Series History
Northeastern and Monmouth will meet for just the fifth time with the series tied 2-2. The Huskies won the last matchup Feb. 16, 2023, 77-62, thanks to a nine-point, 19-rebound effort from Joe Pridgen, tied for the most rebounds by a player in the CAA last season. Monday marks Northeastern’s first trip to West Long Branch since Jan. 2, 1992.
Why Bet on Northeastern Huskies?
The Huskies (5-9) opened CAA play last Thursday with a 62-53 home loss to Stony Brook, which got 21 points from Tyler Stephenson-Moore and shot 54% in the second half. Stephenson-Moore did most of his damage in the second half, going for 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting to help the Seawolves build on what was a one-point halftime lead. He was one of three Seawolves in double figures on the night as SBU finished 38% (21-of-56) from the floor.

Northeastern couldn’t find its rhythm offensively throughout the game, going 20-of-60 overall and 4-of-18 from deep. Chris Doherty led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, while Masai Troutman had a team-high 16 points on 6-of-11 from the floor. Joe Pridgen added eight points to reach 1000 points for his career. Pridgen is one of four Huskies averaging better than 10 points per game with 10.2, along with 5.8 rebounds per game that are second on the team. He’s reached double figures seven times this season.
Doherty has done it all for the Huskies this season, leading the Huskies in scoring (12.6ppg), rebounds (7.1rpg), assists (2.6apg) and blocks (9). He has four double-doubles this season, good for third in the CAA, and leads the league and is 60th in the nation in field goal percentage (56.2%).
The Huskies have hit at least one three point field goal in 308 consecutive games dating back to Dec. 13, 2015. They are averaging 71.4 points per game, up from last season’s 65.3 ppg and 64.3 ppg in 2021-22. Northeastern has already surpassed 80 points three times in 14 games after doing so just twice in each of the last two seasons combined, including a 93-point outburst against Georgia Southern on Nov. 21. It was the first time Northeastern reached the 90-point plateau since Nov. 19, 2019. The Huskies have seen four players score 10+ points seven times in 14 games early in the year. Last season, Northeastern had four players reach double figures in a game just four times.
As a team, Northeastern is fifth in the CAA making an average of 14.7 free throws per game, and 70th in the nation in FT% (74.1). The Huskies went 324-of-473 (68.5%) from the line last season. Northeastern is averaging just 15.1 fouls against per game this season, good for 52nd in the nation and second in the CAA. Northeastern has shot 75 more free throws than its opponents, an average of more than five FTs per game.
The longest-tenured head coach in the CAA, Northeastern’s Bill Coen is second in conference history in combined CAA and tournament wins with 181 and sits two victories from tying Jim Larranaga for first in CAA history. Coen has led the Huskies to a CAA-best four regular-season championships since 2006 and two NCAA tournaments over the last eight seasons. With Brian McDonald, Manny Adako and Joel Smith back on the bench in 2023-24, Northeastern is the only school in the country to have all three assistant coaches play for the head coach at the same school.

Why Bet on Monmouth Hawks?
Monmouth (8-6) opened CAA play last Thursday with a 51-43 win over Towson as the Hawks would take control of the game late putting together a 12-2 run over a six-minute span. Xander Rice scored the final 16 points of the game for Monmouth and finished with 21 overall, his eighth game this season with at least 20. Rice has taken 95 free throws, a Top-30 mark in the nation. The Hawks have started the same lineup in all 14 games.

The 43 points allowed were the lowest given up in a Monmouth win since allowing just 40 to Kennesaw State on November 22, 2019. Towson shot 27.6% from the field, Monmouth’s best field goal % defense since limiting Fairfield to 22.2% on March 4, 2020. Monmouth held Towson off the scoreboard from 7:51 to the :39 second mark of the second half, a 7:12 run of shutout defense. Monmouth limited Towson to 20 and 23 points in each half, the fourth halves MU has held an opponent in the 20’s this year.
MU won its CAA opener for the first time ever. The Hawks outrebounded Towson 45-42, with Towson entering the game 10th nationally in rebounding margin. Each team had 13 offensive rebounds, with Towson coming in second in the country in offensive boards. Jack Collins tied a career-high with 13 rebounds, his fourth double-digit rebounding game this year.
“This was just a tough, they know what we do and we know what they do type of college basketball game. I think the teams are pretty evenly matched and tonight we outlasted them. It could have gone any way, these teams are pretty much even but for us to outrebound Towson is one of the coolest things that we’ve accomplished this year. They are great at that and for us to be able to even battle them, I told our guys if they do like they do to everyone else and get 12 more than us, that’s a hard game to win so I’m so proud of my guys,” Coach King Rice said.
After entering the contest versus Towson ranked 18th nationally in three-point field goal percentage, the Hawks made just one of their 15 long-range attempts. The last time the Hawks won a game where they made one or fewer three pointers was last season’s 61-54 win at Stony Brook where they made zero.
Rice is three wins shy of 200 for his career, all of them coming at Monmouth. He is already the winningest Division I coach in program history, and is aiming to become the first DI coach at MU to reach 200 wins. Monmouth’s all-time winningest coach is Bill Boylan, who won 364 games from 1956-1977. The Hawks are looking to open conference play 2-0 for the first time since joining the CAA and the fourth time under Rice, having done so in 2021-22, 2016-17 and 2014-15, all as a member of the MAAC.
Four of Monmouth’s top seven in minutes played are freshmen or sophomores, including two true freshmen in Abdi Bashir Jr. and Cornelius Robinson, a redshirt freshman in Jaret Valencia and a sophomore and 2023 CAA All-Rookie selection in Collins.
