Key Straight-Up Picks for Week 2 of the 2024 College Football Season

2024 NCAA Division I FBS Football Season | 155th season of college football in the United States
Week 1: Friday, September 6th – Saturday, September 7th, 2024

Betting College Football Week 2 Games

In college football, it’s difficult to find winners against the spread much less to win straight up.

Often, it’s more difficult to find straight up winners that offer a fair payout, which is why the best SU plays of NCAA Week 2 happen in non-high profile matchups like Duke at Northwestern and San Diego State hosting Oregon State.

Keep reading for college football odds, analysis, and picks for six of this week’s best straight up plays.

Writer’s Picks for the Second Week of the NCAAF Season

Duke +125 at Northwestern

Neither team impressed against overmatched squads.

But Northwestern appears to once again have to rely on its defense while the Blue Devils have a solid D, one that gave up 30 rushing yards and 110 yards to Elon, and the better offense.

Quarterback Maalik Murphy transferred from Texas to Duke.

Murphy knows how to run pro style offenses like the one Steve Sarkisian runs in Austin.

Blue Devils pull off the upset victory.

College Football Week 2 Pick: Duke +125

Pittsburgh -102 at Cincinnati

Cincinnati defense gave up 20 points to the Towson Tigers.

The Bearcats looked great on offense.

But 20 points to Towson? Not good.

Pittsburgh dropped 55 onto Kent State.

The difference between Towson and Kent State, although it’s not apparent, is a chasm.

Pat Narduzzi does well recruiting players that can’t make it onto programs like Alabama, Texas, Arizona, USC, or even Boise State.

Often Narduzzi coaches those players into NFL level talents.

Panthers get the win.

College Football Week 2 Pick: Pittsburgh -102

Virginia +102 at Wake Forest

Virginia quarterback Anthony Colandrea is going to be the story in this game.

Colandrea is flying under the radar but he may soon find himself the talk of the ACC.

The UVA quarterback got playing time as a freshman last season.

This NCAAF season he’s already showing how much he’s improved by dominating Richmond.

Sure, Wake Forest is better than Richmond but Colandrea is a rising star.

The Cavaliers score the slight upset victory.

College Football Week 2 Pick: Virginia +102

Texas Tech -110 at Washington State

After watching Texas Tech barely get by Abilene in a 52-51 shootout, it makes no sense to pick the Red Raiders against Washington State.

But it’s apparent that the Raiders didn’t take the matchup versus Abilene Christian seriously.

Not only that, but teams like Abilene Christian often recruit top JUCO talent that can’t find a spot at a Power 4 program.

That’s not an excuse. It’s a fact.

Texas Tech is much better than what it showed.

Also, Washington State is a program without a conference and although the Cougs scored 70 against Portland State, they also gave up 30.

Texas Tech gets it done.

College Football Week 2 Pick: Texas Tech -110

Oregon State at San Diego State +152

It’s tough not like San Diego State in this matchup.

The first reason are the odds.

The Aztecs take on Oregon State, which was one of the top schools in the now defunct Pac 12, at their stadium.

SDSU has had a solid football program for some time.

San Diego State wouldn’t compete against a university like Oregon State if the Beavers hadn’t lost so much talent.

But not finding a place in a conference is a big deal.

The odds make SDSU playable.

College Football Week 2 Pick: San Diego State +152

Mississippi State +188 at Arizona State

I thought Arizona State was going to be awful, but the Sun Devils dominated Wyoming.

No worries. Sometimes it’s important to eat crow.

In any case, I’m against the Sun Devils again.

The reason this time is because Mississippi State is a legit SEC team.

The Bulldogs thrashed Eastern Kentucky behind the arm and legs of one Blake Shapen, the former Baylor starter.

Shapen is a solid college football quarterback and we know for sure that the Bulldogs’ defense is going to pick it up in this.

Miss State scores the upset win.

College Football Week 2 Pick: Mississippi State +188

2023 College Football Week 2 SU Picks | MyBookie Regular Season Betting Preview

2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season | 154th season of college football in the United States
NCAAF Week 2: September 7th – September 9th, 2023

20 Ole Miss Rebels at 24 Tulane Green Wave

SU Odds: Ole Miss Rebels -284; Tulane Green Wave +222
Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 3:30 pm | ESPN 2
Yulman Stadium, New Orleans, LA

The road favored Rebels demolished Mercer 73-7 in their first game. The win implies Ole Miss should have no trouble taking it to Tulane.

But the Green Wave are also 1-0. Not only did Tulane win their first game of the season, but they beat a very good team in South Alabama. The Jaguars are much better than Mercer. If Ole Miss bounces off the big win, Tulane can get it done straight up.

College Football Week 2 SU Pick: Tulane +222 | Bet Ole Miss at Tulane

23 Texas A&M Aggies at Miami Hurricanes

SU Odds: Texas A&M Aggies -204; Miami Hurricanes +164
Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 3:30 pm | FOX
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, FL

The Aggies’ 52-10 victory over New Mexico impresses, but how much? Texas A&M played one of the worst D-1 schools in college football. Also, the vaunted Aggies’ D gave up 10 points.

On Saturday, A&M travels to Miami to face off against a team with a talented defensive line and a good offense. Miami beat Miami Ohio 38-3. So the Canes played against and destroyed the better opponent.

College Football Week 2 SU Pick: Miami +164 | Bet Texas A&M at Miami
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Iowa Hawkeyes at Iowa State Cyclones

SU Odds: Iowa Hawkeyes -196; Iowa State Cyclones +158
Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 3:30 pm | FOX
Jack Trice Stadium, Ames, IA

Iowa State played well in their first contest, beating Northern Iowa 30-9. The Cyclones are going to have to step it up big time to get by the rival Hawkeyes, though.

Iowa took down a solid Utah State program 24-14 in their first game. Iowa should be one of the better teams in the Big Ten West division. Hawkeyes win.

College Football Week 2 SU Pick: Iowa -196 | Bet Iowa at Iowa State
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Cincinnati Bearcats at Pittsburgh Panthers

SU Odds: Cincinnati Bearcats +238; Pittsburgh Panthers -309
Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 6:30 pm | ESPN
Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh, PA

The money line odds don’t make much sense. Pittsburgh is a solid team for sure, but the Panthers got a pass versus Wofford in their first game, blasting the Terriers 45-7.

Cincinnati dropped 66 onto Eastern Kentucky. Pitt should have trouble containing quarterback Emory Jones who threw 5 TD passes and rushed for 2 scores against Eastern Kentucky.

College Football Week 2 SU Pick: Cincinnati +238 | Bet Cincinnati at Pittsburgh
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

11 Texas Longhorns at 3 Alabama Crimson Tide

SU Odds: Texas Longhorns +228; Alabama Crimson Tide -289
Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 7:00 pm | ESPN
Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa, AL

The most high-profile game of College Football Week 2 also has an overlay money line odds road dog. Texas almost beat Alabama last season.

This season, the Longhorns mustn’t deal with Bryce Young or Will Anderson. More importantly, Alabama has issues in their secondary. So Quinn Ewers and Xavier Worthy should hook up with success.

Texas’ D must contain Jalen Milroe. That will happen as the Horns secure one of the most important wins in modern day Texas’ history.

College Football Week 2 SU Pick: Texas +228 | Bet Texas at Alabama
MyBookie Betting Lines for the Game

Arizona Wildcats at Mississippi State Bulldogs

SU Odds: Arizona Wildcats +260; Mississippi State Bulldogs -340
Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 7:30 pm | ESPN Network
Davis Wade Stadium, Starkville, MS

Mississippi State is a solid team. But the Bulldogs will struggle without Mike Leach roaming the sidelines. Throw out Miss State’s week 1 win against Southeast Louisiana. This is going to be much closer than the SU odds indicate.

Arizona’s offense is unstoppable. So if the defense plays okay, the AZ D doesn’t have to dominate, it just has to play okay, the Wildcats can pull off the upset victory.

College Football Week 2 SU Pick: Arizona +260 | Bet Arizona at Mississippi State

2021 NCAAF Season Week 2 SU Betting Picks to Wager On

Previous Betting News

It was a pretty good start to the season as far as our Week 1 picks went, as we nailed 3-team parlays with our SU and ATS picks. We did come up a little short with our O/U picks, but we still showed a very nice profit by hitting the other two. We did particularly well in our straight-up picks, as we had a couple of underdogs (Penn State and Georgia) come through with the win. We are going to try and carry that luck over into Week 2 and will get the ball rolling with our SU picks for the week. As usual, we will try to stick with games that are tight in the odds as opposed to simply picking overwhelming favorites. With that in mind, let’s get to our Week 2 SU picks in college football so you can get ready to make your bets against the NCAAF odds.

College Football SU Picks for Week 2

Pittsburgh Panthers over Tennessee Volunteers

It was a successful opening week for both of these teams, as they were both able to come away with convincing wins in Week 1, albeit against lesser opposition. The Panthers looked totally dominant in a 51-7 win over UMASS, while Tennessee had little problem in disposing of Bowling Green. This is a much tougher proposition for these teams, and it is the Pittsburgh Panthers who are in as a mild favorite. Pittsburgh has now won each of their last 6 games played in the month of September and are 16-4 SU in their last 20 games played in Week 2. The Tennessee Volunteers have the exact same Week 2 record in their past 20 games, but they are also just 2-7 SU in their last 9 overall. I am on Pitt in this one.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights over Syracuse Orange

These are two more teams heading into Week 2 in the heels of wins in their opening games of the season. It is the Rutgers Scarlet Knights who are in as a 2-point favorite for this one, and while we are focusing on the SU for this piece, the point spread is important in determining who we think will win in this one. Rutgers looked very good in their first game of the season, dropping 61 points on Temple. Syracuse didn’t put up such lofty numbers, but they still had a comfortable 29-9 win over Ohio in Week 1. That win for Rutgers was their first September victory in their last 8, but there are other trends that look much better here. They have won 6 of their last 8 against Syracuse and have covered the spread in each of their last 5 road games.

Iowa Hawkeyes over Iowa State Cyclones

We went with a couple of underdogs in our SU picks last week and are going to close out picks for this week by rolling with another dog. The Iowa Hawkeyes will hit the road as an underdog this week, going against the Iowa State Cyclones. Iowa looked very good in Week 1, downing Indiana 34-6 in a victory that will almost certainly move them up the National Rankings when they are released on Tuesday. The Cyclones also got a win, but they did not look great in a 16-10 win over Northern Iowa. In this matchup, it has been Iowa who has won 5 in a row over Iowa State. The Hawkeyes are now also on a run that has seen them win 7 in a row.

2019 College Football Week 2 SU Betting Picks

Previous Betting News

Week 1 of the college football season will come to a close on Monday night when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Louisville Cardinals square off in primetime. It has been a great opening week, with the favorites to win it all this season all getting through their opening games without too much trouble. That means that it’s time to start looking ahead to Week 2, as we look at some SU picks for the week.

We will also have ATS and point total picks coming your way, so be sure to watch for those. For the SU picks, we have tried to focus on games where the spread is close, meaning that the teams involved are evenly matched, as that should help deliver better college football odds.

2019 College Football Week 2 SU Betting Picks

Purdue Boilermakers over Vanderbilt Commodores

College Football Week 2 Odds: Purdue -310

It’s tough to really gauge a team when they open their season against a top 4 team, but it’s fair to say that the Vanderbilt Commodores never really threatened the Georgia Bulldogs in any meaningful way. They should have an easier time against Purdue, but it’s never easy to go on the road and secure a result against any team in the college game.

The Boilermakers will a little unlucky to lose 34-31 to Nevada in their opener on the road, but I like them to bounce back at home. Purdue are 13-6 SU in their last 19 Week 2 games, which is a very decent record.

College Football Week 2 Betting Trends

Commodores are 4-8 SU in their last 12 games
Boilermakers are 13-6 SU in their last 19 games played in week 2
Boilermakers are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games against an opponent in the Southeast conference

Syracuse Orange (-140) over Maryland Terrapins

College Football Week 2 Odds: Syracuse -140

Both the Orange and the Terrapins are coming into this one with a 1-0 record after picking up the win in Week 1. Both teams held the opposition scoreless, and while they were both going against lesser opponents, it’s still always a good sign when you keep an opponent off the board.

While you could look at Maryland as having the slight edge on home field this weekend, they are going against a Syracuse team that has won 7 of their last 8 overall, which is perhaps why they are slight favorites here. That also points us to the fact that the Orange have covered in 10 of their last 13 games on the road, which makes them a solid SU pick.

College Football Week 2 Betting Trends

Orange are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games played on a Saturday
Orange are 2-11 SU in their last 13 games against an opponent in the Big 10 conference
Terrapins are 9-2 SU in their last 11 games played in September
Terrapins are 8-1 SU in their last 9 games played in week 2

Nebraska Cornhuskers over Colorado Buffaloes

College Football Week 2 Odds: Nebraska -190

There are times when the numbers and stats can pull you in two different directions, which is very much the case when looking at this Nebraska Cornhuskers team. They have not been a good SU bet on the road of late, losing 7 in a row away from home.

While that might immediately look like a major red flag, it is worth noting that they have taken 5 of the last 7 meetings versus the Buffaloes. Colorado won their season opener, but that was their first win in 8 attempts going back to last season, all of which points to Nebraska winning a close one here.

College Football Week 2 Betting Trends

Cornhuskers are 5-2 SU in their last 7 games against Colorado
Cornhuskers are 2-5 SU in their last 7 games against an opponent in the Pacific 12 conference
Buffaloes are 1-7 SU in their last 8 games
Buffaloes are 12-3 SU in their last 15 games played in September

UCLA Bruins (-265) over San Diego State Aztecs

College Football Week 2 Odds: UCLA -265

Getting this UCLA team turned around and back on track is going to be no easy feat, with their season getting off to a rough start after a 14-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Bruins will head back home for Week 2, welcoming in an Aztecs team that is coming off a less than stellar 6-0 win in their season opener.

We may very well revisit this game in out point total picks, as this looks like a low-scoring game all the way. UCLA have won 5 of their last 6 games versus teams from the Mountain West, so let’s take them to improve on that.

NCAA Football Week 2 SU Odds & Picks

Previous Betting News

If you’re a college football betting enthusiast that is looking for some straight-up picks that look like sure-fire locks with the start of Week 2 just days away, then you should sit up right and hold on tight – or risk getting blown away by my five huge NCAA Football Week 2 SU picks!

That’s right collegiate gridiron gamers, I’m going all over the country to give you five sweet Week 2 picks that all look like literal locks.

NCAA Football Week 2 SU Odds & Picks

Let’s get started in the SEC.

What’s a guy to think when he sees a point spread like the Week 2 line that has No. 1 Alabama as a -36.5-point home favorite against Arkansas State? He’s supposed to think how much of a lock the SU outcome is, that’s what. If you’re looking for a straight-up winner, then you’ve got to know that there is no way on earth that Alabama loses at home to Arkansas State. It’s nice that Arkansas State put 48 points on the board in their Week 1 win over Southeast Mississippi, but Alabama thrashed Louisville 51-14 in their opener while getting a great glimpse. Even if they don’t cover the chalk as five touchdown-plus home favorites, there’s no way Alabama loses this contest.

No. 9 Penn State is a 7.5-point road favorite at Pittsburgh.

You might be wondering why I have Penn State as one of my Week 2 SU picks after they nearly pulled off a major choke job in their opener before narrowly squeaking past Appalachian State 45-38 in overtime. Well, it’s because the Nittany Lions have more overall roster talent and they are simply the better team in all three phases of the game. After losing at Pitt 42-39 in 2016 when this series was resumed for the first time since they last played in 2000, the Nittany Lions spanked Pitt 33-14 at home last season. I expecting the Nittany Lions to be locked in and focused after their Week 1 scare and now, Pitt is going to pay for that near lapse.

No. 6 Wisconsin is a 34.5-point home favorite against New Mexico.

I’ve got sixth-ranked Wisconsin as one of my four CFP semifinalists this year…that’s how highly I think of head coach Paul Chryst and the job he’s done at Wisconsin. The Badgers have an experienced quarterback that has improved each year, a superstar running back that finished fifth in the Heisman voting a year ago as a true freshman – and a lockdown defense that has been one of the best in the nation for the last three seasons. New Mexico beat tiny Incarnate Word 62-30 in their opener, but this is the same team that lost seven straight to close out 2017. Penn State wins!

No. 11 Notre Dame is a 34.5-point home favorite against Ball State.

11th-ranked Notre Dame looked really solid on both sides of the ball in their 24-17 week 1 win over Michigan that wasn’t as close as the score indicates. The Fighting Irish have won 10 of their last 12 games and they have the look of a legitimate playoff contender as much as any team can after one week. While Ball State took out Central Connecticut 42-6 in their opener, they don’t have nearly enough talent to take down a legitimate powerhouse. If you’re worried about the Irish covering the near, five-touchdown spread, take them as a straight up pick this week.

Last but not least, while I’m not real happy about seeing Urban Myer only get a three-game suspension, his fourth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes are a lock to beat Rutgers when they host them this weekend. While Rutgers won their opener 35-7 over Texas Southern, the Scarlet Knights lost their final three games last season and got blown off the field in their 56-0 shutout loss at home against Ohio State. There’s no substitute for sheer talent and Ohio State’s got plenty of it.

Top College Football SU Picks For Week 2

Previous Betting News

Forget about your heavily favored teams like Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson who should all be due for obvious victories in Week 2. This article is about the SU picks for those top Week 2 games that look to offer the best online college football odds values.

Here’s a Closer Look At The Top College Football SU Picks For Week 2

BYU at Utah (-3), Saturday, September 10, 7:30 PM ET

Week 2 NCAAF SU Pick: Utah

BYU Cougars is coming off a morale-boosting 18-16 win over Utah, so the team should be damn psyched for a strong show against the Utes, their second Pac-12 foe in a row. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they have a poor 0-5 SU mark in their last five straight games against the Utes dating back to 2010. In addition, the Utes looked solid enough in their 24-0 win over Southern Utah last Thursday, with freshman quarterback Troy Williams decently passing for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Putting such numbers against BYU’s defense will certainly not be easy against BYU’s veteran-laden defense. Still, with Utah’s equally stellar defense taking care of things on the other side of the ball and helping to clean up any mistakes from the young Utes offense, the betting value here should be with the Utes.

Penn State at Pittsburgh (-6), Saturday, September 10, 12:00 PM ET

Week 2 NCAAF SU Pick: Pittsburgh

Historically speaking, Penn State has dominated this series in the past, winning 3 of the last 4 overall meetings vs. Pittsburgh, including a 20-0 shutout when these two teams last met in 2000. In fact, had this game come in 2015, I’d be jumping on the Nittany Lions, as Christian Hackenberg was a talented QB and Penn State’s defense played quite well at the time. But we are in 2016 and Hackenberg is now in the NFL with the Jets, leaving an iffy situation at QB. Penn State’s 33-13 win over Ken State in Week 1 also showed vulnerabilities in both the Nitany Lions’ O and D lines. On the flipside, Pittsburgh has a solid QB in Nathan Peterman, who is supported by an efficient running game and an above-average defense. And to make matters worse, Penn State has been rather poor on the road in recent times, going 1-4 SU in its last 5 games. With that in mind, the Panthers should almost definitely offer the best value here on the SU lines. By the way, although Penn State is 3-1 in the last 4 vs. Pittsburgh, the Panthers are 4-0 ATS in those four contests, so you may want to consider the hosts for the ATS value as well.

Middle Tennessee at Vanderbilt (-5.5), Saturday, September 10, 4:00 PM ET

Week 2 NCAAF SU Pick: Middle Tennessee

Okay, this is me going out on a limb, but if you watched how Vandy and Middle Tennessee played in Week 1, you’d understand why I am siding with the Blue Raiders and not the Commodores for the win here. Vandy’s offensive struggles from last season have seemingly carried onto this season, as the Commodores totaled just 73 passing yards, 169 rushing yards and 10 measly points in a slugfest against South Carolina in Week 1. The Commodores, who closed the game against South Carolina as 5.5-point favorites, ended up losing the game 13-10. Conversely, Middle Tennessee was fluent in offense and defense, racking up 435 passing yards, 246 rushing yards in an impressive 55-0 shutout of Alabama A&M, covering a 47.5 spread in the process. Besides that impressive Week 1 showcase from the Blue Raiders, history indicates that Middle Tennessee is 3-1 SU and 3-1 ATS in its four head-to-head meetings against Vandy. Given a chance against the overrated Vandy, I surely expect Middle Tennessee to come up big. Vandy’s defense will keep them in the contest momentarily, but the Blue Raiders will settle and run away with this game, possibly even delivering a double-digit upset victory.

Top College Football SU Picks Of The Week (Sept. 24th)

Previous Betting News

That’s right college football betting lines enthusiasts, three really is a magic number thanks to the trio of expert SU picks that you’re about to get on three Week 4 college football matchups! With that said, let’s get started!

Here’s a Closer Look At The Top College Football SU Picks Of The Week (Sept. 24th)

No. 18 LSU at Auburn

When: 6:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 24, 2016
Where: Jordan Hare Stadium, Auburn, Alabama
NCAAF Odds: LSU -3.5

Analysis:
While LSU Tigers may not be a legitimate national title contender this season, but they’re still in much better shape than Auburn, which has issues all over the place, starting at quarterback. While LSU has compiled an uninspiring 2-6 ATS mark in their last eight games, Auburn is just 5-15-1 ATS in its last 21 games and an even more discouraging 2-12-1 ATS in its last 15 home games

Not only that, but LSU will have the best player on the field in the powerful Fournette and has a decisive advantage when it comes to head coaching. Auburn wins and covers.

My Pick: LSU 28 Auburn 24

No. 19 Florida at No. 14 Tennessee

When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, September 24, 2016
Where: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tennessee
NCAAF Odds: Tennessee -6.5

Analysis:
I know the Tennessee Volunteers are playing at home, but I’m going with the Florida Gators to get the outright road upset because they have something going for them the Vols do not – defense! I know Florida is just 2-5 ATS in its last seven games while Tennessee has gone 4-2 ATS in its last six games, but the Vols have escaped two really inferior programs by the skin of their collective teeth and I believe the Gators will make them pay where other teams have not.

I know the Vols have won five straight at home, but I think the buck stops here with Florida!

My Pick: Florida 21 Tennessee 17

No. 17 Arkansas at No. 10 Texas A&M

When: 9:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 24, 2016
Where: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas
NCAAF Odds: Texas A&M -6

Analysis:
For me, Texas A&M is the easy pick to win and cover the college football betting line against an Arkansas team that has beaten up on three inferior opponents coming into this contest. While Arkansas has gone 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against Texas A&M, the Aggies are 4-2 ATS in its last six games and now holds the edge in all three phases of the game.

My Pick: Texas A&M 30 Arkansas 20
