Ribchester, Barney Roy, and Churchill to be up amongst the leaders coming down the stretch.

Breeders’ Cup Classic

Purse: $6 million

For general fans and Breeder’s Cup Betting enthusiasts, this is the big one. Run over a 1 and a quarter, the Classic will feature a group of horses that are absolutely the best in the business. Arrogate won it last year and will be back again looking for a share of the $6 million purse. Gun Runner and Collected look to be his main threats.

2016 Breeder’s Cup California Chrome Expert Predictions

Previous Betting News

At this stage of his career, California Chrome has nothing left to prove, but when he runs in the $6 million Breeders Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Saturday November 5, he will be chasing history. If California Chrome can come up with the win, he will be the only Kentucky Derby winner to win the BC Classic as a 5-year old. It’s surprising that this horse is racing at all, as an animal of this pedigree is usually shut down and put out to stud once his 3-year old season ends. This horse loves to race, though, and he is continuing to rack up big wins, and the resulting horse racing prize money, to this day.

In Depth Analysis On The 2016 Breeder’s Cup California Chrome Expert Predictions

California Chrome Breeders Cup History

This will be the second time that California Chrome will race in the BC Classic. His last run came in 2014, the same year that he waltzed away with the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. His bid for Triple Crown glory was denied at the Belmont Stakes that year, and his third-place performance at the Classic was considered by many to be a bit of a disappointment. You get the sense that things might be a little different this time around, though, especially now that Nyquist has been forced to withdraw. As his name suggests, this is a horse that loves the West Coast tracks, and Santa Anita would appear to be the perfect venue for him to race at.

Current Form and Biggest Challengers

California Chrome has raced 6 times in 2016, and has taken the wire in every race, racking up over $7 million in purses in the process. His season started with a win at Santa Anita, before shipping out and winning a couple of big races in Dubai. He returned home in time to win the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, before heading back to Santa Anita to win another pair of stakes races, the latest of which was the Awesome Again Stakes at the start of October.

California Chrome comes into the Breeders Cup Classic as the even money favorite, and there is a better than average chance that the odds will drop a little before post time. This is not to say that there aren’t any thoroughbreds in the 10-horse field that can beat him, because there are a couple. The most obvious choices would be Arrogate (5-2) and Frosted (5-1), with Melatonin (12-1) an outside shot if the race sets up just right for him.

Breeders Cup Classic Prediction

Barring a stumble out the gate or some other unforeseen issue, this race is California Chrome’s for the taking. A lot of people are talking about Arrogate being the main threat, but he is still young and relatively inexperienced. I think the main threat will come from Frosted, and I believe he will come in second to complete the exacta. As far as the trifecta goes, I think you should be looking at adding a longshot to the box ticket. I would take either Melatonin or Effinex in there, with Arrogate rounding out the superfecta ticket.
