Series History

It’s the first of four regular-season meetings between the teams. Last season, the Thunder swept 3-0. You may remember Spurs legends Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili set a record for most games played by a trio in NBA history by playing their 730th career game together in Oklahoma City on 4/7/15. OKC general manager Sam Presti was a member of the Spurs front office from 2000–07, ascending to assistant general manager. The Thunder are 25-28 versus the Spurs during the Oklahoma City era. In this span, OKC is 17-11 at home vs. SAS and 8-17 on the road.

Why Bet on San Antonio?

The Spurs are on a season-high five-game losing streak as they blew a sizable lead Sunday and lost 118-113 at home to Miami. Duncan Robinson and Bam Adebayo combined for 20 points in the final quarter as Miami won its fourth straight in San Antonio. Jimmy Butler added 19 points as the Heat overcame a 19-point deficit. The Heat had runs of 17-0, 18-5 and 12-0 to rally from multiple double-digit deficits against the Spurs.

San Antonio rookie star Victor Wembanyama supplied 18 points but on just 8-for-22 shooting along with 11 rebounds, seven assists and one block in 34 minutes. The No. 1 overall pick wasn’t overly efficient and committed a season-high seven turnovers. Wembanyama settled for too many difficult shots, particularly from three-point range. He’ll eventually learn he can almost always get a quality look due to his physical attributes.

Wemby had some ups and downs, but overall he is off to a strong start, thanks in large part to his 2.4 blocks per game. Through 10 appearances, he’s shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 29.8 percent from three while knocking down 76.6 percent of his 4.7 free throw attempts per contest.

Keldon Johnson scored 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting and added 12 rebounds, six assists, a steal, a block and three triples. Johnson totaled just 15 points on 6-of-19 shooting across his last two games, so Sunday’s output was encouraging at least from a volume perspective. Johnson’s scoring and efficiency have taken a nosedive this season. His scoring had improved every season he has been in the NBA. Leonard joined Kawhi Leonard, Vinny Del Negro and George Gervin as Spurs who improved by 2.0+ PPG in each of their first four seasons with the Spurs. Johnson and Leonard are the only two to improve by 3.0+ PPG each season.

Zach Collins racked up 18 points and five rebounds in 33 minutes. Collins continues to be a fixture in the Spurs’ starting lineup, and his 33 minutes of action Sunday represented a decent uptick after he’d played 24, 24 and 20 minutes, respectively, over San Antonio’s previous three games.

With backup point guard Tre Jones out with a hamstring injury, more point guard pressure fell on Sochan. He performed reasonably well. Scoring-wise, Sochan was really good. He knocked down two three-pointers on his way to an efficient 16 points. Jones is day-to-day.

Devin Vassell is taking some tough shots but is still registering career-high marks (by wide margins) in effective field goal percentage (60.9%) and true shooting percentage (63.5%). His 16-for-29 (55%) from mid-range ranks second among 35 players with at least 25 attempts.

The Spurs rank last in opponent effective field goal percentage at 58%. They had their best game in that regard (50.6% for the Heat) on Sunday, but Miami was 28-for-30 from the free-throw line and committed just seven turnovers.

The Spurs have their youngest roster ever since Gregg Popovich became coach in 1996, with an average age of 23.5. The roster this season includes 14-of-18 players 24-years-old or younger and enters the season as the youngest team in the NBA by age. The next youngest Spurs teams: 2022-23 (23.6) and 2021-22 (25.0).

Why Bet on Oklahoma City?

The Thunder surprised the Suns in Phoenix on Sunday, 111-99. Phoenix’s shooting percentage plummeted from 51% in the first half to 38% by the end of the game at Footprint Center. The Suns shot 2-of-21 (10%) in the final period and allowed the Thunder to go 9-of-15 (60%) from the field. Phoenix additionally committed 10 fouls and turned it over four times. The turnover battle went 17-8 in favor of Oklahoma City, leading to a 13-point differential in its favor. Devin Booker (calf) remained out, and guard Eric Gordon was sidelined with a shoulder injury suffered Friday for Phoenix.

Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander contributed 35 points on 13-for-22 shooting along with seven boards and four assists for OKC. Gilgeous-Alexander has finished with at least 35 points, seven rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block in four straight games after missing a Nov. 3 contest versus Golden State to manage a knee issue. SGA is currently averaging career-high marks in rebounds (7.0), assists (6.1) and steals (2.1) per game.

Jalen Williams accumulated 31 points on 11 of 16 shooting in 38 minutes. Williams and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put the Suns away in the fourth quarter, combining to shoot 7-of-9 from the field as Oklahoma City turned a six-point deficit into a 12-point win. Not only were the 31 points a season-high for Williams, it was also his second game of the season with at least 20. In the two games prior, he scored 29 points on 11-of-24 shooting.

Rookie 7-footer Chet Holmgren registered 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks over 33 minutes. Holmgren hasn’t exploded for a monster game yet, but the rookie has been incredibly consistent. Across 10 appearances, he’s averaging 16.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.3 blocks and 0.9 steals in 30.1 minutes per game.

Oklahoma City ranks top five in the league in field goal percentage (t-3rd at 49.0), free throw percentage (1st at 85.8), and three-point percentage (4th at 37.5). No other team ranks in the top five in all three. Not bad for the second-youngest team in the NBA.

“We don’t want any excuses. That accelerates our growth as well, not wanting to be considered young,” Jaylin Williams joked after Sunday’s win. “Guys are more willing and know that they’re capable of a lot so we hold ourselves to that standard.”

Despite the victory, some of Oklahoma City’s biggest weaknesses showed up once again, including the team’s struggles on the glass. The Suns grabbed 51 rebounds while the Thunder snagged just 33, including 16 offensive rebounds for Phoenix and just six for OKC. The Thunder haven’t won the battle on the boards since the team took down the Pistons on Oct. 30, when the Thunder grabbed three more rebounds than Detroit.
