Alabama (20-3, 9-1 SEC) won its sixth game in a row Saturday, 85-81 at Arkansas. The Tide led by 18 with 6:29 left but Arkansas went on a 13-2 run that helped cut the lead to two with less than a minute to play. But Grant Nelson hit a 3-pointer to restore the Tide’s two-possession lead. Zvonimir Ivisic made one of two free throws to make it 83-81 for the Hogs, but Chris Youngblood hit a pair of free throws in the final four seconds.

Despite converting a season-low five three-pointers in the game, Alabama outscored Arkansas 56-36 inside the paint as Alabama’s frontcourt of Nelson (15 points), Mouhamed Dioubate (14 points) and Clifford Omoruyi (nine points) combined to score 38 points. The Crimson Tide scored 56 points in the paint, matching their season-high. The Tide’s bench outscored Arkansas’ bench 31-11 led by Dioubate’s 14 points.

“Arkansas had been playing well, winning three of four and the issue was we were up 18 and we didn’t close it like we needed to so a lot of credit to Arkansas for not quitting,” Oats said. “They fought, stayed in it and took an 18-point lead with 12 (minutes) to go and cut it to three late in the game. I thought out guys did a decent job of closing once they got it to three. Grant was able to get the put-back and we made a couple of free throws but we have to do a better job of closing. We risked losing a road game that we were supposed to win. A lot of credit to them (Arkansas) because we did not do a good job of closing.”

Freshman forward Derrion Reid missed his fifth game of the season Saturday and remains day-to-day. He’s averaging 7.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 16.9 minutes per game. Alabama has now scored 85 points or more in six straight road games, which is the longest single-season streak by any team in SEC history Alabama is 9-1 in the SEC for the third time under head coach Nate Oats.

Prior to Oats’ arrival, the Tide had not started 9-1 or better since 1986-87 prior to Oats. Earlier Saturday, both No. 1 Auburn and No. 2 Duke lost to Florida and Clemson, respectively, and that opened the door for Bama to rise to No. 1 in the polls.

“Wherever the voters want to put us, it doesn’t matter,” Oats said. “I mean, we’ll be one, two or three, that’s for sure. And I don’t really care. Let’s focus on Texas. Let’s try to win an SEC regular-season championship and let all that other stuff fall where it may.”

Alabama has seven wins over AP Top 25 opponents, tying the program record for most AP wins in a single season set during the 2022-23 campaign. Alabama’s three wins over AP Top-10 teams this year is the most in a season since the 1982-83 season. Since 2004, All-American guard Mark Sears is the 24th player in Division I to have 63 career games scoring 20 points or more and currently the only active player in Division I. Sears is the only player in the SEC to rank in the top-five in both scoring (No. 4, 18.0 ppg) and assists (No. 3, 5.1 apg). During conference play Sears ranks first in assists (6.7 apg) and third in points (18.2 ppg) in the SEC.

Why Bet on Texas?

Texas (15-9, 4-7 SEC) is on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble and off a second straight loss, 86-78 at Vanderbilt on Saturday. The Commodores improved to 12-1 at home by making 7 of 8 free throws in the last 45 seconds as well as MJ Collins getting behind the defense for a press-break dunk. Vandy, down four at halftime, shot 57% (17 of 30) in the second half and made 13 of 15 free throws. It marked UT’s first game inside Memorial Gymnasium on Vanderbilt’s campus since the 1988-89 season.

Freshman guard Tre Johnson registered a team-high 15 points in the loss. Johnson converted 3-of-6 from three-point range and 2-of-3 free throws while tying his career highs in both rebounds (five) and assists (five) in 38 minutes. Senior Arthur Kaluma recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and tied his season high with five assists in 35 minutes, while graduate Kadin Shedrick posted 12 points, six rebounds (five offensive) and tied his season high with four blocked shots in 22 minutes. Graduate Julian Larry tallied 11 points (4-8 FG) and set a season high with five rebounds in 32 minutes, and junior Jordan Pope added 11 points and tied his collegiate career high with seven rebounds in 26 minutes.

The Longhorns held a 54-44 lead following a Julian Larry jumper with 14:04 remaining in the game. Texas led for a total time of 20:54 compared to 16:52 by Vanderbilt.

“I thought it was a game of runs, they had a physicality about themselves in the paint today that we weren’t able to match,” Coach Rodney Terry said. “I think that was really our Achilles [heel] in the game. [Jaylen] Carey did a great job on the glass. He was a man in the paint, second chance opportunities. We just didn’t match that physicality and toughness that we needed to match. Give them credit. They did a good job. They made big shots. They got to the foul line when they had to get to the foul line, and converted what they needed to do in big moments.”

Vanderbilt outrebounded Texas 44-40 including a 17-13 edge on the offensive boards. Both clubs were evenly matched shooting, but it was a tale of two halves as Texas shot 25-of-60 from the field (42%) including 9-of-25 (36%) from three – while the Commodores shot 30-of-71 (42%) from the field and 9-of-27 (33%) from three. However, in the second half, the Longhorns shot 1-of-10 over the final 9:36 of the game – a stretch that saw Vandy go from being down three to ahead by nine points.

Terry’s club entered the game down a pair of guards and saw two other key players fight through injuries. Sixth-man Chendall Weaver missed his ninth straight game with a hip injury, while starter Tramon Mark was ruled out prior to tipoff with a shoulder strain. Larry earned his first start of the season in Mark’s place. Mark is expected back Tuesday and averages 9.6 PPG.

Johnson is one of the top freshmen in the country and leads the SEC in scoring at 19.0 PPG. He has  committed more than one turnover just once in his past seven games. Kaluma leads the team in rebounding (8.1 rpg) and ranks second in scoring (13.4 ppg).

UT has made four-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament (2021-22-23-24). It’s the longest streak by the Longhorns since they made 14-straight NCAA tourney appearances from 1999-2012. However, UT is on the wrong side of the bubble right now so it needs an upset like this. Tuesday’s game is the fourth time this season an opponent has come to the Moody Center that’s been ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 at some point in the season.

“They definitely feel how good this league is,” Terry said of his players. “You literally have to coach every game like it’s an NCAA Tournament game. There are no possessions off. In this league, man, every possession is a big possession and the margin for error that you have in this league is very slim.”
